Rizal's first Teacher
Jose Rizal's first teacher was his mother, who had taught him
how to read and pray and who had encouraged him to write
poetry.
Later, private tutors taught the young Rizal Spanish and Latin,
before he was sent to a private school in Biñan.
Later, an old man named Leon Monroy, a former classmate of
Rizal's father, became the boy's tutor.
This old teacher lived at the Rizal home and instructed Jose in
Spanish and Latin.
Unfortunately, Leon, he died five months later.
After a Monroy's death, the hero's parents decided to send their
gifted son to a private school in Biñan.
4. Binan, Laguna
The next morning (Monday) Paciano brought his younger brother to the
school of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz.
The school was in the house of the teacher, which was a small nipa hut
about 30 meters from the home of Jose's aunt.
Paciano knew the teacher quite well because he had been a pupil
under him before.
On his first day of school, Jose was angry at a boy who made fun of him
in class. He challenged the bully, Pedro, to a fight, which Pedro readily
accepted. The two boys wrestled furiously in the classroom, much to the
glee of their classmates. Jose, having learned the art of wrestling from his
athletic Tio Manuel, defeated the bigger boy. For this feat, he became
popular among his classmates.
Jose outperformed all Binan lads in academics. In Spanish, Latin, and
other disciplines, he outperformed them all. His academic superiority
made several of his elder classmates envious. They screeched
incessantly to the teacher anytime Jose got into a fight outside of school,
and they even made lies to discredit him in front of the teacher. As a
result, the teacher had no choice except to reprimand Jose.
One Sunday afternoon in June , 1869, Jose, after kissing the hands of his
parents and a tearful parting from his sister, left Calamba for Biñan.
He was accompanied by Paciano , who acted as his second father.
The two brothers rode in a carromata, reaching their destination after
one and one-half hours' drive. They proceeded to their aunt's house,
where Jose was to lodge.

Ateneo Year's (1872-1877)
In June 1872, Jose was sent to Manila to study in
Ateneo
Previously called Escuela Pia or Charity School of
Manila, founded in 1817.
The Government placed it in supervision of the
Jesuits. The name of the school then became
Ateneo Municipal, and then Ateneo de Manila.
Going back to Rizal, he was known to be the most brilliant
Atenean during his time, garnering the label "the pride of the
Jesuits" and graduated with highest honors and earned the degree
of Bachelor of Arts –equivalent to high school diploma of today's
curriculum.
Rizal took private SpanishLessons at the Santa Isabel College during
noon breaks whose payment costs P3 for 3 extra hours.
He invested his literary knowledge wholeheartedly under the
teachings of his favorite Jesuit Professor, Father Sanchez, and
painting under the famous Spanish painter, Agustin Saez and
sculpture under Romualdo de Jesus, a noted Filipino sculptor.
He was a member of the Academy of Spanish Literature and
Academy of Natural Sciences among other prestigious society
groups inside the university's halls of residence.

It was during this time that Rizal was
able to write so many award winning

One of the reason why he chose medicine, was his desire to cure his mother's
growing blindness due to cataract.
After graduating with highest honor with the degree of Bachelor of Arts which
was equivalent to only high school during the Spanish time in Ateneo, Jose Rizal
decided to continue his studies in Manila.
Aside from his strong desire to finish his medical course due to his mother's
illness, there were three other reasons why Rizal decided to continue his studies
abroad:
1 .The biased and hostile of the Dominican professor against him.
2. He was disgusted with the antiquated method of instruction in the University.
3. The racial discrimination that the Dominican professor had against Filipino .
7. Shortly after finishing fourth year of his medical course, Rizal decided to continue his studies in Spain. In spite of his enormous
successes in literary field, he was no longer happy in his stay in the Dominican-owned school. He felt “he could no longer endure
rampant bigotry,” discrimination and hostility prevailing in the University of Santo Tomas.
Aside from the two prize-winning poems mentioned earlier, Rizal had produced several literary works such as poems, zarzuela, etc.
Junta al Pasig (Beside the Pasig) was a zarzuela which was staged by the Ateneans in 1880. He also wrote a sonnet entitled “A Filipina”
for the albums of the Society of Sculptors, a poem urging all Filipino artists to glorify the Philippines.

8. Academic Journey to Spain
On May 3, 1882 he boarded on Salvadora bound for Singapore where he was the only Filipino passenger.
On November 3, 1882, he enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid taking up two courses: Philosophy an Letters and Medicine.
On June 21, 1884, he conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine.
His departure for Spain was kept secret from Spanish Authorities, friars and even his parents especially his mother because she would not allow him
to go. To avoid detection, he used the name Jose Mercado.
The following academic year, he studied and passed all subjects leading to the degree of doctor of medicine. Unfortunately, he was not able to
submit the thesis required for graduation nor paid the corresponding fees. With that, he was not awarded his Doctor’s Diploma.
Rizal also finished his studies in Philosophy and Letters with higher grades. He was awarded the Degree of Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters by
the Universidad Central de Madrid June 19, 1885 with the rating of excellent.
Jose Rizal earned a Licentiate in Medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid, where he also took courses in philosophy and literature. It was in
Madrid that he began writing Noli Me Tangere. He also attended classes in the University of Paris and, in 1887, he completed his eye specialization
course at the University of Heidelberg. It was also in that year that Rizal’s first novel was published in Berlin.
