2. As expression of a young and independent approach to filmmaking, this
production represents a promising debut combining maturity and a
courageous gaze into the future.
Ring Film and Carlo Lavagna’s feature film fascinated important personal-
ities such as the cinematographer Helene Louvart and the Oscar nominat-
ed costume designer Antonella Cannarozzi.
From the cast of the Oscar winning La Grande Bellezza, the actor Massi-
mo Popolizio and the actress Galatea Ranzi will play the role of Arian-
na’s parents.
From the myth of Tyresias to the Odyssey, throughout Ovid’s Metamor-
phoses, Antigone, and Virginia Wolf’s Orlando, hermaphoditism - as
intersex was previously known - has been a forefront theme.
Jeffrey Eugenides’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Middlesex (2002) and the
movie XXY, winner of the Grand Prix Semaine de la Critique at Cannes
Film festival (2007) show how this topic is still inspiring and very perti-
nent in modern thought.
The idea of the film was conceived in 2003, at a time when Carlo Lavag-
na - the film’s director - was living in the US producing a documentary on
intersexuality.
After a period of research, collecting biographies and interviews, he
went back to Europe to start putting together a film. In Italy he met Arian-
na, the person who founded the first Italian intersex association (AISIA).
Year after year, as their acquaintance grew, the awareness that a dimen-
sion ignored by most of the people existed, became overwhelming, and
transformed itself in the need to create a story aiming to disclose as truth-
fully as possible the intersex condition.
Believing in the project and sharing a common vision, Ring Film decided
to join the project.
A script was presented to the Italian public cinema fund and won a gov-
ernment grant in 2012.
3. INTERSEX
NOUN [ MASS NOUN ]
The abnormal condition of being intermediate between male and female;
hermaphroditism.
Intersex, in humans, is a variation of sexual characteristics, including chromosomes, gonads, or genitals that doesn’t
allow an individual to be distinctly identified as male or female. Although most of the people ignore it, this condition
is more frequent than imagined: approximately a child every 3000 births. Today in the world there are almost 3
million intersex people – the same as the population of cities like Berlin, Rome, Chicago or like the state of New
Mexico. Most infants with ambiguous outer genitalia are surgically corrected to more easily fit into a socially accept-
ed sex category.

4. It is early in the morning and Arianna is bathing in the water of an ancient hot spring.
She is naked and her androgynous body emerges from that hot milky water. Arianna is
nineteen and she lives in Rome, with Marcello, her father - a tasteful liberal-minded
doctor - and Adele, her graceful mother. She studies Chinese with Martino.
She has feelings for him but is too awkward to express them. One day Arianna and her family return to their old hunting lodge in Tuscany, a house
where they lived when Arianna was a little girl. The house has been rented for fifteen years and there is a mysterious reticence in Arianna’s parents
in going back. There, during the silent, sweltering afternoons, a cumbersome shadow begins to emerge for Arianna. A host of memories from her
early childhood gradually resurface. She begins to wonder whether the scar in her groin area really is the result of hernia surgery, as she has
always been told by her parents and their family doctor.
One day, while making love to Martino, she feels a sharp pain. Though this sensation is not new to her, she immediately decides to take all her
doubts to a new gynecologist.
