Film Evaluation
Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings) we chose the title "The Unbeknown" because it sounds creepy. Emma and Becky came up with it and i just went along as I thought it sounded good. the problem was that we didn't take much time thinking about it and we didn't toy with any other ideas. We chose to use Emma's house as the setting because it is big and also it is close to school so it was easily accessible to all of the group and the actors both also lived closest to Emma so it seemed a good idea to satisfy them and it was a good decision as the setting worked well. I think that are costumes worked well as it showed that the imaginary friend was crazy and had something wrong with her. but i feel that it wasn't that realistic to real life and it kind of took the realism out of it. we used many different shots and I think they worked well as there was good continuity and the sots were steady and professional where they needed to be.one problem was that we had to go back and re film a few parts so we couldn't get the lighting exactly the same or the makeup. I think our story was good as it is represented well seen as there is know dialogue and also it is different to everyone Else's film from our year and past years. we managed to put across our genre as a horror by the music as it was dark and creepy and at times we increased the volume to put the audience on edge and also to build up tension.
Question 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups ? I think that our character the imaginary friend is a resemblance of the girl out of The Ring. we tried to get the same look by having her wearing tatty clothes and a scary face but it was hard because we didn't have the professional equipment to make them look the same. but seen as we didn't have the best props to use we made the most of it and I feel we made an effective character.
... As you can see they dot really look much alike but we tried are best with the equipment and props that were available to us. The lighting plays a big part in whether the character looks scary as well. So we found it hard to find the right contrast
Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? We have used the company Eye View which we made up. it. would probably be a niche market film as it is a complicated story line. the film idolises "The Ring" as that was a big hit film in 2002. we would like it to be a hit blockbuster but it is not professional enough to aim that high. we would be a conglomerate of universal as that is were we would get the money to fund our film and also we could get the professional help and ideas from them as we would have a lot bigger budget than being a company like “Warp Films” who are independant.
Question 4 Who would be the audience for your media product? We would have a certificate of 15 as at parts in can be scary and gruesome. Also it is a hard story line to follow so young less mature people wouldn't understand it. The people who would like this film would be film lovers and have a good understanding of complicated story lines. They would like music and be into the rock/ Indy genre as our film is pushing towards a gothic stereotype but it would be suitable for anyone.
Question 5 How did you attract/address your audience? we did a questionnaire that asked people about our film and we also got some previous feedback on how to improve it to hit the target audience of over 15, film loving students more easily I also did a mood board which highlighted the films which our film is like and espiers to. It also showed what other films the target audience would like and I think it worked well as it helped us combine different horror films into 1.
... There are some big hit films on here including saw and there are other things that are associated with our target audience like the rock band and the computer games
Question 6 What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? These are the pieces of technology we used, throughout the filming and editing process I have become more confident in using all of this technology. The problems with using these are that they are not top of the range so sometimes they fail and you are unable to complete your work. But thankfully we had no problems and we were able to finish our work on time. We used a program called i movie and garage band which were easy to use but not as professional as other programs like Sony Vegas which was unavailable to us as a group. Apple Mac Fire wire Tripod Video Camera
Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product? We used a few of the shots that we were told to do in our prelim in our actual film opening like the 180% rule and match on action. I found the prelim task was a big help as it showed us what camera angles were effective and what weren't . Also it showed me that we would have to work really hard to finish the project as the prelim was only 30 seconds and the real thing would be 2 minutes so I think it showed me how to prepare for the actual real thing so that I wouldn't go into it with a laid back response but with the knowledge of how to use each piece of technology effectively.
