Cloud computing revolutionized application design, and changed the way people think about infrastructure. The rise of cloud computing coincided with a new generation of applications and services that required scale. New architecture and design had to take into account low latency network connectivity, geographic distribution, large real-time data stores, the ability to meet demand (while not knowing exactly how much demand to handle), and so much more. We refer to this as Internet Scale. Yet most discussion of scale and cloud revolves around compute as virtualized instances, which have defined configurations and constrained options. Delivering on the promise of Internet Scale involves substantial upfront design, and a comprehensive understanding of the entire architecture - from the underlying hardware, to the operating system, the application stack, services, and deployment. And, it involves choice - choices you should make based on your requirements. Join us for a discussion on the many facets of Internet Scale, and how it can apply to your applications and services.

M2M/IoT is rapidly growing and since its early days different “standard” protocols have emerged (e.g. OMA-DM, TR-069, MQTT, …) or are emerging (e.g. CoAP or Lightweight M2M). Understanding which protocol to use for which application can be intimidating, therefore we propose to give an overview of these protocols to help you understand their goals and characteristics. We’ll present common M2M use cases and why they usually require more than just one protocol ; we will also see whether CoAP associated with Lightweight M2M allows to forge “one protocol to rule them all”.

True microservices are more than simply bolting a REST interface on your legacy application, packing it in a Docker container and hoping for the best. Security is a key component when designing and building out any new architecture, and it must be considered from top to bottom. Umpa Lumpas might not be considered "real" microservices, but Willy Wonka still has them locked down tight! In this talk, Aaron will briefly touch on the idea and security benefits of microservices before diving into practical and real world examples of creating a secure microservices architecture. We'll start with designing and building high security Docker containers, using and examining the latest security features in Docker (such as User Namespaces and seccomp-bpf) as well as examine some typically forgotten security principals. Aaron will end on exploring related challenges and solutions in the areas of network security, secrets management and application hardening. Finally, while this talk is geared towards Microservices, it should prove informational for all Docker users, building a PaaS or otherwise.

Presentation of ActiveStates micro-cloud solution Stackato at Open Source Days 2012. Stackato is a cloud solution from renowned ActiveState. It is based on the Open Source CloudFoundry and offers a serious cloud solution for Perl programmers, but also supports Python, Ruby, Node.js, PHP, Clojure and Java. Stackato is very strong in the private PaaS area, but do also support as public PaaS and deployment onto Amazon's EC2. The presentation will cover basic use of Stackato and the reason for using a PaaS, public as private. Stackato can also be used as a micro-cloud for developers supporting vSphere, VMware Fusion, Parallels and VirtualBox. Stackato is currently in public beta, but it is already quite impressive in both features and tools. Stackato is not Open Source, but CloudFoundry is and Stackato offers a magnificent platform for deployment of Open Source projects, sites and services. ActiveState has committed to keeping the micro-cloud solution free so it offers an exciting capability and extension to the developers toolbox and toolchain.
