13. Wat is design thinking?
13
?
14. Wat is design thinking?
14
“Design thinking is the search for a magical balance
between business and art; structure and chaos;
intuition and logic; concept and execution; playfulness
and formality; and control and empowerment”
DESIGN THINKING
“Designers describe their
discipline as one of
solving problems and
view design as a critical
process to go through in
order to make sense of
complexity and help
humanize technology
(….). Recently, this process
had been called design
thinking”
- Idris Motee, CMO CEO Idea Couture “Design thinking can be
described as a discipline that uses
the designer’s sensibility and
methods to match people’s needs
with what is technologically
feasible and what a viable
business strategy can convert
into customer value and market
opportunity.”- Tim Brown, CEO IDEO
- Jon Kolko, VP Design, Blackboard
15. Dus… wat is design thinking?
15
DESIGN THINKING
16. Kernconcepten van design thinking: Constraints
16
DESIGN THINKING
User
Desirability
Technical
Feasability
Business
Viability
Innovatie
Begrenzingen niet apart oplossen (designer)
Maar in balans brengen (design thinking)
Nintendo Wii
“The mark of a designer is a willing embrace of constraints” – Charles Eames
17. Kernconcepten van design thinking:
Empathy
17
DESIGN THINKING
“You can’t hide behind an online survey and expect to gain empathy with people. You
need to spend time with them, laught with them, experience their highs and lows, and
get to know them” – Jon Kolko
Insight
Focus juist op het opmerkelijke, het niet-
passende, de ‘outliers’
Observation
Kijk naar wat mensen doen (natuurlijk
gedrag) in een bepaalde situatie of
context – niet naar wat ze zeggen dat
ze doen
Empathy
Plaats je daadwerkelijk in schoenen van
de ander, liefst zo praktisch mogelijk
18. Kernconcepten van design thinking: Prototyping
18
DESIGN THINKING
“Goal of prototyping is not to create a working model, but to give form to an idea to
learn about its strengths and weaknesses and identify new direction for the next
generation prototype” – Tim Brown
A successful prototype is not one that works flawlessly; it is one that teaches us something – about
our objectives, our process, and ourselves. Slow down to speed up

22. Achtergrond van Lean Startup
22
LEAN STARTUP
Customer Development
“More startups fail from a lack of
customers than from a failure of
product management”
Lean Manufacturing
“Making obvious what adds value
by reducing everything else.
Eliminate waste”
23. Wat is Lean Startup?
23
“The Lean Startup provides a scientific approach to
creating and managing startups and get a desired
product to customers' hands faster.”
LEAN STARTUP
“It is a principled
approach to new product
development”
- Eric Ries, author The Lean Startup
“The Lean Startup method
teaches you how to drive a
startup-how to steer, when to
turn, and when to persevere-and
grow a business with maximum
acceleration”
- Wired
- Marc Andreessen, co-founder
Andreessen Horowitz
“The perfect philosophy
for an era of limited
resources”
“Eric Ries has created a science where
previously there was only art”
24. Dus… wat is Lean Startup?
24
LEAN STARTUP
verzamelen obv opgestelde hypotheses
“A startup is a human institution designed to
create a new product or service under
conditions of extreme uncertainty”
26. Kernconcepten van Lean Startup:
Minimum Viable Product
26
LEAN STARTUP
Based on growth engine:
Paid (CPA-LTV)
Sticky (New Buss% – Churn%)
Viral (new customers / customer)
Total revenue
Total traffic
etc
“the smallest amount of work necessary to start that
process of learning whether your idea is liked or not.”

Food on the Table: concierge MVP Aardvark: wizard of Oz MVP
27. Kernconcepten van Lean Startup:
Innovation accounting

Tune the engine
Pivot or persevere

30. Overeenkomsten
30
DESIGN THINKING VS. LEAN STARTUP
