Nowadays, Data Science is buzzing all over the place. But what is a, so-called, Data Scientist? Some will argue that a Data Scientist is a person able to report and present insights in a data set. Others will say that a Data Scientist can handle a high throughput of values and expose them in services. Yet another definition includes the capacity to create meaningful visualizations on the data. However, we enter an age where velocity is a key. Not only the velocity of your data is high, but the time to market is shortened. Hence, the time separating the moment you receive a set of data and the time you’ll be able to deliver added value is crucial. In this talk, we’ll review the legacy Data Science methodologies, what it meant in terms of delivered work and results. Afterwards, we’ll slightly move towards different concepts, techniques and tools that Data Scientists will have to learn and appropriate in order to accomplish their tasks in the age of Big Data. The dissertation is closed by exposing the Data Fellas view on a solution to the challenges, specially thanks to the Spark Notebook and the Shar3 product we develop.

A presentation from Museums and the Web 2009. There has been an encouraging surge of interest in the museums sector in opening up museum data and building APIs on museum collections databases. However, a museum's collections are not the only and sometimes not even the most interesting service which a museum provides. Events, communities, shopping, learning and interpretation are all areas where museums have lively and engaging offerings. These areas typically have a Web presence, and therefore the possibility exists to build an API or make use of an existing API to open up that offering. Furthermore, as museum collections’ content becomes more readily accessible on the Web, museums need to focus more and more on their value-add, the expertise and authority which they bring to the interpretation of their own collections and those of others. Rhaptos is the Plone-based open source software that powers the popular educational materials portal CNX.org which receives 1-1.6 million visitors every month from all over the world. As a very popular resource for so many people, it's imperative that the site is architected for high availability. With data centers in Houston near hurricane territory, it was critical to have a backup plan for where to host the site in the event that the data center was destroyed. This talk is a case study for how Rice University together with external consultants came up with a virtualization of the Rhaptos platform, to be able to quickly launch new instances on Amazon EC2. The deployment was completely automated for both multi-server production environments as well as one-off demo and testing instances. We'll show you how this was done and the tools and methods we used to make a rock solid solution.

Deep Learning has shown a tremendous success, yet it often requires a lot of effort to leverage its power. Existing Deep Learning frameworks require writing a lot of code to work with a model, let alone in a distributed manner. This webinar is the first of a series in which we survey the state of Deep Learning at scale, and where we introduce the Deep Learning Pipelines, a new open-source package for Apache Spark. This package simplifies Deep Learning in three major ways: 1. It has a simple API that integrates well with enterprise Machine Learning pipelines. 2. It automatically scales out common Deep Learning patterns, thanks to Spark. 3. It enables exposing Deep Learning models through the familiar Spark APIs, such as MLlib and Spark SQL. In this webinar, we will look at a complex problem of image classification, using Deep Learning and Spark. Using Deep Learning Pipelines, we will show: * how to build deep learning models in a few lines of code; * how to scale common tasks like transfer learning and prediction; and * how to publish models in Spark SQL.
