HM FORCES – Royal Navy
ASW Helicopter Aircrewman 2010 – 2016
My previous role was to operate as a helicopter Aircrewman on a Merlin Mk 2. The primary roles of the aircraft are Anti-Submarine Warfare and
Anti-Surface Warfare. My primary tasks during these roles were operating the highly sensitive airborne camera, underwater acoustic, electronic
surveillance, and utilizing the radar and navigation equipment to analyze information and provide a strategic picture to the aircraft commander. As
such I have an excellent ability to communicate and pass detailed information with persons of higher rank. The aircraft’s secondary roles include
Search and Rescue, MedEvac, load lifting, passenger and cargo transport. During personnel transfer movements; I am responsible for passenger
safety briefing and coordination. It has been in this role that I have gained the most experience recently, whilst deployed to Sierra Leone as part of
Operation Gritrock in support of British forces assisting with the Ebola outbreak there. The passengers I have been transporting in general have
little or no experience in working with aircraft, so correctly giving them safety briefings and ensuring their understanding of aircraft entry and exit
procedures has been essential. This movement of personnel also involves the movement of luggage and stores, often including dangerous goods,
fragile items, or urgent medical supplies that require specific care and attention to be paid to ensure their safe delivery. In addition to transporting
cargo internally, often I have been called upon to carry underslung loads beneath the helicopter. During ground operations I am the Subject
matter expert for the whole of the Merlin force when it comes to Sonar Risk Assessment. This is used to determine the risk of using the aircrafts
Sonar without damaging marine mammals within the vicinity of the Sonar. I have also acted as the squadron’s health and safety representative at
monthly and annual safety meetings.
Key Duties
Sonar and Radar Specialist.
Passenger Briefing and flying.
Sonar Risk Assessment.
Squadron Health and Safety representative.

Maritime Helicopter operations including HIFR and Deck Landings.

HM FORCES – Royal Navy
HMS Daring 2007-2010
HMS Campbeltown 2006-2007
HMS Cumberland 2005-2006
Leading Warfare Specialist (Underwater)
Responsible to the ship’s command for the effective and efficient conduct of the ship’s Operations team at sea. The team, which consisted of up
to 20 operators of similar and lower ranks, was tasked to provide a detailed picture of the surrounding area by combining information from
several sensors. Dealing with highly sensitive information has made me well versed in data protection and the ability to disseminate relevant and
pertinent information to the command. During OP TELIC deployments in 2005 and 2007 I was a key member of the ship for assisti ng in
coordinating multi-national assets in the boarding and clearing of merchant vessels before proceeding to the Iraqi oil platforms. This task was vital
to the coalition’s efforts to stabilise Iraq. Much of this role involved daily public briefings to key personnel. Throughout my time on HMS Daring, I
was mentor for 117 junior rates, people of equal and lower ranks to me, many of whom who had never been deployed on operations before. As
well as day-to-day leadership and management of these personnel, I dealt with career management for a majority of them, helping with any HR
issues and writing appraisal reports. During my time on DARING, I also helped to bring the ship from being a civilian vessel to a fully-fledged war
fighting ship also involved taking charge of the building we worked in till the ship was ready for personnel to embark on her. I was responsible for
ensuring all the fire and safety equipment were maintained and checked and the upkeep of fire logs, risk assessments and COSHH sheets.
Ensuring that all equipment was used correctly within this building. This has increased my knowledge and understanding of working with outside
agencies and working with people who needed to understand the needs of the Royal Navy and how they could interact and incorpo rate their
equipment into the ships design. Another role on DARING involved me acting in a Public Relations role for the ship, going round local schools
and colleges briefing the teachers and pupils on the process of how a modern ship is designed and built and what this meant t o local companies
as well as the Armed forces. These extra roles give me the skill to be able to adapt and give any presentations and briefs required of me for any
audience. I became confident in speaking to large groups of people and gained the ability to deliver information at the corre ct level dependent on
the audience.
Key Duties
Mess president of 117 personnel.
Equality and Diversity Advisor.
Operations Room Supervisor.
Subject matter expert on the Royal Navy’s newest Sonar system.
Ships Liaison with outside agencies (charity, schools and)
Accountable for COSHH

HMS Cumberland
Warfare Specialist (Underwater) 2001-2005
As part of a small but highly skilled warfare team within the Ships Operations room, where all the radar, sonar and ship’s sensors’ information is
collected and categorized, my responsibility was to pass all the relevant information to the command team enabling them to ascertain a detailed
view of the current situation and future issues. They then used this intelligence to analyze incoming air raids, submerged and surface attacks from

hostile units, dangers to the ship’s navigation and prevent collision with merchant shipping. In addition to this my primary role was to control and
maintain the sophisticated Sonar and Radar equipment, scrutinize all the information, then provide strategic material to the command, which
included detailed presentations and briefs given to upper management and other senior members of the ship ’s command team. Coupled with
these duties I was part of the ship’s fire fighting team, dealing with all ship emergencies, first aid and force protection organisation when the ship
was at sea and alongside from suspect or hostile parties trying to gain access. I was also a working member of part of ship, where I was tasked to
preserve and maintain the superstructure of the ship as well as assisting in bringing the ship into port and anchor in all weather conditions. All
these task developed my ability to work as part of a team, the confidence to brief key personnel and large groups, the ability to take valid
information, process it and pass the required material on to the correct people. I became able to take in advice quickly and improve my
understanding of the jobs I was given and because of this, prioritize the work to make myself more efficient to my managers.
