Psychology of Play
DESIGN
Public Art Installation
2
–Miguel Sicart
“Lets look in a different direction, away from
the action of play as framed by a thing or a
system that can be won. I propose an aesthetic
of play as action or, better put, the aesthetics of
play as the action of appropriation & expression
of & within context.”
3
Art Installation
• Public Space
• Social & Political Message
• The installation will be displayed in 3 connecting
rooms, one above the other.
4
–Miguel Sicart
“At the risk of being pedantic, I foolishly
propose an alternative. Let us not talk about
“game designers.” Let us bury that terminology
if what we are doing is not “games.” If we are
doing something else, if our purpose & our
activity & our focus are to make people play,
then let’s become architects and play.”
5
Room 1
• 1st room will consist of a large base
of a tree, exposing its roots, and
part of its stump.
• The roots will be transparent, with
polluted running water through
them into the stump of the tree.
6
–Miguel Sicart
“Like architects, we create just contexts, & also
like architects, we are slave to the ways others
appropriate what we carefully create. We give a
space for people to explore & express themselves
& the right props to do so.”
7
Room 2
• Room 2 will display mainly the base
of the tree, but will slightly expose
from the ceiling, the trees branches.
• The branches will continue through
the ceiling of room 2, but will grow
in the 3rd room from the floor up as
digital media, buildings, political
influence, propaganda, pollution,
etc…
8
–Miguel Sicart
“We, the architects of play, make people play.”
9
Room 3
• The 3rd & final room will
consist of social & political
message.
• Displaying digital & social
media, buildings, political
influence, propaganda,
pollution, etc…
10
–Miguel Sicart
“Game design is dead. Long live the
architecture of play.”
