Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Key points When it comes to the use of cloud services, business today is actually outpacing IT. Business users have been quick to recognize the cloud’s advantages in speeding innovation, accelerating business processes, and reducing time to revenue. They’re clamoring for greater cloud access, and in some cases even bypassing IT and signing up for public cloud services like those from Amazon and Microsoft. But enterprises and service providers have been slower to adopt cloud solutions because of well-founded concerns about security, management, and efficiency. They’re uneasy about trying to manage private and public clouds with traditional in-house IT environments. They worry about application robustness, security, and agility. They agonize over the potential for fragmentation and inefficiency stemming from piecemeal and ad hoc adoption of cloud “puzzle pieces.” And in particular, they lament the lack of a comprehensive, integrated cloud solution. Yet even while CIOs need to ensure security and maintain SLA’s, they face mounting pressure to accelerate service delivery, enhance business agility, and improve financial flexibility. They’re also eager to shift the budget away from capital expense and toward operating expense. They know cloud solutions can help them accomplish these goals, to be sure. But it will have to be the right cloud solution. June 15, 2011 HP Confidential
  2. Legacy data center have become silos – costly, complex, lots of choreography (OpEx), too many people involved The processes to get things done are cumbersome and time consuming, unsustainable: IT is at a breaking point The example above shows how complicated it can be to deliver an application infrastructure. It requires many processes and teams coordinating to order the system, locate equipment, secure approvals, set up the servers, storage, networking, load and patch the OS, virtualization and application software, and bring it all online. Many of you have probably experienced this. When the business requests a new application from IT, can take weeks or months until the application is up and running. We set out years ago to solve this problem, automate the steps, accelerate service delivery and improve service quality.
  3. Here’s an example of converged infrastructure in action. HP CloudSystem Matrix brings together server blades, storage blades, virtualized networking, and software for management, automation, and disaster recovery—all in a single, integrated infrastructure platform. HP CloudSystem Matrix moves you beyond fragmented components to a converged infrastructure platform that doubles administrator productivity, with payback in less than a year. It allows you to provision and modify a complex infrastructure in minutes instead of months. Because it’s built on the industry’s leading blade architecture with proven technologies, you know it’s reliable. CloudSystem Matrix integrates with existing third-party storage and network environments. It lets you stand up a complete infrastructure environment ready for applications in minutes, not months. This quick time-to-value is made possible with capabilities for automated provisioning of servers with storage and network connections. With built-in HP Insight software, you can provision a complex multi-tier application infrastructure in less than two hours. The platform builds on proven HP innovations. A few examples: Accelerate your business: HP Insight Software can deliver faster time to business value by reducing administration costs by 29 percent and decreasing downtime by up to 77 percent. ID-VSE can reduce the cost of common data center tasks by up to 40 percent. It provides disaster recovery with the “push of a button.” Site “role-reversal” allows for a remote site to become the primary site, and allows the ability to set up failover scenarios back to the original site when availability exists again. Greatly improve service levels: CloudSystem Matrix improves your ability to easily maintain service levels with built-in disaster recovery. With a simple mouse click, you can move workloads to other servers or sites, improving recovery time by 80 percent or more. You can fail over workloads in as few as five minutes across physical and virtual servers. Transform data center economics: CloudSystem Matrix transforms the economics of your data center, helping you double administrator productivity, and double the capacity of your data center without adding power infrastructure. It helps you increase asset utilization and reduce capital expenses. 4:1 network consolidation reduces network edge switching costs by up to 75 percent. This is accomplished with HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 technology built into BladeSystem Matrix. And it reduces cabling by up to 94 percent. This is a system integrated by design to enable shared services and work in tandem with your other data center resources. CloudSystem Matrix changes the ground rules for what it costs to host and deliver an application. For example, in Matrix test and development environments: Easily repurpose test and dev infrastructure to test multiple services and then quickly provision identical infrastructure in production use tested templates … and be able to bring production environments back into a test environment. Engineers don’t have to wait for equipment, increasing developer efficiency by up to 40 percent. Matrix increases utilization of test and dev equipment by up to 10x … and will free up IT teams that are consumed with constantly setting up systems. June 15, 2011 HP Confidential
  4. Executive notes: I mentioned that BladeSystem Matrix is the most obvious and easiest onramp to Private Cloud in the industry but what did I mean by this. Well much of what you need to implement a Private Cloud comes ‘right out the box’ with Matrix. In the future we see this extended to public cloud, as well. This includes A Self Service Portal A Service Catalog of infrastructure deployment best practices that is partner and customer extensible The resource pool itself with compute, storage, networking resources Automated infrastructure provisioning that delivers the service in minute not months. And Capacity planning and management tools to keep the resources and services healthy and optimized. With this you can see we have provided the bulk of what is needed for a Private Cloud. A BladeSystem Matrix customer need only to use the Matrix Cloud APIs to integrate approval flows, billing/chargeback, etc in thus implementing their own private cloud Key points: Matrix includes a Self-service Portal, from where users can pick from a service catalog a service (note: the service catalog can be easily created within Matrix), Resource pools are checked and allocated, and the service gets delivered. Once the service is up running Matrix will optimize the environment and perform capacity planning and other management tasks as needed. The request can be delivered in minutes!!! Matrix includes a cloud API (as of version 6.0), which allows a lot of additional integration capabilities customers want to do on the path to a private cloud. That combined with workflow customization via the embedded Orchestration Operations allows customization of additional process, e.g. the approval process or post provisioning processes. Sound bites: Matrix is the foundation of your Private Cloud solution.
  5. Message 1 : Instantly adjust to dynamic business demands. Provision and modify complex infrastructure in minutes, not months. Provision infrastructure in minutes: The HP CloudSystem Matrix lets you stand up a complete infrastructure environment ready for your applications in minutes by automating the provisioning of servers with their storage and networking connections. A complex application infrastructure can be up and running in 108 minutes (1) rather than days or months. That is the amount of time required for one administrator to automatically provision infrastructure for an e-shopping application. With traditional infrastructure this took 33 days. Optimize infrastructure confidently: Matrix provides deep insight into your infrastructure and lets you quickly adjust your environment over its lifecycle so you can predictably make changes without time-consuming analysis. Key data points like power draw, CPU, and network utilization are captured every 5 minutes (more than a thousand data points per server per day) and are used to generate best-fit consolidation scenarios. When combined with built-in rebalancing tools, this can eliminate weeks or months of tedious planning and implementation (3). Protect continuity of services : Protect and automatically recover workloads in minutes not days , with built-in cost-effective disaster recovery. Matrix lets you move workloads to other servers or sites with a simple mouse click, improving recovery time by 80 percent or more (4). Fail over workloads in as few as 5 minutes (5) across physical and virtual servers. Source: Based on experiences of HP customers and HP engineering. 108 minutes: To get here takes significant upfront configuration and design to enable this series of streamlined steps (e.g. create application templates). Defining initial/best-practice template (including template/workflows/RDP jobs and VM templates, etc.) took a couple of weeks. These templates are then used repeatedly for automated provisioning. Since we plan to make much of this available to future customers as value add, it will likely take less time for them to adapt to their environment. Source: Product Specifications Source: Result of product specifications HP product marketing, based on customer survey HP Engineering testing More details for use where required: 108 minutes is from logging into Matrix self-service portal to up and running service with configured applications. Initiate (5 minutes): Log into portal, select template and verify details, request, fill out request details (e-mail, which pools, lease period, etc.) and submit. Approval (5 minutes): Create ticket in HP Service Manager, review ticket details, and approve in HP Service Manager which automatically allows provisioning process to continue. Obviously approval times can vary. Provision Infrastructure (38 min): Automatically provision 3 blades, 3 virtual machines, automated attach of storage with NPIV, and allocate network addresses; no additional administrator interaction required; no LAN or SAN team interaction required. Install application (60 min): Install and configure Oracle RAC and WebLogic applications using custom scripted workflows (previously developed by this customer) [NDA: Planning on making this standardized out of the box.] Upfront work to install and configure Matrix not included. The typical process for the customer was 33 days because of the number of people/teams involved, communication errors/missed handoffs, and configuration errors that cause delays. 7. Key points: With Matrix we deliver “One touch infrastructure to application provisioning” by integrating HP Server Automation from HP Software’s BTO portfolio (Business Technology Optimization) As you can see in the screenshot you can specify in the Matrix screen that you would like to provision a specific application – in this case Oracle WebLogic Server through SA. To configure that you needn’t to leave the Matrix user interface: The template designer, self service portal and automated provisioning are all possible for both infrastructure and applications from the same user interface. Server Automation provides in addition to application provisioning, lifecycle management and audit/compliance management Sound bites: Bottom line: Integration of Insight Dynamics and Server Automation enables customers to provision applications in the same way that they provision infrastructure. The result: Infrastructure and application up and running in minutes Additional information: Q: Didn’t you already announce Server Automation integration with Insight Dynamics 6.0? What has changed? Integration of Server Automation with Insight Dynamics 6.0 was limited to HP ProLiant blades with Virtual Connect and/or VM hosts with VMware ESX. Insight Dynamics 6.1 extends support to all HP ProLiant servers supported by Insight Dynamics, adds Hyper-V support and expands capabilities with VMware to include linked clones. Q: How does BladeSystem Matrix & Insight Dynamics integration with Server Automation relate to the recent announcement about Cloud Service Automation? HPs’ Cloud Service Automation is a new solution brand from HP Software & Solutions, designed to provide specific set of products/services to help enterprise customers implement the management and automation required for a private cloud environment. Server Automation is an integral part of this solution. Through integration with Server Automation, BladeSystem Matrix and Insight Dynamics are integrated with Cloud Service Automation. 8. [Emphasize the economic benefits beyond consolidation/virtualization by doubling administrator productivity, energy savings and improved asset utilization through converged infrastructure that can be optimized for peak efficiency.] Message 2 : Transform the economics of your data center – double administrator productivity(6) with payback in less than a year   Double productivity of administrators, reducing your operating expenses Server management and administration personnel costs can represent over 80% of the costs of a typical IT organization today(7). With Matrix, your staff can configure and manage up to a thousand servers as a single domain(8) reducing the staff time required for routine tasks. With Virtual Connect technology, only from HP, provision server network and storage connections upfront for your entire environment to eliminate add/move/change requests. By eliminating manual coordination between server, storage, and network administrators for everyday tasks, couples with automation of many manual-intensive tasks your administrators save time and you save money. (ESS Message: Productivity)   Double the capacity of your datacenter without adding power infrastructure(9) Thermal Logic technology in Matrix lets you reclaim trapped capacity by dynamically ‘capping’ power, so data center power and cooling are not over provisioned, reducing blades power and cooling infrastructure requirements by up to 50% , without impacting performance. Matrix also lets you assess energy costs of different consolidation scenarios in minutes, helping you achieve even greater power efficiencies. (ESS Message: energy)   Increase asset utilization, reducing your capital expenses 4:1 network consolidation reduces network edge switching costs up to 75% using the HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 technology built into HP CloudSystem Matrix, and reduces cabling by up to 94%(10). Optimize server utilization and recapture unused resources using the integrated capacity planning and lifecycle management to avoid over- and under - provisioning. 9. Comparing rack to blades Savings come from the following areas: Capital Costs are reduced primarily due to the sharing of power, LAN, and SAN infrastructure at the BladeSystem enclosure level rather than for every individual rack server. This results in a drastic reduction in Power Distribution Units, power cables, LAN and SAN switches, connectors, adapters, and cables. Installation/Deployment Labor Costs: One area that contributes heavily to the installation labor savings is the drastic reduction in LAN, SAN, & power cables that need to be dealt with for blade servers. Virtual Connect: Capital Costs savings come from the cost delta between Virtual Connect + Flex 10 and the cost of traditional LAN & SAN infrastructure required to achieve a comparable level of connectivity and bandwidth. Power and Cooling Consumption cost savings come from the delta between energy required to power Virtual Connect + Flex 10 and the energy required to power the traditional LAN & SAN infrastructure at a comparable level of connectivity and bandwidth. Matrix: Capital Costs: With CloudSystem Matrix, fewer blade servers are required to run the same total application workload. This is due to the ability to share a pool of infrastructure resources (Reuse/Repurpose) across multiple applications and work teams. Matrix Insight Dynamics Infrastructure Orchestration enables pre-designed, pre-approved physical & virtual server configurations to be quickly provisioned for specific lease periods, and then returned to the resource pool when no longer needed. This allows Test & Development teams to share resources for short term projects. Infrastructure can also be provisioned to accommodate temporary application peaks and returned to the resource pool when demand decreases. HP CloudSystem Matrix further reduces the number of servers necessary through Continuous Consolidation (described earlier in this report). Power & Cooling Costs are reduced due to the reduction of necessary infrastructure.
  10. Message 3: Integrated by design. Built on the industry’s leading blade architecture. Highly flexible, scalable architecture for shared services built on proven technologies: Matrix is built on the modular HP BladeSystem platform and its core technologies including Virtual Connect, Thermal Logic, and Insight Software. 22. Major focuses for 2011 include Private Cloud enhancements and expansion of the overall Matrix eco-system. Specifically: Definitions of the two levels of storage support for Matrix: “ Matrix Supported” - For FC and iSCSI SAN storage (iSCSI limited to VM data stores only), Matrix supports solutions that have been tested with the Matrix-required version of Virtual connect, supports boot from SAN, and has the ability to present storage to non-visible WWNs (port names, not node names). This testing is typically done by the storage vendor itself. This is described in detail in the Insight Software Support Matrix and the Matrix Compatibility chart. “ Matrix Certified” – For select HP FC and iSCSI SAN storage solutions, additional testing is performed such that a “Matrix certified” label can be provided to that storage solution. This classification indicates that the HP storage has had more rigorous testing by HP within a Matrix environment, and in some cases Matrix takes advantage of a unique feature within the storage array environment. Version 6.3 – mid 1H CY 2011 Increased scalability for infrastructure orchestration in federated CMS mode (multiple CMS’ working together) – the target scalability is about 6000 for this timeframe. Introduction of added capabilities to increase multi-tenancy and chargeback capabilities. Included with this release timeframe are support for user groups and location code, allowing for better segmentation control of multiple “tenants” within a cloud environment. Extended platform support by picking up support for recently released HW environments as well as partner SW updates. Could be enabled after the 6.3 release ships – depending on the timing. HP-UX infrastructure integration support for multi-initiator NPIV (FlexFabric) and FCoE environments Expanded storage support: 3PAR F/T series Matrix certified support in 6.3 or possibly prior (Matrix supported certification in Feb ‘11 timeframe) HP P4800 SAN G2 iSCSI solution (VM data store only) for Matrix certified in 6.3 (potentially earlier), Matrix supported certification prior to 6.3 EVA 6300/6500 for Matrix certified – likely post 6.3 via update release (Matrix supported classification prior to 6.3) Storage Provisioning Manager support (better storage pool mgmt – SPM V1 capabilities) 3PAR F/T series planned for 6.3 EVA 6300/6500 likely post 6.3 via update release
  23. Scalability for BladeSystem Matrix can be categorized into two categories. The first category is a single CMS, where all of the Matrix Operating Environment management software functions and can manage up to 1500 managed nodes at the currently supported levels. For infrastructure orchestration, the ability to manage and provision node counts significantly greater than the current 1500 limit relies upon a “Federated CMS” model. This model is made up of a “Primary CMS”, which is the master management server for the core environment. Additional “Secondary CMS” management servers can be driven by the Primary CMS to allow for additional provisioning of physical and virtual workloads. The rollout of the increased maximum scalability via the Federated CMS model for Infrastructure Orchestration provisioning is as follows: Via BladeSystem Matrix at the end of 2010 , provisioning for up to 4000 VM’s for IO as a TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW (non-production environments) Via BladeSystem Matrix at the end of 1H 2011, provisioning for up to 6000 VM’s for IO in a production environment Single CMS server scalability figures will also be increased during this timeframe, contributing to the increased Federated scalability numbers as outlined above. 25. BladeSystem Matrix environments support several multi-tenancy features today, some of which are enabled by HP SW offerings that are supported in a BladeSystem Matrix solution area. Specifically, the multi-tenancy features within Matrix today include: Physical and virtual server pools can be managed in a multi-tenant environment, as dictated by the server admin Individual user requests via the self-service portal within Matrix can be separated with multi-tenancy in mind Beyond individual users and virtual/physical server pools, many multi-tenancy controls are available today for a Matrix environment in the following areas: Support for User Groups supported today by using the HP Aggregation Portal from HP SW, which allows service providers to create and manage user groups, as well as the ability to customize the user group environment based on specific needs of the individual client. Support for network VLAN separation in a VM environment, is enabled by workflows via Operations Orchestration, as well as via the Network Automation utility for network configuration and management. This allows for the separation of VLANs between tenants within a service provider environment, allowing secure network access within that tenancy. Support for storage tenant support through both inherent capabilities with Matrix Storage Provisioning Manager, as well as via separate capabilities offered by Storage Essentials. The storage essentials specifics are listed at the bottom of this notes section. For 2011, Matrix will be providing support for the following multi-tenancy capabilities within the Matrix offering itself (not requiring the currently-available HP SW items as listed above): In 1H 2011 the ability to have User Group support, with delegated admin support introduced in 2H 2011 In 2H 2011 the ability to have VLAN separation enabled and supported within the infrastructure orchestration capability In 2H 2011 the extension of storage provisioning manager support via on-demand storage provisioning and “auto carving” within a multi-tenancy environment --------------------------- General Storage Essentials (including 3PAR capabilities) Storage Essentials today manages heterogeneous storage and already has capabilities available for 3Par. There are 3 primary use cases for Storage Essentials – asset discovery & topology, capacity optimization and performance management. Today SE can already perform the first two use cases for 3Par storage. Performance management is targeted for 1H 2011. In addition automatic storage tier identification and chargeback will be available for 3PAR as a patch for the current Storage Essentials 6.3 release. Multi-tenancy and Storage Essentials   Storage Essentials can help service providers today to support multiple customers using shared pools of storage (aka multi-tenancy). SE provides a Storage chargeback module for the service provider environment to automatically identify tiered storage and simplify the billing process for customers. Advanced reporting module allows providers to monitor capacity usage and trending of shared pools of storage. The benefit to the service provider is they assure customers that they are getting secure access to storage and they can offer differentiated storage offerings to customers. 26. With Utility Ready Computing, we allow customers to have up to 20% spare capacity onsite and pay for it only when it gets used. And the way we determine they are using that capacity is simply if the blade is on or off.   The combination with Matrix is powerful because in our story we talk about physical and virtual servers and yet…who wants to have extra full servers sitting around doing nothing? With URC, you can have the server there, but only pay for it when it is turned on.   Matrix will identify that a server is in a resource pool as long as it is licensed in a chassis. Then when a server resource is required, Matrix will reach out to the blade, power it on and provision it. When the service/server is deactivated, the server is by default powered off.   The customer then only pays for that capacity when they are using it. This saves the customer money on the actual infrastructure while making sure they have all the physical resources they need. June 15, 2011 HP Confidential
  27. Insight Dynamics protects continuity of services by providing, enabling, or enhancing a wide spectrum of availability and recovery solutions. For both ProLiant and Integrity platforms, the continuum of solutions range from server-aware and application-aware availability, to disaster recovery solutions for distances from campus to continental, supporting both physical and virtual server environments. Integrated support for physical and virtual logical servers on Integrity and ProLiant – Through enabling technologies like HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager, Insight Dynamics’ integrated set of infrastructure management tools allow for the seamless movement of physical and virtual environments within an enclosure, between enclosures, or between virtual server environments. Additionally, Insight Dynamics’ tools are utilized by more general purpose availability and recovery products on both Integrity and ProLiant, to insure that every availability requirement your business needs are provided. Intuitive visual movement of profiles for server availability – Through graphically-enabled management tools , planned availability and recovery scenarios can be quickly activated whenever the need arises. In parallel, the highly sophisticated availability and recovery solutions for more mission critical environments, such as Serviceguard on Integrity, can utilize many of the environments which are associated which are graphically managed as above. Server-aware recovery in minutes rather than hours or days – Whether you're running Integrity or ProLiant environments, “server-aware” recovery is provided to move your essential business environments without the requirement of having application awareness. These availability and recovery scenarios can be enabled with server profile recovery on ProLiant with a product such as Insight Dynamics recovery management . On both platforms, server profiles can be moved by virtual machine from one VM to another, enabled by the availability features of the virtualization solution (for ProLiant, through enablement of VMware availability envrionments, and on Integrity through Integrity Virtual Machines online guest movement . In all cases, the availability and recovery is provided within minutes, rather than the hours (or even days) that manual processes can take. Application-aware availability and recovery measured in seconds rather than minutes – For those environments where business-critical and mission-critical availability and recovery are required, Insight Dynamics integrates with “application-aware” solutions to provide a faster and more granular level of solution recovery. These solutions typically have more awareness of the state of an application, as well as system status, and can provide availability and recovery scenarios where the application can be brought up within seconds, rather than hours. For Integrity servers, the Serviceguard family of products provides the level of mission critical availability that customers require in these environments. Wide range of HA/DR solutions from HP as well as from key partners – Whether the solution is provided by HP, or through key virtualization or availability partners, Insight Dynamics’ integration is key to a more seamless level of availability. Regardless of the platform – Integrity or ProLiant – you’ll find that the spectrum of available solutions is unparalleled in the industry.

  30. At the heart of Insight Recovery is the continuous access synchronous replication of the storage assigned to the logical servers, in other words an exact mirror of the primary site is maintained on the storage at the Recovery site. The actual failover process is a matter of invoking a activate the Logical Server on Recovery Site hardware which in turn boots the image associated to the recovery site logical server . This process is initiated from the Recovery Site CMS Insight Recovery GUI by changing the role In the diagram, there are two logical servers running at the Primary Site, a “red” and a “blue” logical server. As part of the configuration of Insight Recovery, a user can choose to protect a specified set of logical servers running at the Primary Site. In this example, the user has chosen to protect both the red and blue logical servers in the event of a disaster at the Primary Site using Insight Recovery. These logical servers are said to be “DR-PROTECTED” (Disaster Recovery – Protected) logical servers. Similarly, as part of the Insight Recovery configuration at the Recovery Site, two logical server profiles that were created and associated with the red and blue logical servers at the Primary Site, which are created but not activated at the Recovery Site. These are said to be “DR-PROTECTED/DR-DISABLED” logical servers at the Recovery Site. The DR-DISABLED flag indicates that these logical servers cannot be activated by the user through ID-VSE, and can only be activated as the result of performing a failover command in Insight Recovery, or by placing them into “Maintenance Mode” to enable them to be activated at the Recovery Site for testing purposes. The failover command will activate all “DR-PROTECTED/DR-DISABLED” logical servers at the Recovery Site, thereby converting them to “DR-PROTECTED”. As a side-effect of performing the failover command, the Recovery Site changes roles and becomes the new Primary Site.
  31. This graphic shows the typical primary and recovery site configurations within a Matrix and/or Insight Dynamics environment. The specific use case here shows a physical blade on the primary site, represented through a logical server that will be utilized in the case of a disaster (planned or unplanned). By utilizing the “portable image” capability of Matrix 6.2, the physical blade workload can be recovered to EITHER another physical blade, or to an VMware ESX guest environment at the recovery site. Here, the use case is to consolidate physical workloads to a Vmhost, allowing for cost savings from multiple physical hosts to a single VM host with multiple guests. The added value (and what’s unique to HP), is that the same workload can also be recovered to a physical blade should the primary destination of a VMware VM host not be available. Customers can save with the physical to virtual recovery by consolidating from many to one physical environments, and due to the automated flexibility of recovering the same workload to either a virtual or physical environment, improve the likelihood of a complete DR recovery should the recovery site have unexpected resource issues.
  32. June 15, 2011 HP Confidential You can also optimize resources by choosing the type of HP-UX Mission-critical virtualization that most appropriately matches your workload requirements. If electrical and security isolation is critical for you to separate specific workloads on a Superdome or high mid-range server, HP nPartitions addresses your needs. HP-UX Virtual Partitions enable you to carve up your nPartitions into software partitions with greater, core-level granularity, for additional flexibility. Integrity Virtual Machines provide hypervisor-based virtualization with shared resourcing. Integrity Virtual Machines provides automatic, dynamic, resource allocation, based on demand and entitlement. HP-UX Containers (aka HP-UX Secure Resource Partitions ) provide shared OS virtualization with dynamic, shared resource optimization. HP-UX Containers provide a lightweight workload deployment environment that enables you to consolidate multiple workloads within a single instance of the HP-UX 11i operating system. Depending on your specific workload requirements, you can balance between isolation and flexibility by using the right mix of HP-UX virtualization techniques. These virtualization techniques can be used in conjunction with each other. They also integrate with HP’s Serviceguard high availability solution, iCAP instant capacity, and the various system and infrastructure management tools HP-UX and the Matrix OE provide.

If you look in the diagram, you see the Integrity VM Host, which manages the physical hardware and virtualizes those resources to the virtual machines guests above it. It shares processors and I/O, the dynamic resource allocation is built in (through pre-configured priorities and minimum and maximum resources) There can be (like for IBM) up to 20 VMs per processor core Integrity VM runs on ANY HP Integrity: server, nPartition or blade Since only the VM Host is put into Integrity security ring 0, the VMs have both OS fault and security isolation Integrity VM is designed for off-the-shelf multi-OS guests. We now support: HP-UX 11i v2 & v3, Windows Server 2003, and Red Hat Linux RHEL 4 update 4, and plan to provide SUSE Linux by end of 2007, and OpenVMS in the future However, something critical to remember is that virtual machines is a critical integrated component of the HP VSE, integrating with management, HA and instant capacity Virtualization Licensing is our policy for licensing HP-UX software in virtualized environments. You can either: run as many instances of software as you want in different virtual machines throughout the server or nPartition (i.e., license throughout the nPartition or server), or run software in as few instances as you need on just a portion of the server (i.e., purchase licenses for just the number of cores that the software is configured to run on). 37. Global Workload Manager is a multi-system WLM solution to manage large, multi-system environments. Customers are very excited about this products – they like in particular the easy of use aspects of this product. HP gWLM is targeted at centralized IT consolidation opportunities. Very often, a central IT department will not know the exact service level requirements for Line of Business application instances, or the relative priority of each application to the company. Central IT requires standard policies that work with their standard configurations. gWLM offers simple, easy to use, powerful workload management policies. These policies can be deployed to many applications or partitions, and managed, monitored, and configured from a central location. The pre-enabled reports include reports that show which application instances borrow excessive resources, show that an application instance got its guaranteed resources whenever it required them, and can suggest a recommended partition size for an application based on historical data. Background information: gWLM operates much like HP-UX WLM does – it allows you to monitor the workloads in different partitions, and set policies to “flex” the partitions based on who’s busy, who’s idle, according to the rules you set that govern the sharing of resources. The first release of gWLM will do this for HP-UX vPars, HP-UX Processor sets. To support this type of environment, gWLM is designed with features that will make it easy to centrally manage a large number of systems and partitions. In order to accomplish this, gWLM will have a Central Management Station (CMS). The CMS is integrated with the HP Systems Insight Manager. The CMS consists of a web-based UI, and a a repository for storing the configuration, as well as performance data. From the CMS, the user will be able to centrally manage the servers, partitions, and workloads that gWLM manages. You’ll be able to apply policies to workloads, that govern when and how resources are shared. Also, you’ll be able to get reports, both real-time and historical, on how the resources were allocated, how much each workload used, and how much each workload needed. gWLM also operates in advisory mode in addition to the automated mode. In advisory mode, rather than automatically moving CPU resources, it will generate an ITO event to recommend a CPU migration. gWLM will be able to discover the hosts in the datacenter, much like HP Software’s IT Operations or the HP-UX Systems Insight Manager does. Additionally, gWLM will discover the partitions (nPars, vPars, psets, FSS groups) on partitioned systems, making it easy for the operator to apply policies to begin managing them. One of the design goals for gWLM is this: If you’re already using vPars, you’ll be able to understand, install, and configure gWLM to manage those vPars in less than 30 minutes. Since many of our customers are already implementing these utilities using HP Partitioning products, we want to make it really easy and quick to start getting value from gWLM – by having it monitor and flex those partitions. Another way that gWLM will provide quick time-to-value is by providing out-of-the-box support for the most commonly used policies and configurations. Many of our customers tell us that they’ve got a small corps of highly skilled Sys Admins, and another group of less experienced staff. gWLM will allow the Senior SA’s to define a few standard policies, and then delegate to the less experienced staff the job of applying them, as new workloads are brought into the environment. Finally, when implementing a compute utility on partitioned servers, our users have told us that they want to allow the Senior SA’s to define a few simple policies, and have those policies apply to lots of workloads in their datacenter. (Think ITO templates – you define the policy once, and then apply it to lots of workloads). gWLM will have pre-enabled standard reports. These reports will include reports that show that an application got the guaranteed resources when it needed them (and at times, additional resources). For the Central IT role, there will be reports that show the correct size of a partition based on historical utilization, reports that show which applications are consistently borrowing resources, actual historical utilization over a period. In addition to the many reports, HP gWLM will have a real time monitoring facility. This will allow customers to view actual resources, requested resources, actual utilization, target utilization, minimum size, and maximum size. gWLM will have an advisory mode that, instead of automatically moving resources, will send an alert to HP IT Operations instead. Positioning with WLM: Both HP-UX WLM and HP gWLM provide a mechanism for moving resources between application instances or partitions based on policies. HP-UX WLM is a great product for a line of business consolidation opportunity. Lines of Business usually know the relative priority of applications and their impact on the business. The configuration can be customized for each individual application and for individual application performance objectives. While gWLM is targeted at centralized IT for large environments and easy-to-use policies. Global Workload Manager 2.0 for HP-UX 11i Support for HP Integrity Virtual Machines Support for policy-based workload management of HP Integrity Virtual Machines Hierarchical partitions gWLM supports the simultaneous active management of nPars with Instant Capacity, vPars or HP Integrity Virtual Machines, and sub-CPU Fair Share Scheduler groups on the same physical server Support for Temporary Instant Capacity Activate and deactivate CPUs based on policies and real-time demand Synchronize workload management policies in a Serviceguard cluster Ensure that a workload management policy remains consistent across multiple nodes in a Serviceguard cluster. 41. Common storage catalog for both server & storage administrators – one pool, one portal, one set of access controls Our next release of Matrix further simplifies storage deployment and administration by creating a common storage catalog through integration with HP StorageWorks Storage Provisioning Manager. We do that in an evolutionary way without breaking existing processes – very much comparable what we have done with Virtual Connect in the networking space. A catalog of storage is populated by the storage administrator and used to select storage for the roll out of a service.  The default storage for Matrix is HP Storage and the first products supported are HP EVA and XP storage which provide advanced high availability features for storage including multi-site failover.   In the future HP will extend Storage Provisioning Manager to more of the HP storage portfolio. This will enable advanced storage services such as Automated Tiering for cost effective placement and access to data, Modular scaling of the storage environment with scale-out storage services, Scalable File Storage to Multiple Petabytes  and HP StoreOnce Data Deduplication to be a feature of  HP BladeSystem Matrix.  Because of the open architecture of HP BladeSystem Matrix almost any Storage products can be integrated with  BladeSystem Matrix but more manual steps are required and the level of integration of storage services provided will be diminished. Additional Details Storage Provisioning Manager provides a service orientation to storage management. It performs automated provisioning of HP storage products within the Insight Dynamics and Matrix environments.  Storage resources can be populated into a storage catalog, categorized according to intended use, and then provisioned by matching storage needs to the available resources.  Storage admins no longer have to manually respond to users’ requests. They now manage the policies and allow automation to act. Matrix v6.2 introduces a common storage provisioning interface for both the server and storage administrators. It provides a consistent view of storage pools, making it easier for server admin to request storage and populate storage pools, while allowing the storage admin to retain control of process and permissions. Server admins have increased visibility to changes initiated by storage admin. (Side note: in the last release of Matrix we added storage tagging capabilities – the ability to define within Matrix for a specific workload which storage tier it should use. You can save up to 50% through storage tiering.)
  42. Key points: In addition to “storage tagging” for physical workloads we offer now also VM storage tagging. That gives administrators and architects control to which data stores VMs get provisioned. They can specify a specific data store, or just a tag that identifies storage characteristics (tier 1, tier 2, gold, silver, HA, iSCSI, etc). The benefit is that many customer do have multiple types and tiers of storage connected to their VM hosts, so if a service being provisioned requires certain storage for performance or resiliency or whatever, we can now make sure the VMs go to the right place instead of just going to any available data store. As we support now as well for Matrix iSCSI data stores for VMs the savings can be significantly. The result: you can automatically lower your storage costs – up to 50% through storage tiering (just in CAPEX the savings can be 48% alone). Additional information: Storage tiering information For Storage tier 3: HP StorageWorks P4500 G2 120TB MDL SAS Scalable Capacity SAN Solution = $1,058 / TB – for tier 3 For Storage tier 2: HP EVA 4400 – 10 TB 34000$ – basic config, i.e. with some more management $4K (including business copy) For Storage tier 1: HP XP Support for file-based VMs with hypervisor file systems using iSCSI or NFS in the Matrix 6.0 U1 and 6.1 releases does not include the Insight Dynamics disaster recovery capabilities. Support for file-based VMs with hypervisor file systems using iSCSI or NFS in the Matrix 6.0 U1 and 6.1 releases does not include support for Raw Device Mapping (RDM) for the VM to directly access the iSCSI LUN. Support for iSCSI or NFS in the Matrix 6.0 U1 and 6.1 releases does not include support for physical server boot. Boot from iSCSI support is planned for a later release. Host servers should be configured for local booting or boot from FC SAN.
  43. This slide introduces the concept of the storage catalog. Rather than having to manually share storage request information and enter response information (in the Insight Dynamics logical server storage pool entries), the storage administrator can use a storage catalog. Storage pool entry requests can be fulfilled automatically (w/o storage admin involvement), or can be fulfilled as they are received (if couldn’t anticipate the need, or didn’t want to automate). Can note that these may be separate roles, or in some environments (perhaps for some types of storage), one individual may play both roles. Pre-populating the catalog works when customer finds LUN masking to be sufficient (no zoning), or is using WWN-based zoning with a known set of initiator and controller WWNs. The initiator WWNs may have been configured into VCEM, or may be known from previous interactions with logical servers. This enables requests to be fulfilled without any manual interaction (the request is matched to appropriate catalog entries which have already been provisioned). If desired, the customer can also choose to provision in response to individual storage requests (displayed as unfulfilled in the Storage Provisioning Manager, enabling the storage admin to see the storage request specifies, provision appropriate storage and create one or more catalog entries which can be used to fulfill the request). Presentation Title
  44. Support for file-based virtual machines on a hypervisor using iSCSI for the file system is available in Matrix 6.0 U1 and Matrix 6.1.  Matrix 6.0 U1 iSCSI support encompasses VMware ESX hypervisors using HP StorageWorks P4300 and P4500 G2 iSCSI storage.  Matrix 6.1 adds support for Hyper-V hypervisors and MSA2000i iSCSI storage.  NetApp iSCSI will also be supported.  Note that Hyper-V supported data stores must be mapped to drive letters. Virtual Machines with their backing store in the file system of a hypervisor are manageable as logical servers, or as services through the Insight Dynamics infrastructure orchestration portal.   The fact that the hypervisor file system can now be on iSCSI storage does not change the logical server or infrastructure orchestration management capabilities. Support for VMs with iSCSI in the Matrix 6.0 U1 and 6.1 releases does not include  either Insight Dynamics disaster recovery capabilities, or support for Raw Device Mapping (RDM) for the VM to directly access the iSCSI LUN.  Support for iSCSI in the Matrix 6.0 U1 and 6.1 releases does not include support for physical server boot from iSCSI SAN.  This support is planned for a later release. Host servers should be configured for local booting or boot from FC SAN.

  48. The question remains … HOW can customers begin to implement a Next Generation Data Center? How can customers ‘see’ the benefits that CI can deliver in a tangible fashion? We recognize that each customer is unique. CI-MM is about the ‘how to’ migrate from the current state of IT to a converged infrastructure. It is about building a holistic roadmap in a consultative fashion. Many leading analysts agree that the next-generation data center is about improving IT across three characteristics — operational efficiency, quality of service, and speed of implementing IT projects. A successful plan toward a converged infrastructure – or data center of the future - requires both a tactical and a strategic dimension. Tactically, you need to break down the IT silos by standardizing, modularizing, and virtualizing your IT environment while automating error-prone manual processes, and simplifying and tightening management control. Strategically, you need to change how IT interacts with your business — bringing together people, process, and technology. At HP, we understand how tactical and strategic dimensions relate to and depend on each other. We also know that you have very specific needs and objectives. We bring these considerations together with our HP Converged Infrastructure Maturity Model (CI-MM). HP CI-MM uses a pragmatic and structured approach, based on business and IT objectives and quantitative metrics. It provides a high-level, customized roadmap of suggested next-steps and recommended projects to meet your overall business and IT priorities. This roadmap helps you drive toward your next-generation data center. Converged Infrastructure Maturity Model Move forward in a more predictable manner The HP Converged Infrastructure Maturity Model provides a holistic approach for assessing the current state of your data center and helps define an action-oriented, step-by-step, high-level roadmap for reaching your desired future state. The HP CI-MM uses a broad set of real-world metrics, based on research and industry best practices that align business metrics for IT: Operational efficiency, quality of service, and IT agility. Potential benefits Determine opportunities to decrease your IT operating costs while increasing overall data center efficiency Review how your IT infrastructure compares to others by industry, company size or region across various areas¹ Averages and ‘best in class’ (top percentile) comparisons Discuss how you can better manage risk and improve the quality of services provided to the business Expand your existing capabilities and increase IT agility to better align business and IT objectives Identify and prioritize the types of projects with the greatest impact for your organization and build an actionable plan toward a NGDC -------- CI-MM and CI-MM Express (the latter developed specifically for our top channel partners) is about the ‘how to’ migrate from the current state of IT to a next generation data center. It is about building a holistic roadmap in a consultative fashion. Every customer will take a different evolution path towards an converged infrastructure based on their existing environment and their business priorities. To help them define and manage their evolution, we have developed a tool called the Converged Infrastructure Maturity Model, or CI-MM. CI-MM delivers a pragmatic, action-oriented set of high-level customer-specific recommendations and a step-by-step roadmap based on HP best practices along with our portfolio of HP and partner solutions. CI-MM Express is a more focused version of CI-MM and targets two domain areas. It is designed to enable companies to more quickly assess where their data centers and IT infrastructure are today, and, based on a preliminary gap analysis frame an initial number of actions that are required to address major gaps in the IT infrastructure space. CI-MM Express was developed for the channel and it is available only to a select tier of channel partners.
  49. Each Matrix Starter Kit includes Matrix Implementation Services. These Implementation Services begin with the racking, cabling, and configuration of the systems in the Factory. All of this information is then passed to the Technology Services team in the field, which completes the installation, startup, and orientation at the customer’s site. Once the Implementation Service is completed, the customer has a fully functional Matrix solution. Also included in the Matrix Starter Kit are hardware repair services, and software support services for all of the included hardware and software components. These services can be augmented by uplifts to a higher level-of-service such as Committed Call-to-Repair services or Mission Critical support services; also available are optional Care Packs of services to continue support beyond the warranty period. Of course, Matrix customers may choose from the entire portfolio of Bladesystem and Virtualization services available from Technology Services. This portfolio includes extensive ‘up front’ assessment and advisory services ranging from Data Center Design through Power and Cooling, through Data Center Operations assistance. Virtualization consulting and implementation services are available from our Solutions Implementation Practice. Support for products added to a Matrix solution is available as well – including installation and startup services, and support services. HP Education Services offers best-in-class training on each of the key HP technologies which encompass our Blade Matrix solution. This includes training on c-Class blades, Enterprise Virtual Array storage products, as well as our Insight Control, Virtual Connect, and Insight Dynamics-VSE software products. We also partner with VMware and Microsoft to offer training on their hypervisors and applications as well. HP education services leverages HP’s ownership of these proprietary technologies and our partnerships with VMware and Microsoft to offer instruction and course materials from the very experts that create, manage, and enhance these technologies. These training offerings are available worldwide in a variety of training formats, including traditional classroom, dedicated on-sites, and on-line."
  50. (1) c7000 enclosure – provides the basic blade infrastructure (we are using a standard available c7000 enclosure, fully loaded with all power supplies, fans and a redundant Onboard Administrator) (2) Virtual Connect Ethernet and FC modules – a redundant pair of each of these are included in the solution; these are required to provide virtualized and manageable virtualized connectivity, for more rapid provisioning of servers including their connection to the data center fabrics. Also, these are required for us to move physical server blade identities around simply by moving their logical server/connection profiles – this provides flexibility for failover and recovery scenarios, test/dev to production, dynamic resources additions, reprovisioning, and more. (3) Insight Software management software licenses – this list of software consists of our entire ProLiant-based management software capabilities – (we are currently considering adding Insight Recovery as well although it’s not listed here yet). This includes: Insight Orchestration, Insight Dynamics – VSE (which in turn includes Insight Control and Server Migration Pack – Universal Edition), and Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager. We would include 16-server licenses in this package, to ensure the ability to license an entire enclosure full of our half-height blades. The management software provides the central console for designing/architecting application infrastructures (via templates), provisioning or reprovisioning those infrastructure resources, monitoring/advising on resource utilization, and performing any number of basic and advanced operational use cases such as X2Y consolidation, automated node failover, site recovery, and much more, all from one powerful interface. (4) Implementation service – this is a mandatory “soup to nuts setup” service that comes with the Starter Kit to set up the entire environment at the customer’s site. This is a packaged service that is flexible to the customer’s needs and provides some knowledge transfer to the customer. It includes the setup of the key blade components, Virtual Connect, storage connectivity, and setup and configuration of the management server, as well as provisioning of up to 4 (2 physical and 2 virtual) logical servers. (5) Server blades, operating systems, hypervisors – customers are encouraged to purchase their blades, including with custom or standard OS/application images (with Factory Express capabilities). Our compatibility list for the Matrix solution includes almost all shipping ProLiant and Integrity blades. (6) Central management server – this is a server that a customer needs to have available or purchase with their order to serve as the server host for their management software. This can be any rackable server (blade or rackmount ProLiant) that meets the minimum system requirements for the central management server. (7) EVA 4400 – the Matrix product team has customized the configuration and setup of the EVA 4400 for customers wanting to purchase a turnkey SAN array, ready to go with their solution and ready for booting from SAN. We actually will support any BladeSystem-certified SAN array target in a customer’s environment that has been properly configured for booting from SAN and has properly presented and zoned LUNs (i.e. StorageWorks XP, EVA, MSA, or from any of the primary 3rd party SAN vendors such as EMC, Hitachi, and IBM).
