Is a proactive conscious approach to networking/connecting dots a way to be more, or achieve faster, better and cheaper results?
Gee do I need to do this every day?
A rising tide raises all boats
Help out when you can
Thank You – staff, mentors, customers and vendors
Ask for advice - good things can happen and it is flattering
Networking without EFFORT is only a regret
Networking poorly is a waste of time
Not everyone you “connect” with is a relationship
Be willing to say NO and deal with your time wasters
LinkedIn
Facebook
Twitter
Google+
Blogging
To name a few
You build up a trust bank that keeps value long after you lose touch
Start from a point of “trust”
Call – they will be glad you did
Offer to stop by when you are in their area
Weak or dormant contacts may provide insight that is not top of mind to you
People that matter
People you want to work with or support
Organizations or events that you care about
Be willing to experiment
Always be connecting people
Quality not quantity
Focus on other person - pay attention, learn something
Do not be afraid to excuse yourself
No selling
Think across your entire LifeNet
If you are going to Listen you better practice asking questions
Research person beforehand
Think about what you want to accomplish
Ask how you can help or offer to help if they need it
Again, do not interrupt
Pay attention to body cues (non-verbal)
Respect person’s time
Be curious
Who do you look to for motivation
What do you do outside of work
Who is your competition, what are they doing today
Where do you want to be in 3, 5, 10 years
How did you accomplish “X”
What is your best networking story
Tell me about your children
What 1 or 2 things could I do to improve
What could I do to help you accomplish “X”
Would you be open to providing some career advice
Print out and carry around your contact list (yes old technology )
Review in airports, doctor offices, anywhere
Call or email as appropriate to stay in touch
