Patients can now Securely Message Providers

Marshall, Mo. – Fitzgibbon Hospital and
affiliated clinics now provide a revolutionary
new way for patients to see their health
record and interact with their providers
by implementing a full-featured, electronic
Patient Portal. The “MyHealth” Patient Portal
provides access to individual Electronic
Health Records (EHR) via any web-enabled
computer and allows patients to securely
transmit medical records to other providers
or specialists. It is designed to put patients
at the center of their care.
One of the primary features of
the portal is a secure messag-
ing feature that allows patients
to send private and secure
messages to their doctor to
request appointments, pre-
scription refills and ask ques-
tions about their care. This fea-
ture was recently enabled for
all providers at Marshall Family
Practice, Marshall Women’s
Care and Brian Brizendine,
M.D., surgeon.
“Fitzgibbon Hospital and clinics, including
Marshall Orthopedics and Sports Medicine,
Marshall Family Practice, Marshall Surgical,
Marshall Women’s Care, Akeman-McBurney
Medical Clinic, Grand River Medical Clinic
and Fitzgibbon Family Health have imple-
mented the patient portal. This is an excit-
ing, free tool that empowers patients to take
charge of their own health,” said Tom Jones,
chief information officer for Fitzgibbon
Hospital.
Provisions of the Affordable Care Act require
the portal to be functional for physician prac-
tices. Fitzgibbon has invested more than
$200,000 in software upgrades, training
and infrastructure to bring this feature to
its patients and their families. The portal is
just one part of a multi-year movement all
health providers are making - from paper
records to a computer-based, electronic
health record.
“The MyHealth Patient Portal
is just one of the many provi-
sions required of all health care
providers under the Affordable
Care Act. There is definitely
value in moving to a robust
electronic health record which
can be accessed by patients,
but it is not without signifi-
cant cost,” said Darin Haug,
D.O., president and CEO of
Fitzgibbon Hospital.
“With so many parts of our
society – from shopping to listening to
music – moving to a web-based format,
it is time that our patients have access to
their records in the same way. This is an
exciting move for this industry. Because of
the amount of time and investment we have
made, it is our sincere hope that patients
will see the value of the portal and really
embrace its use,” said Haug.

From the CEO
The summer has gone
by quickly, and we have
seen several advances at
Fitzgibbon Hospital over
the last three months. The
26th Annual Pete H. Rea
Memorial Golf Tournament
was very successful thanks
to our corporate and com-
munity supporters and vol-
unteers. We also saw a
wonderful example of com-
munity organizations com-
ing together for the good
of our citizens with the first
ever partnership of Day in
the Park. The feedback
from our community has
been tremendous.
It is a sincere pleasure
to welcome back long-
time Marshall native, Dr.
Kylie Heying, to Fitzgibbon
Hospital and begin her chi-
ropractic practice inside the
Fitzgibbon Medical Clinic.
She brings excellent train-
ing and a compassion-
ate spirit for her patients.
Growing up in Marshall,
she is well known by many
in our community, and she
is really looking forward to
starting her practice. By
adding chiropractic ser-
vices at Fitzgibbon, with
someone of such quality
as Dr. Heying, we are con-
tinuing our focus on quality
compassionate care of the
whole person. She will
begin seeing patients in
September.

Personalized, on-line educational resources
are a feature of the MyHealth Patient Portal.
The MyHealth Patient
Portal is free of
charge to all users
and is available 24
hours a day, seven
days a week from any
computer connected
to the internet.
“The MyHealth Patient
Portal not only allows
access to a patient’s electronic health record
through an easy-to-use website, but it also
allows the patient to provide access to other
users, for example, a caregiver, for specific
results for a set period of time while protecting
the rest of their EHR. A patient may want a
caregiver, friend, loved one or another provider
to have access to certain blood test results for
only 24 hours, but they want to protect access
to other areas of their record. The portal has
functionality to allow patients to set this up
themselves,” said Haug.
According to Jones, the MyHealth Patient Portal
is fully encrypted, using the same security pro-
tocols currently used by banking institutions
across the country. A study released in January
2014 by Pew Research found that 81 percent
of American households use online banking to
manage their finances, and 90 percent have
checked their account balances using their
smart phone.
The MyHealth Patient Portal has a large range
of functionality including the ability for patients
to see lab results within 36 hours of a stay at
Fitzgibbon hospital, clinic visit or visit to the ER,
see imaging results, view notes by their doctor
within four days of an
appointment to one of
our clinics, securely
send messages to the
hospital and clinics,
request appointments,
request prescription
renewals, identify phy-
sicians who provided
care while in the hospi-
tal, and read discharge
planning instructions from their doctors.
Patients also can share appointment schedules
with loved ones or employers. Among the fea-
tures of the portal is the ability to download and
save an individual health record for use in an
emergency or while traveling. Filling out pre-vis-
it paperwork will also eventually be a function of
the MyHealth Patient Portal.
In order to view the MyHealth Patient Portal,
patients must have an individual email address,
to which a secure code will be sent to allow
access to their records. To gain access, simply
call or visit the Medical Records Department at
Fitzgibbon Hospital. Their number is (660)831-
3733.
“This really is a revolutionary tool for patients
to see the results of their doctor’s visit,” said
Haug. “It is all designed for patients to have
more control of their own health. This makes it
much easier for patients to stay engaged in their
overall health by receiving fast access to their
own health records and test results.”
Volunteer
Opportunities
Fitzgibbon Hospital
is seeking volunteers
with a green thumb to
care for plants through-
out the hospital. The
Environmental Services
Department has a cart to
transport the water barrel
so heavy lifting/carrying is
not required. This would
also be an opportunity to
visit with patients and the
Fitzgibbon Hospital staff
as you make your rounds.
If this opportunity is right
for you, please contact
Donna Smith at 660-229-
7749.
The Living Center is
seeking volunteers in the
following areas:
• plant care
• light office work in the
business office
• computer work in the
business office
• offer snacks and pass
ice, punch, and water
from the hydration cart
Please contact Theresia
Metz at 660-886-9676
extension 2800 if you
can provide assistance.
Foundation Update
It’s AMAZING what your
donation can do!
Over the past three months
there have been many
opportunities to interact with
Fitzgibbon Hospital staff and
supporters. We were very
busy during May and June
preparing for the golf tourna-
ment. Once again, sponsors,
donors, players, and volun-
teers made the tournament a
tremendous success.
New this year was the Day in
the Park event held July 30th.
It was fulfilling and reward-
ing to collaborate with Jeff
Stubblefield, Lori Godsey, the
Marshall Parks & Rec staff,
and Marshall Democrat-News
editor Sarah Reed to create
a day filled with affordable
family fun.
The Foundation Advisory
Council quarterly meeting
was held in May. Volunteer
members of the Council share
their time and talents to help
us advance the hospital’s
mission. They are a tremen-
dous resource and their ideas
always generate lively discus-
sion.
Members of the hospital lead-
ership team provided a recap
of FY2016 and a preview of
the year ahead at the annual
Employee Forums held in late
June and early July.

awareness of Fitzgibbon
Hospital news by liking our

Secure Messaging, continued
Your donations to the Helping Hands program provide much needed assistance to members of our
community who are faced with difficult choices. As Dr. Haug mentioned at The Fling in March, there
are many people in the communities we serve who are facing difficult decisions that are the result of
circumstances rather than poor choices.
The Helping Hands program has provided $2,651.38 for prescriptions, medical equipment, transpor-
tation, and fuel assistance to 82 individuals since January 1, 2016 for an average of $32 per person.
It doesn’t take a lot of money to make a difference in the life of a friend in need. We received a thank
you note recently from a patient that said in part,
“I’m sorry this thank you card is late as your help for getting me some of my medicines sure
wasn’t. My nurse had this set up for me. God Bless you.”
It is truly amazing what your donations are doing!
Helping Hands
From the CEO, continued
Chief Nursing Officer, Angela Igo R.N., and Alyssa
Ferri, C.N.S., have worked hard to build our new
Transitional Care Management program, which
will bridge the gap in care from the time a per-
son is discharged from the hospital until the time
they are able to visit their primary care physi-
cian. Initially, our program will focus on patients
who are considered at high risk for readmission.
Alyssa will meet with patients while in the hospital
and in their homes. She will be able to assess
and assist in managing medications, identify the
need for any additional tests, communicate with
the patient’s primary care physician and explore
potential issues that might hinder a person’s
expected recovery. Patient education will remain
a central focus throughout the time of care.
Jennifer Dickinson, Doctor of Physical Therapy
in our Rehabilitation Department, received addi-
tional training to assist women with incontinence
and pelvic pain issues. Many of these patients
suffer in silence, believing these conditions are
just a part of normal aging, when it is, in fact, not
the case. Jennifer has been receiving referrals
from providers both within and outside of our area
as she is the only one providing this in our area.
It can significantly improve the quality of life for
many women in our community.
As always, your support is vital in helping us with
our continued efforts to provide quality, compas-
sionate care. Thank you for all you do in advo-
cating for Fitzgibbon Hospital and our mission to
improve the health of our community.

Ginger McGraw and Donna Smith are pre-
paring for the Great Purse Reveal in the Gift
Shop. The event will begin on Friday, Septem-
ber 9th and will continue through the following
week. Make a note on your calendar so you
won’t miss the debut that will showcase new
fall lines of scarves, jewelry, gifts, and holiday
décor.
The Great Purse
Reveal The Foundation has received a donation from
a Friend of Fitzgibbon designated for recog-
nition of our nursing staff. We are creating
a ‘T’ Cart that will be stocked with “Treats for
Terrific Teamwork”. The ‘T’ Cart will be deliv-
ered to a nursing team who has exemplified
outstanding teamwork. We know our nursing
staff works diligently to provide exceptional
patient care. Thank you to the Friend of Fitz-
gibbon who has enabled us to provide this
recognition. Nursing teams who receive a
visit from the ‘T’ Cart will be recognized in the
hospital’s monthly internal newsletter.

guests could purchase kettle corn, fried Snickers, The Brick
BBQ, and Yumeez Homemade Ice Cream.
Non-profit organizations set up informational booths and passed
out free water. Visitors waited patiently in line for face painting
and for the opportunity to dunk several of the candidates whose
names appeared on the August 2nd primary ballot.
The Marshall Democrat-News car show was a popular stop
with more than 40 cars coming and going throughout the day.
Dave Rimmer’s band, The Morton Sisters, and Adam Arth’s
band provided musical entertainment at Hilltop Shelter.
Volunteers Keith and
Susie Bishop, Colin and Sarah Vaillancourt, Jim Finnegan,
and Fred Utlaut served as the BBQ gurus who helped us
launch Fitzgibbon Hospital’s first Backyard BBQ and Kids’

The 26th Annual Pete H. Rea
Memorial Golf Tournament was
held on July 9, 2016 with 56
teams participating. We are
grateful to every sponsor, donor,
player, and volunteer for the
contributions made to make the
event a success. We heard many
compliments about the condition
of the golf course, the fantastic
food, and our smiling volunteers!
The Pete H. Rea Tournament has
earned a reputation as “one of the
most fun golf tournaments in central Missouri”. The day would not be possible
without your help.
Jason Coffman was an outstanding tournament director. Sponsors Elmer Hare
Ford, Gary Liberty, and Graves Menu Maker Foods created a lot of “buzz” with
the new Hole #14 $1,500 Jackpot contest. Congratulations to Chuck Scudder,
winner of the closest to the pin contest on Hole #14.
The tournament netted $14,500 in proceeds that will be used to offset the pur-
chase of 3D mammography equipment as another step forward in improving
the health of the communities we serve. Thank You!

The Murder Mystery Dinner Live Auction item is a great example of how
friends can collaborate prior to a charity event to create a strategy for purchas-
ing a large auction item. The event package was donated by Sara Coman and
Katie Shannon.
Jan Stapleton and Jim Crapenhoft were nominated by the group to host the
event at their home in late June. In the weeks preceding the event, guests
were provided with information about the characters they were assigned to
portray, the time period and location of the event, and a few mysterious secret
twists.
As the event approached, guests engaged in text and verbal sparring with
each other as they built relationships and allies. The plot development contin-
ued throughout the evening and sparring reached its height during the elegant
dinner created by Chef Coman. Board of Trustees member Jacque Eidson’s
daughter served as the chef apprentice and assisted Sara. The group enjoyed
“Whodunit?” private label beverages donated by Katie Shannon throughout the
evening.
The assembly was one member short after dinner when it was revealed that
someone had been murdered! Conversation reached a frantic level as the cast
members attempted to solve the mystery. At the end of the evening, all attend-
ees agreed that the donation was creative, clever, and a lot of fun. Thank you
Katie and Sara!

The Wine Grab is expanding! In 2017, The Fling will feature both Wine and Spirits in “The Grab”. In preparation for this new
addition, J.W. and Jacque Eidson will host the Wine Drop and a Whiskey Tasting event at their home. Tom Jones has agreed to
chair the Whiskey Tasting segment of the event and will educate us on the evolving “craft spirits” distillery market.
We will gladly accept your donation of wine, spirits or both from October 25th until right before Fling 2017. If you are planning a
special vineyard or craft distillery tour, please keep us in mind and bring a bottle home with you to donate. It’s also fun to pool
resources and join with friends to select and donate a great bottle of wine or spirits!
Attention Ladies and Gentlemen!!
Patty Gregory, Coordinator of the Greater Kansas City Project Linus chapter, wasted no time contacting us when her daughter, Lind-
sey Inmon, became manager of the Health Information Management department at Fitzgibbon Hospital. Project Linus is a national
program with chapters in all fifty states. Volunteers (Blanketeers) make blankets that are “collected locally and distributed to children
in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug.” The first shipment received
included more than 20 colorful blankets! We are so happy to be able to provide Project Linus blankets to our young patients. To learn
more, visit www.projectlinus.org.
“Flowers Framed for Fling” was hand-quilted by the Country Patchwork Quilt Guild
and donated as a Live Auction item for The Fling 17.

  • 1. Foundation Focus Patients can now Securely Message Providers 04 I S S U E A u g u s t 2 0 1 6 Marshall, Mo. – Fitzgibbon Hospital and affiliated clinics now provide a revolutionary new way for patients to see their health record and interact with their providers by implementing a full-featured, electronic Patient Portal. The “MyHealth” Patient Portal provides access to individual Electronic Health Records (EHR) via any web-enabled computer and allows patients to securely transmit medical records to other providers or specialists. It is designed to put patients at the center of their care. One of the primary features of the portal is a secure messag- ing feature that allows patients to send private and secure messages to their doctor to request appointments, pre- scription refills and ask ques- tions about their care. This fea- ture was recently enabled for all providers at Marshall Family Practice, Marshall Women’s Care and Brian Brizendine, M.D., surgeon. “Fitzgibbon Hospital and clinics, including Marshall Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Marshall Family Practice, Marshall Surgical, Marshall Women’s Care, Akeman-McBurney Medical Clinic, Grand River Medical Clinic and Fitzgibbon Family Health have imple- mented the patient portal. This is an excit- ing, free tool that empowers patients to take charge of their own health,” said Tom Jones, chief information officer for Fitzgibbon Hospital. Provisions of the Affordable Care Act require the portal to be functional for physician prac- tices. Fitzgibbon has invested more than $200,000 in software upgrades, training and infrastructure to bring this feature to its patients and their families. The portal is just one part of a multi-year movement all health providers are making - from paper records to a computer-based, electronic health record. “The MyHealth Patient Portal is just one of the many provi- sions required of all health care providers under the Affordable Care Act. There is definitely value in moving to a robust electronic health record which can be accessed by patients, but it is not without signifi- cant cost,” said Darin Haug, D.O., president and CEO of Fitzgibbon Hospital. “With so many parts of our society – from shopping to listening to music – moving to a web-based format, it is time that our patients have access to their records in the same way. This is an exciting move for this industry. Because of the amount of time and investment we have made, it is our sincere hope that patients will see the value of the portal and really embrace its use,” said Haug. <continued on page 11> this issue MyHealth Patient Portal P.1 Letter from Dr. Darin Haug P.1 Foundation Update P.2 Helping Hands P.2 Day in the Park P.3 The Fling 2016 P.4 The Fling 2017 - Wine Grab P.5 Friends of Fitzgibbon Report P.8 Golf Tournament P.10 Event Calendar P.12 Foundation Focus Issue 04 August 2016, Produced by the Fitzgibbon Hospital Marketing Department From the CEO The summer has gone by quickly, and we have seen several advances at Fitzgibbon Hospital over the last three months. The 26th Annual Pete H. Rea Memorial Golf Tournament was very successful thanks to our corporate and com- munity supporters and vol- unteers. We also saw a wonderful example of com- munity organizations com- ing together for the good of our citizens with the first ever partnership of Day in the Park. The feedback from our community has been tremendous. It is a sincere pleasure to welcome back long- time Marshall native, Dr. Kylie Heying, to Fitzgibbon Hospital and begin her chi- ropractic practice inside the Fitzgibbon Medical Clinic. She brings excellent train- ing and a compassion- ate spirit for her patients. Growing up in Marshall, she is well known by many in our community, and she is really looking forward to starting her practice. By adding chiropractic ser- vices at Fitzgibbon, with someone of such quality as Dr. Heying, we are con- tinuing our focus on quality compassionate care of the whole person. She will begin seeing patients in September. <continued on page 11> Foundation Calendar of Events for 2016 September 6-7 Books are Fun Book Fair - Hospital Atrium September 9, 7 p.m. Pink Out Football Game – Slater Wildcats vs. Missouri Military Academy September 9 The Great Purse Reveal – Fitzgibbon Hospital Gift Shop September 12-16 The Great Purse Reveal continued September 22, 5 p.m. Glasgow Pink Out Softball & Baseball Games September 22, 7 p.m. Missouri Valley Rodeo Stampede – Tuff Enuf to Wear Pink September 30 MHS Homecoming Parade October 1 MVC Homecoming Parade October 2 Color Run TBD St. Peter’s Breakfast October 5 MHS Powder Puff Game October 7, 7 p.m. MHS Pink Out Football Game – Owls vs. Hannibal Pirates October 15 Canines Against Cancer October 21 Pig Out for Pink Out Lunch sponsored by The Ashford Agency and Cargill November 11 Fitzgibbon Hospital Auxiliary Annual Holiday Bazaar News for our Donor Community Lyceum Theater VIP Event Fitzgibbon Hospital 112 Chris Sporleder, DO, one of the many providers you can securely message through the MyHealth Patient Portal. • 2. Personalized, on-line educational resources are a feature of the MyHealth Patient Portal. The MyHealth Patient Portal is free of charge to all users and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any computer connected to the internet. “The MyHealth Patient Portal not only allows access to a patient’s electronic health record through an easy-to-use website, but it also allows the patient to provide access to other users, for example, a caregiver, for specific results for a set period of time while protecting the rest of their EHR. A patient may want a caregiver, friend, loved one or another provider to have access to certain blood test results for only 24 hours, but they want to protect access to other areas of their record. The portal has functionality to allow patients to set this up themselves,” said Haug. According to Jones, the MyHealth Patient Portal is fully encrypted, using the same security pro- tocols currently used by banking institutions across the country. A study released in January 2014 by Pew Research found that 81 percent of American households use online banking to manage their finances, and 90 percent have checked their account balances using their smart phone. The MyHealth Patient Portal has a large range of functionality including the ability for patients to see lab results within 36 hours of a stay at Fitzgibbon hospital, clinic visit or visit to the ER, see imaging results, view notes by their doctor within four days of an appointment to one of our clinics, securely send messages to the hospital and clinics, request appointments, request prescription renewals, identify phy- sicians who provided care while in the hospi- tal, and read discharge planning instructions from their doctors. Patients also can share appointment schedules with loved ones or employers. Among the fea- tures of the portal is the ability to download and save an individual health record for use in an emergency or while traveling. Filling out pre-vis- it paperwork will also eventually be a function of the MyHealth Patient Portal. In order to view the MyHealth Patient Portal, patients must have an individual email address, to which a secure code will be sent to allow access to their records. To gain access, simply call or visit the Medical Records Department at Fitzgibbon Hospital. Their number is (660)831- 3733. “This really is a revolutionary tool for patients to see the results of their doctor’s visit,” said Haug. “It is all designed for patients to have more control of their own health. This makes it much easier for patients to stay engaged in their overall health by receiving fast access to their own health records and test results.” Volunteer Opportunities Fitzgibbon Hospital is seeking volunteers with a green thumb to care for plants through- out the hospital. The Environmental Services Department has a cart to transport the water barrel so heavy lifting/carrying is not required. This would also be an opportunity to visit with patients and the Fitzgibbon Hospital staff as you make your rounds. If this opportunity is right for you, please contact Donna Smith at 660-229- 7749. The Living Center is seeking volunteers in the following areas: • plant care • light office work in the business office • computer work in the business office • offer snacks and pass ice, punch, and water from the hydration cart Please contact Theresia Metz at 660-886-9676 extension 2800 if you can provide assistance. Foundation Update It’s AMAZING what your donation can do! Over the past three months there have been many opportunities to interact with Fitzgibbon Hospital staff and supporters. We were very busy during May and June preparing for the golf tourna- ment. Once again, sponsors, donors, players, and volun- teers made the tournament a tremendous success. New this year was the Day in the Park event held July 30th. It was fulfilling and reward- ing to collaborate with Jeff Stubblefield, Lori Godsey, the Marshall Parks & Rec staff, and Marshall Democrat-News editor Sarah Reed to create a day filled with affordable family fun. The Foundation Advisory Council quarterly meeting was held in May. Volunteer members of the Council share their time and talents to help us advance the hospital’s mission. They are a tremen- dous resource and their ideas always generate lively discus- sion. Members of the hospital lead- ership team provided a recap of FY2016 and a preview of the year ahead at the annual Employee Forums held in late June and early July. You can help us increase awareness of Fitzgibbon Hospital news by liking our Facebook pages and sharing our posts with your friends. Fitzgibbon Hospital Fitzgibbon Hospital Foundation Fitzgibbon Hospital Auxiliary 2 11 Secure Messaging, continued Your donations to the Helping Hands program provide much needed assistance to members of our community who are faced with difficult choices. As Dr. Haug mentioned at The Fling in March, there are many people in the communities we serve who are facing difficult decisions that are the result of circumstances rather than poor choices. The Helping Hands program has provided $2,651.38 for prescriptions, medical equipment, transpor- tation, and fuel assistance to 82 individuals since January 1, 2016 for an average of $32 per person. It doesn’t take a lot of money to make a difference in the life of a friend in need. We received a thank you note recently from a patient that said in part, “I’m sorry this thank you card is late as your help for getting me some of my medicines sure wasn’t. My nurse had this set up for me. God Bless you.” It is truly amazing what your donations are doing! Helping Hands From the CEO, continued Chief Nursing Officer, Angela Igo R.N., and Alyssa Ferri, C.N.S., have worked hard to build our new Transitional Care Management program, which will bridge the gap in care from the time a per- son is discharged from the hospital until the time they are able to visit their primary care physi- cian. Initially, our program will focus on patients who are considered at high risk for readmission. Alyssa will meet with patients while in the hospital and in their homes. She will be able to assess and assist in managing medications, identify the need for any additional tests, communicate with the patient’s primary care physician and explore potential issues that might hinder a person’s expected recovery. Patient education will remain a central focus throughout the time of care. Jennifer Dickinson, Doctor of Physical Therapy in our Rehabilitation Department, received addi- tional training to assist women with incontinence and pelvic pain issues. Many of these patients suffer in silence, believing these conditions are just a part of normal aging, when it is, in fact, not the case. Jennifer has been receiving referrals from providers both within and outside of our area as she is the only one providing this in our area. It can significantly improve the quality of life for many women in our community. As always, your support is vital in helping us with our continued efforts to provide quality, compas- sionate care. Thank you for all you do in advo- cating for Fitzgibbon Hospital and our mission to improve the health of our community. Darin Haug, D.O. President and CEO Fitzgibbon Hospital Ginger McGraw and Donna Smith are pre- paring for the Great Purse Reveal in the Gift Shop. The event will begin on Friday, Septem- ber 9th and will continue through the following week. Make a note on your calendar so you won’t miss the debut that will showcase new fall lines of scarves, jewelry, gifts, and holiday décor. The Great Purse Reveal The Foundation has received a donation from a Friend of Fitzgibbon designated for recog- nition of our nursing staff. We are creating a ‘T’ Cart that will be stocked with “Treats for Terrific Teamwork”. The ‘T’ Cart will be deliv- ered to a nursing team who has exemplified outstanding teamwork. We know our nursing staff works diligently to provide exceptional patient care. Thank you to the Friend of Fitz- gibbon who has enabled us to provide this recognition. Nursing teams who receive a visit from the ‘T’ Cart will be recognized in the hospital’s monthly internal newsletter. The ‘T’ Cart Pink Out The goal of the Pink Out campaign is to increase cancer awareness in the communities we serve. Activities scheduled to-date are listed in the calendar on the back page of the Foundation Focus. It’s time to order your t-shirt, register for the Color Run, and gear up for all of the great activ- ities. Pink Out proceeds this year will also be used to offset the pur- chase of 3D mammogra- phy equipment. Updates will be posted on the Foundation’s Facebook page so be sure to like and share our posts. • 3. Perfect weather and many free activities drew an estimated 2,000 people to our beautiful Indian Foothills Park on July 30th. It is fair to say that we met our goal of creating a FUNRAISER for the entire family. Day in the Park started early with BBQ contestant check-in, ven- dor set-up, and preparation for many games. F i t z g i b b o n Hospital Auxiliary sponsored a very popular snow cone and slushie booth. In addition to the Aquatic Center’s concession stand, guests could purchase kettle corn, fried Snickers, The Brick BBQ, and Yumeez Homemade Ice Cream. Non-profit organizations set up informational booths and passed out free water. Visitors waited patiently in line for face painting and for the opportunity to dunk several of the candidates whose names appeared on the August 2nd primary ballot. The Marshall Democrat-News car show was a popular stop with more than 40 cars coming and going throughout the day. Dave Rimmer’s band, The Morton Sisters, and Adam Arth’s band provided musical entertainment at Hilltop Shelter. Volunteers Keith and Susie Bishop, Colin and Sarah Vaillancourt, Jim Finnegan, and Fred Utlaut served as the BBQ gurus who helped us launch Fitzgibbon Hospital’s first Backyard BBQ and Kids’ Que contests. Nine adult teams and ten Kids’ Que registrants participated in the event. Winners were given certificates, rib- bons, and cash prizes! Rea Memorial Golf Tournament was held on July 9, 2016 with 56 teams participating. We are grateful to every sponsor, donor, player, and volunteer for the contributions made to make the event a success. We heard many compliments about the condition of the golf course, the fantastic food, and our smiling volunteers! The Pete H. Rea Tournament has earned a reputation as “one of the most fun golf tournaments in central Missouri”. The day would not be possible without your help. Jason Coffman was an outstanding tournament director. Sponsors Elmer Hare Ford, Gary Liberty, and Graves Menu Maker Foods created a lot of “buzz” with the new Hole #14 $1,500 Jackpot contest. Congratulations to Chuck Scudder, winner of the closest to the pin contest on Hole #14. The tournament netted $14,500 in proceeds that will be used to offset the pur- chase of 3D mammography equipment as another step forward in improving the health of the communities we serve. Thank You! Golf Tournament

The Murder Mystery Dinner Live Auction item is a great example of how friends can collaborate prior to a charity event to create a strategy for purchas- ing a large auction item. The event package was donated by Sara Coman and Katie Shannon. Jan Stapleton and Jim Crapenhoft were nominated by the group to host the event at their home in late June. In the weeks preceding the event, guests were provided with information about the characters they were assigned to portray, the time period and location of the event, and a few mysterious secret twists. As the event approached, guests engaged in text and verbal sparring with each other as they built relationships and allies. The plot development contin- ued throughout the evening and sparring reached its height during the elegant dinner created by Chef Coman. Board of Trustees member Jacque Eidson’s daughter served as the chef apprentice and assisted Sara. The group enjoyed “Whodunit?” private label beverages donated by Katie Shannon throughout the evening. The assembly was one member short after dinner when it was revealed that someone had been murdered! Conversation reached a frantic level as the cast members attempted to solve the mystery. In 2017, The Fling will feature both Wine and Spirits in “The Grab”. In preparation for this new addition, J.W. and Jacque Eidson will host the Wine Drop and a Whiskey Tasting event at their home. Tom Jones has agreed to chair the Whiskey Tasting segment of the event and will educate us on the evolving “craft spirits” distillery market. We will gladly accept your donation of wine, spirits or both from October 25th until right before Fling 2017. If you are planning a special vineyard or craft distillery tour, please keep us in mind and bring a bottle home with you to donate. It’s also fun to pool resources and join with friends to select and donate a great bottle of wine or spirits! Attention Ladies and Gentlemen!! Patty Gregory, Coordinator of the Greater Kansas City Project Linus chapter, wasted no time contacting us when her daughter, Lind- sey Inmon, became manager of the Health Information Management department at Fitzgibbon Hospital. Project Linus is a national program with chapters in all fifty states. Volunteers (Blanketeers) make blankets that are “collected locally and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need of a big hug.” The first shipment received included more than 20 colorful blankets! We are so happy to be able to provide Project Linus blankets to our young patients. To learn more, visit www.projectlinus.org. “Flowers Framed for Fling” was hand-quilted by the Country Patchwork Quilt Guild and donated as a Live Auction item for The Fling 17.
