Ricardo Padilla Final Intern Presentation

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Good Morning Everyone, My name is Ricardo Padilla, and I will be giving you a brief presentation of what my experience was like here at SDG&E.
  2. First I’m going to give you some background on who I am and where I come from. Second I will be talking about the department I was assigned to and the responsibilities it has within the company. Third, I will be going over the project that I worked on during the majority of my time here as an intern.
  3. I am currently an Accounting Student @ SDSU and I am expected to graduate in May of 2017 with a Bachelors in Accounting and a minor in real estate. I am a member of the honorable beta alpha psi organization at SDSU and also serve as a tutor at the Educational Opportunity Program or EOP for short. Serving as a tutor at the EOP really made me realize how important communication is because you might think you know a particular subject, but you don’t realize how much you don’t know it until you are asked to explain it and that’s when you find out that you actually didn’t know it as much as you thought you did. I am also a member of the Small Business Consulting program @ SDSU. And to the right is a pic of the team I was part of last semester who took first place in the Small Business Consulting Presentations.
  4. I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Oceanside, CA just 45 minutes north of San Diego with no traffic. With traffic takes about an hour and some change to get home. You might be wondering who that guy in the mask is.. It’s me and the reason I put it up there is what better way to convey that I’m a Halloween baby than to show a picture of myself in my Halloween costume on my birthday. After I graduated from Oceanside High, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the summer of 2007 where I served honorably for five years. While in the military I worked as a personnel clerk. I was in charge of checking in Marines who checked in to Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton, CA. If a marine checked into Camp Pendleton, they checked in at our building first to make sure that their Administrative and Financial Information was up to date. Now Even though the military was not for me because I obviously got out after 5 years, I wouldn’t change the experiences I had while in because they gave me the discipline, determination, and perseverance to undertake any path I wish to take whether professionally or mentally. When I was in school I would hear a lot of students complain about the work or the fact that they had to be there, I was having the time of my life because I least I didn’t’ have to work late nights without getting paid overtime for my work.
  5. If you already didn’t know. I consider myself a family man because I love spending time with my family. To the right is a picture of my beautiful daughter Izabella Marie wearing my SDSU hat who I love dearly but can drive me nuts at times. In the middle is a picture of me, my daughter, and fiancé enjoying our Christmas together. I also enjoy traveling. To the left, there is a picture of me and my relatives who reside in Cancun. I visited after I left the military and loved my experience there. I can’t wait to go back and visit.
  6. Now, you might of seen these faces in Century park and wondered what they did. Well they are part of this team called the Transmission Revenue Group. The Transmission Revenue Group (“TRG”) is a regulatory function within the Electric Supply Business Segment. The TRG manages the Company's numerous Transmission costs of service and rate design filings. Every year, the TRG submits to the FERC several rate case filings for the Company’s Transmission Business Segment. Working in the Transmission Revenue Group was a fast paced and team‐oriented environment and allowed me gain exposure to the regulatory environment. Now everybody is probably wondering what Transmission is just like I was when I got my offer letter and it said that I was going to be part of this Transmission Revenue Group. When you first hear transmission your like what could that be. I thought I was going to be working on cars or something. However in SDG&E’s case, when referring to transmission, it means sending and delivering high-voltage electricity from power plants to distribution points near homes and businesses. High voltage in this case is 69KV and above.
  7. During the majority of my internship. I worked on the Generation Interconnection Project. I was tasked with revamping the outdated filing method which calculates what we charge our third party generators that interconnect into an SDG&E substation. The old filing method was outdated and I was tasked to make it more user friendly and conform with our newer filings. An example of a third party generator is the Kumeyaay wind farm that we visited on our first Internship Tour. The Kumeyaay windfarm is actually a third party generator that interconnects into SDG&E’s substations. To ensure substation security and avoid the need for 3rd party generator employees to enter into an SDG&E substation, SDG&E employees operate and maintain the applicable interconnection facilities owned by the generator. The costs associated with these services are recovered through a transmission operation and maintenance charge billed to the 3rd party generator on a monthly or yearly basis.
  8. I also participated in the powerplan project which was implemented to facilitate and streamline the revenue requirement filing process for the transmission revenue group. Instead of relying on other departments to compile cost data for their filing, with this new powerplan database, once implemented, the TRG will have cost information readily available, which will save a significant amount of time since they won’t have to gather the data themselves from different sources My contribution to this project was to test the integrity of the data that was being extracted from the new database and making sure it was accurate and consistent.
  9. The visits to the different power plants and substations were a great experience that I will never forget. Here I am taking a selfie @ the Kumeyaay Windfarm where we got to see the size and mechanical features of the wind turbines. Here we are at the Talega substation where we got to learn about their operations. And here I am at the Palomar energy center.
  10. I really enjoyed the visit to the Skills & Training Center because I got to see the men and women who are on the front lines that risk their lives on a daily basis. These are what you would consider the grunts of the military. They are the ones out there getting they’re hands dirty and their job is an essential part of the company, because without out them, there would be a lot of unhappy customers with no power.
  11. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole internship process and my main goal for this internship was to gain some real world experience that I could take with me on any professional path I wish to take. During my time here, I developed my technical skills, grew my network, gained insight into how SDG&E makes their money, and dramatically improved my excel skills. I think any time a reputable company like SDG&E gives you the opportunity to work for them, then you try to learn as much as you can from that company and apply it to your professional development. The End!
