2. Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Bright,
simplistic
colour palate.
Emphasis on teamwork to
overcome enemies.
Cartoony art style
Simple beat-em-up
with a clear identity.
Obvious comedic
element.
3. Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Scott Pilgrim is probably one of the most unique
Sidescroller available today. Its Retro graphics are stylistic
instead of being a product of the times The cartoony tone of
Scott Pilgrim is what I want to inspire my game, the art style
is very original and unlike most other 8 bit Sidescroller. It’s
this originality in style that I want to capture and use for my
own game. Though with its own special twist. The
cartoonish art style and comedic tone fit what I want for my
game. Though the detail in the character sprites will be too
difficult for me to achieve in the time available, it is still a
good inspiration and the backgrounds might be doable.
4. The X-Men
Ties in to
lore of the
source
material.
Superhero themed.
I’ll create some original
Superheroes for my own
game
Bright,
contrasting
colours.
Co-op
Multiplayer
Clearly marked
health bars.
The Co-op element and superhero theme
are similar to what I envision for my own
game. With updated graphics and a
unique soundtrack.
5. X-Men
What drew me to the X-men game was the strong
emphasis on Co-op gameplay and teamwork to overcome
the large waves of enemies in the game. The game could
be played by up to four people at a time and it made for
some very fun moments playing as four different mutants
with different abilities. The superhero theme also allows for
some fantastical elements, which lend themselves well to a
creative, enjoyable gaming experience.
6. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991
soundtrack)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BqLIyS11Ws
Sonic the Hedgehog uses a simple, repetitive 8-bit soundtrack. The songs are upbeat
and cheerful. This matches the tone of the overall game: Bright and hyperactive.
Most of the music is fast paced and high pitched. This is done to show the attitude
and characteristics of the main protagonist; Sonic. Who is very impatient and runs
everywhere he goes. It is very clever of the music to outline this. I plan to make an 8-
bit soundtrack for my own game, so this will be a good inspiration. Link above.
7. Life is Strange (Soundtrack)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rst3w6W6zw
Though most of the soundtrack for Life is Strange is licenced. I think the
peaceful tone and indie rock theme would be well suited to my soundtrack.
Though I intend to make my soundtrack 8-bit, the indie rock tone of Life is
Strange is what I want my music to be similar to. Though it will be difficult to
create such intricate, smooth songs and then transition them into 8-bit, the
inspiration is what I want for my music nevertheless. Link above.
A game’s music is one
of the most immersive
aspects. So a
soundtrack done right
can make or break a
game. My soundtrack
will be 8-bit, though
the music will be
fairly modern and
original.
8. Research Analysis
I have used two games to show the visual style that I want my game to be similar to,
and another two to show what I envision for my soundtrack. The theme for the
visuals is bright, cartoonish and colourful games with a heavy emphasis on side
scrolling beat- em-up games. While the music leans towards an indie rock inspired,
8 bit soundtrack.
I Hope to produce a brightly coloured and comedic toned game. With a heavy focus
on Co-op multiplayer and teamwork. The music will also be very important, as I
think, if done right. It will outline the stranger tone of the game very well.
10. Interview 1
1. If you were to play a Superhero-themed game, what sort of
abilities would you want the playable characters to have and
how would they be used?
2. If I was playing a superhero game I would want abilities such as flying and x-ray vision to
help get to places faster or to unsolved any mystery's that need to be solved.
3. What kind of setting do you think would make a game
interesting and why?
4. It should be set in the future on earth. A game should be dark, mysterious and thrilling
because it makes it more exciting to play because something unexpected could happen
at any minute.
5. If you wanted to play a Superhero themed games, would you
prefer a rhythm, puzzle, adventure, action game etc.?
6. I would prefer an adventure game where you have to explore and complete missions and
side missions but some puzzle elements could be in their for example to be able to move
objects in a certain order without collapsing anything.
11. Interview 1
1. Observation: the interviewee seems to favour a futuristic
RPG style of game. As well as puzzle based gameplay,
with some combat mixed in.
2. What this says about my audience: My audience seems
to prefer modern games, with RPG elements. This will be
difficult to translate into a pixelated game, but I will try to
use certain elements of modern gaming to try and appeal
to a wider audience.
3. How will your product appeal to this audience: I will try to
include a more modern twist. Hopefully in the soundtrack,
which I base heavily on modern indie Rock and the sprites,
which I plan to give a cartoonish, modern appearance.
12. Interview 2
1. If you were to play a Superhero-themed game, what sort of abilities
would you want the playable characters to have and how would
they be used?
2. I would like them to have abilities that are not to overpowered as then the person doesn’t
have to rely on their skills they can just button mash. As for actual powers maybe the
character could have x-ray vision to help him locate enemies through walls and maybe
some sort of offensive ability.
3. What kind of setting do you think would make a game interesting and
why?
4. I think an urban city environment where you have to fight criminals would be interesting
as often times super hero games you have to fight other super villains.
5. If you wanted to play a Superhero themed games, would you prefer a
rhythm, puzzle, adventure, action game etc.?
6. I would prefer a puzzle adventure game as it will be well paced it would fit the super hero
game them and you could use the previously mentioned x-ray power to help you solver
puzzles.
13. Interview 2
1. Observation: this interviewee seems to favour a
challenging puzzle adventure game, similar to the Tomb
Raider or Uncharted series.
2. What this says about my audience: My audience enjoys
well detailed, story driven games. With an exciting subject
matter and well-realised characters.
3. How will your product appeal to this audience: My game
will be driven by the main characters and their relationship
with one another. As they battle enemies and explore the
surrounding area.
