2. Text on Screen
The first image that appears in the trailer is the logo for the
first distribution company Metro Goldwyn Mayer. It fades in
on the screen after 19 seconds of the trailer starting and
fades out 1 second later. At 20 seconds the second
distribution company Columbia logo fades in and cuts to
the footage at 21 seconds. These two companies need to
be included as they need to be given credit involved in the
film and also to promote the companies generally too.
Throughout the main section of the trailer there is no appearance of text on
screen at all. The next time text is used is at 2 minutes 23 seconds when the
title of the film appears with the James Bond franchise logo placed
underneath. The title in in a large white font which is also easy to read which
is meant to help the title stick in the audiences minds more. The use of the
logo of the franchise automatically tells people what the film is apart of the
James Bond set of films as everyone knows that James Bond is 007. Also
the use of the gun shape next to the 007 tells people that it is a action film.
The shot ten fades out at 2 minutes 25 seconds.
The last frame to include text on screen is the last frame of the trailer. The
main focus of this slide is to tell the audience when the film is going to be
released which in this case is November. The font used for the release date
is again very easy to read as it is white set against black and it is big so it
stays with the audience. It also has an effect on it as there are black dots
over the letters of November which could connote blood splatters and
emphasise the genre more. The next biggest piece of text is the
#SKYFALL in the middle of the frame. This promotes the idea that people
can go and talk about the trailer with other fans and can compare their
views or just talk about their excitement for the release of it. Moreover,
including that the film can be seen in the IMAX means that the film will be
able to make more money as seeing a film a the IMAX is more of an
experience than going to an ordinary cinema to see it.
3. Sound
For the first few seconds of the trailer the there is a short piece of music played to
support the footage on screen which seems very dramatic and exciting which helps to
grab the audiences attention quicker. Then the soundtrack fades out to be replaced
with dialogue.
For the main section of the trailer (21 seconds- 2 minutes 54) there is dramatic music
played throughout but played quietly as it is not the main focus. At this point the
dialogue and sound effects between the characters is the most important aspect as it
explains both the genre and gives a brief idea as to what the film is about.
A lot of sound effects were used in this trailer as they supports what is happening on
screen. As most of the action can not happen in real life (e.g. explosions and a train
crashing through a building) the sound effects team have to watch the footage of the
CGI explosion for example and add in the sound afterwards as without the sound it
would just seem odd.
The sound crew also have to work hard on fading the music in and out at the right
time for the dialogue to play or the audience will not be able to hear the important
parts of the trailer they would need to hear to decide whether or not to see it.
4. Camera Work
Throughout the trailer many different camera, shots and movements have been used such as:
Establishing shot
This type of shot is used to
set the scene for the audience so
they are able to tell roughly where
they are. This case London city.
Two Shot
To show the relationship between
two characters at the same time. In
this case the shot could show that
the man is in charge as he is
wearing a suit but also looks
relaxed as he is reclining in the
armchair and is not wearing a
jacket. While on the other hand the
woman is in a full suit and is sitting
up very straight to show that she
feels pressured or out of place.
Mid shot
Shows the characters expression
and some torso. This shot allows the
audience to see that Bond is
portrayed as sophisticated and
respected .
The image below is another mid
shot and shows the audience that
Bond is strong, fit and handsome so
men want to be like him and women
want to be with him.
Close up
To show what the character is
thinking without them speaking.
This particular shot is quite
effective as depth of field has been
used as the gun he is holding is not
in focus. I think this was done to
make the audience focus on what
Bond looks like as it says that he is
focused and ready.
The main camera movement used was
a tracking shot. This is mainly used so
the audience can feel like they are a
part of the action and can keep up with
a scene if people are moving. Used in
scenes where there is a chase e.g.
running or in a car.
5. Editing
For the majority of the trailer the editing was slightly fast, the different scenes would
play for a little while so the audience could grab information about the plot line.
Towards the end (1 minute 54 seconds) the editing cuts get faster showing a
montage of some of the best clips from the film flashing from one scene to another
within a second or so. Including a montage helps to build up the tension to the
audience wonders what will happen and feel compelled to go and see the film.
Placing the montage at the end helps the trailer stick in peoples heads and helps to
get them excited about the film.
The editing technique used throughout the film is fast paced jump cuts as this
allows the creators to put as much information and footage they would like into a
trailer compared to using a fade in and out effect.
Editing in different CGI effects and sound effects is challenging as they have to be
so precise as to match the effects with each other and with the raw footage.
6. Mise en Scene
Props
Setting
There are many different props
used throughout the trailer to help
the audience identify that it the film
is a part of the action spy genre.
Many different cars were used to
film chases between the characters and also just to destroy. Impressive technology was also used to emphasise
the spy idea as they usually have access to the newest equipment available.
The film was shot at many
different locations. It is based
in London as that is where MI 6
is located. But Bond is sent to
many other places to complete.
his mission which makes it more interesting. The setting also gives the audience an idea of what to expect in the
following scene. For example filming in London can tell the audience that the scene is based in MI 6 and will
be ‘professional’. The second location photo gives off the idea that there could be some romance or flirting in the
scene from the low key lighting used and the use of candles.
Lighting
Throughout the trailer both high key and
low key lighting is used. High key lighting
is when the scene appears to be a lot
lighter and is light by natural lighting. Low
key lighting refers to the use of an artificial
light that focuses on the main subject in
the frame e.g. the characters.
7. Costume
An audience can assume a lot about a character from the first few seconds of being on screen just from
their costume. Take the three images from above as examples. The audience can tell straight away that
the brunette on the left will be the stereotypical Bond girl as like all the other girls in the previous movies,
she is all made up, naturally attractive and is in a tight fitting evening dress which shows of her figure
nicely.
The second image of Judy Dench shows that her character is very professional and is respected for her
work and skill unlike the representation of the brunette.
Lastly the shot of Bond shows that he is respected and accepted as high class because of the suit he is
wearing. He feels comfortable in himself because of his strong structure and his determined expression.
