Node.js is a very popular framework for developing asynchronous, event-driven, reactive applications. Red Hat JBoss Data Grid, an in-memory distributed database designed for fast access to large volumes of data and scalability, has recently gained compatibility with Node.js letting reactive applications use it as a persistence layer. Thanks to near caching, JBoss Data Grid offers excellent response times for data queried regularly, and its continuous remote event support means data can get pushed from the data grid to the Node.js application instead of having to wait for the data grid to serve it. In this session, we'll show how to build Node.js applications that use JBoss Data Grid as a persistence layer.

Service mesh implementations help move critical application networking functionality out of the applications and into the infrastructure. With a service mesh like Istio, for example, you can move complicated traffic routing, resiliency aspects, and top-line metric collection out of the application code. This helps you build complicated distributed systems a bit more safely. But can Istio help with solving security issues? Christian Posta explores some of the ways Istio helps you build more secure systems with mutual TLS, OAuth 2.0, and JSON Web Token verification. Security starts with defining trust boundaries and establishing identities. Istio helps do this by leveraging SPIFEE to assign identity and lay the foundation for zero-trust application networking. Istio then leverages this identity to take over the issuance and management of workload identity documents (e.g., x509 certificates), which can then be used to provide client authentication and mTLS. Istio also helps with OAuth flows, JWT verification, RBAC/ABAC, and much more. You may be drawn into using Istio for its traffic management functionality, but most customers Christian works with find themselves much more interested in the security aspects once they learn what they can do with it. Large-scale Javascript applications benefit from a modular approach that let code be reused both within the application and across repeated implementations. In this session, we'll look at the modular approach used to build reusable Javascript modules in the Red Hat mobile field workforce management application (WFM) showcased in this year's Summit middleware keynote demo. Reusable modules for WFM are packaged as node package manager (npm) modules, providing a consistent format for both server and client sides using Node.js and Browserify. Modules are loosely coupled using the Mediator pattern and they broadcast user actions and state changes giving the application and other modules the opportunity to hook into those events. Additionally, visual components are packaged in a framework-agnostic manner, providing reusable UI components. Change Data Capture or CDC is the practice of moving the changes made in an important transactional system to other systems, so that data is kept current and consistent across the enterprise. CDC keeps reporting and analytic systems working on the latest, most accurate data. Many different CDC strategies exist. Each strategy has advantages and disadvantages. Some put an undue burden on the source database. They can cause queries or applications to become slow or even fail. Some bog down network bandwidth, or have big delays between change and replication. Each business process has different requirements, as well. For some business needs, a replication delay of more than a second is too long. For others, a delay of less than 24 hours is excellent. Which CDC strategy will match your business needs? Putting in place data stores to support a modern enterprise that is now reliant on data can lead to confusion and chaos.  Enterprises have many needs for databases, including for cache, operational, data warehouse, master data, ERP, analytical, graph data, data lake, time series data, and numerous other specific needs. Today’s enterprises have an unprecedented variety of data store choices to meet the needs of the varied workloads of an enterprise because there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to data stores. Putting in place data stores to support a modern enterprise that is now reliant on data can lead to confusion and chaos.  Enterprises have many needs for databases, including for cache, operational, data warehouse, master data, ERP, analytical, graph data, data lake, time series data, and numerous other specific needs. While vendor offerings have exploded in recent years, in due time frameworks will integrate components into what amounts to, for practical purposes, a single offering for multiple workloads, perhaps even for the enterprise. A multi-model database is a database that can store, manage, and query data in multiple models, such as relational, document-oriented, key-value, graph (triplestore), and column store. An enterprise will find reduced overhead and other synergies from choosing a single vendor for these workloads. This session will explore the multi-model option and some criteria that decision makers should evaluate when choosing a multi-model solution.
