ORNL is DOE’s largest multiprogram science lab, with well-defined research capabilities in materials, biology, and computational sciences. We integrate and apply these capabilities to all four DOE missions: science, energy, national nuclear security, and cleanup. ORNL celebrated its 60th birthday in February 2003. Clinton Laboratories, as it was known in its earliest years, was a pilot plant for the production and chemical recovery of plutonium. It also served as a training facility for the technical personnel who went on to operate the plutonium production plant at Hanford, Washington Once its war-time mission was complete, the question of what to do with the scientific and technical expertise and facilities that had been assembled was answered by creating national laboratories. ORNL is the oldest national laboratory still at its original location.
