Newsletter 1 – August 2014
Dear Parents and Fellow Educators,
Children can only remember a certain number of words by memory. Most will not remember sight
words by memory long term - the brain doesn't work like that for the majority of kids. It why we
'code' everything in SSP - which means mapping speech sounds to sound pics.

So no more Look, Cover, Say, Write ...and then forget a week later. Instead we use Duck Level
Awards, not Magic Words. This helps with reading and spelling.
To best help ALL children start getting them used to splitting words into speech sounds, using Duck
Hands, and then using lines and numbers to show their brain where each sits. So no syllables- just
speech sounds.

If two speech sounds roll together then split for spelling- so f/r/og (not fr) Every speech sound is
used, and every letter. There is nothing silent, magic, long or short!
Then show the child the right word, and work out which sound pics go on which line- and refer to
the spelling clouds. Get a keyring- on the shop at www.myspeedyssp.com - and a whiteboard. Ideally
parents have them in the back of the car for Detective work!
The clouds are for exploratory work- look at as many words as you can, say them, split them into
speech sounds, work out the sound pics, and look at other sound pic options for those speech
sounds in the clouds.
You don't teach the clouds, you explore them. Children get used to using them for the final stage of
the SSP Spelling Strategy- they try different ones to see which 'looks' right, but if they aren't sure just
tell them. Don't draw it out.

It shows how to organise it all, and is ideal as something to watch together as a staff team. Sorry for
my sore throat and croaky voice throughout. The new videos mentioned - for Code Level Stations-
will be available tomorrow evening to all who have the Ultimate USB.
Ill email you the links, and instructions about downloading it to your hard drive, to watch on
whiteboards and laptops without the internet. These will replace the daily lessons as shorter, more
intensive, and suitable for listening stations so that all can work at their own level.
This guarantees that your lowest Prep students benchmark at 15 after 4 terms- your Year 1s are
fluent in 3 terms, and Year 2s in 2 terms – from when you start this, if you follow it as shown here.
That’s EVERY student. You will stop failing the 6 or so who will be at below expected levels, using any
other strategies. Coded readers can be found on www.sspreaders.com – PMs are not suitable until
the end of the Yellow Level, as children can’t code them with fluency, and for comprehension.

The clouds are for exploratory work- look at as many words as you can, say them, split them into speech sounds, work out the sound pics, and look at other sound pic options for those speech sounds in the clouds. You don't teach the clouds, you explore them. Children get used to using them for the final stage of the SSP Spelling Strategy- they try different ones to see which 'looks' right, but if they aren't sure just tell them. Don't draw it out.
