1. Phonemic Awareness; SSP Green Level
Print and laminate these on separate cards.
Hold the card so they cant see it, say the sounds, show them the card and say
the word. Do this with all the cards, without them having to do anything but
listen.
Then say you are going to say the sounds, and they have to say the word
before you. So when you turn it over give them a second to say it. Even
though they will see the illustration with repetition their brains will start to
anticipate seeing the illustration, when they hear the speech sounds.
Also do it the other way around. Show the illustration, they close their eyes
and you say the word, and then the sounds. After you’ve done this, in the
same way every time, ask if they can say the sounds with you. So show the
illustration, they close eyes, you say the word, and then together you say the
sounds.
Repetition is key, as well as limiting words and explanations. They need to
become really familiar with these illustrations – so use these in as many
different activities as you can. The print is for YOU, not the children. You want
them to look at the illustrations and straight away think ‘ant sip tap snap
pants sit spin pants tan spin ‘
These are also available as animations, to use on whiteboards.
