Constructing an Essay
Introduction
In this essay I will be introducing the manner in which I would like to see participants
write their essay. First I will be introducing, how to set the page up. Secondly, I will
be introducing how to construct an essay by beginning with an introduction, flowing
through throughout the body and then finishing with a conclusion. Finally I will be
discussing citations, Apa referencing and giving final hints for writing essays.
Setting up your page
When a participant initially sets up their page, they are invited to go to the insert tag
up the top beside the home button and click on it. Then they are invited to go to the
footer page and click on blank three columns. In those columns, they are invited to
write their name, their student identification, and in the middle write the name of the
module as well as the name of the assignment. Finally in the third column students
are invited to write the year. Once they have finished that click on the insert and go
to the page number tab. They are invited to click on the bottom page number three, it
will say page 1 of 1. Once they have done this, they go to the page layout section,
and have a look at the indent section. This should be saying, 0cm for both the left
and right. Finally in the home tab, students are invited to find the line spacing tab. It
has an arrow pointing up, and an arrow pointing down. Once they are in this tab,
click on the 1.5 line spacing option. The final aspect will see the students chose the
Arial font size 12. Once participants have completed these exercises, their essay
and format should look like this essay.
Constructing an essay
All essays begin with an introduction. The introduction, introduces the content
participants are about to present in their essay. An important feature of the
introduction stems from the language. The student for example will be utilising words

such as, I will be introducing, as well as the next aspect I will be introducing is. The
participant needs to utilise words that link from one sentence to the next so that the
essay flows. Once the introduction is completed, the writer starts creating the body in
the exact manner it is introduced and to also make sure everything is set in a
chronological order so that it makes sense. Once the body has been completed, the
writer concludes with a summary. The writer will then go back to the introduction and
highlight that they have touched base with everything in the order that it was
introduced. The writer may conclude with any new discoveries they have found in
writing the essay however, they are not to add any extra information that does not
link to any other part of the essay.
Citations and Apa referencing
An integral part of essay writing is citations and referencing. The Apa referencing
style is followed by most research Universities and therefore is the most popular. I
encourage all students to download a copy of Apa referencing and citations from the
online library to help with your essays. One way a citation can be used is by saying,
according to state the authors last name only (year in brackets) give their reference,
and then write (in brackets, the page and page number). A direct quote will look like
this. " What the Takitoru framework brings to the fore are two points. The first point
analyses their language and perceptions of things Māori and then counters their
legitimacy in being able to speak about those issues from a position of authority. The
second point implements a comparative analysis between historically documented
facts, and stereotypical labels based on perceptions of a western epistemology and
therefore work towards demystifying perceptions by bringing clarity to the discussion"
(Karena, R,D,W, 2012, pg.19). These are just a couple of examples relating to
citations. Apa referencing seems to be another area that needs looking into. All
references should include the authors surname and initials. (The year in brackets).
Title. Place, country, publisher. If you are missing any of these components in your
essay, your reference is not complete. The second popular reference is from an
online source. This should include the authors name, (the year in brackets).Title.
Retrieved, the full date it was retrieved for example May 20 2012 from: Then the
hyper link (APa reference, 2012). If there are any components missing your

reference is not complete. Finally, your conclusion and reference should be on
separate pages, not on the same page. A final hint will include proof reading your
work, as well as giving your essay to a peer to read to ascertain that you have
answered all of the criteria. All writers should check the points given for each part of
the criteria and specifically aim for those parts of the criteria that make up the most
points.
Conclusion
In summary I would like to conclude with stating that this essay was put together to
support participants in constructing their essay. The first aspect identified how to set
up your page. The second aspect initiated how to construct the essay in terms of the
introduction, the body and the conclusion. Finally the essay discussed citations, Apa
referencing and gave final hints for when writing an essay. This exercise is in answer
to supporting participants with essay writing with the hope that these hints will be
helpful with future essay writing.

Rawiri Waretini-Karena: 98002274 Ngā Roopu Manaaki- Assignment 1 2014 Page 1 of 4 Constructing an Essay Introduction In this essay I will be introducing the manner in which I would like to see participants write their essay. First I will be introducing, how to set the page up. Secondly, I will be introducing how to construct an essay by beginning with an introduction, flowing through throughout the body and then finishing with a conclusion. Finally I will be discussing citations, Apa referencing and giving final hints for writing essays. Setting up your page When a participant initially sets up their page, they are invited to go to the insert tag up the top beside the home button and click on it. Then they are invited to go to the footer page and click on blank three columns. In those columns, they are invited to write their name, their student identification, and in the middle write the name of the module as well as the name of the assignment. Finally in the third column students are invited to write the year. Once they have finished that click on the insert and go to the page number tab. They are invited to click on the bottom page number three, it will say page 1 of 1. Once they have done this, they go to the page layout section, and have a look at the indent section. This should be saying, 0cm for both the left and right. Finally in the home tab, students are invited to find the line spacing tab. It has an arrow pointing up, and an arrow pointing down. Once they are in this tab, click on the 1.5 line spacing option. The final aspect will see the students chose the Arial font size 12. Once participants have completed these exercises, their essay and format should look like this essay. Constructing an essay All essays begin with an introduction. The introduction, introduces the content participants are about to present in their essay. An important feature of the introduction stems from the language. The student for example will be utilising words

The participant needs to utilise words that link from one sentence to the next so that the essay flows. Once the introduction is completed, the writer starts creating the body in the exact manner it is introduced and to also make sure everything is set in a chronological order so that it makes sense. Once the body has been completed, the writer concludes with a summary. The writer will then go back to the introduction and highlight that they have touched base with everything in the order that it was introduced. The writer may conclude with any new discoveries they have found in writing the essay however, they are not to add any extra information that does not link to any other part of the essay. Citations and Apa referencing An integral part of essay writing is citations and referencing. The Apa referencing style is followed by most research Universities and therefore is the most popular. I encourage all students to download a copy of Apa referencing and citations from the online library to help with your essays. One way a citation can be used is by saying, according to state the authors last name only (year in brackets) give their reference, and then write (in brackets, the page and page number). A direct quote will look like this. " What the Takitoru framework brings to the fore are two points. The first point analyses their language and perceptions of things Māori and then counters their legitimacy in being able to speak about those issues from a position of authority. The second point implements a comparative analysis between historically documented facts, and stereotypical labels based on perceptions of a western epistemology and therefore work towards demystifying perceptions by bringing clarity to the discussion" (Karena, R,D,W, 2012, pg.19). These are just a couple of examples relating to citations. Apa referencing seems to be another area that needs looking into. All references should include the authors surname and initials. (The year in brackets). Title. Place, country, publisher. If you are missing any of these components in your essay, your reference is not complete. The second popular reference is from an online source. This should include the authors name, (the year in brackets).Title. Retrieved, the full date it was retrieved for example May 20 2012 from: Then the hyper link (APa reference, 2012). If there are any components missing your

Finally, your conclusion and reference should be on separate pages, not on the same page. A final hint will include proof reading your work, as well as giving your essay to a peer to read to ascertain that you have answered all of the criteria. All writers should check the points given for each part of the criteria and specifically aim for those parts of the criteria that make up the most points. Conclusion In summary I would like to conclude with stating that this essay was put together to support participants in constructing their essay. The first aspect identified how to set up your page. The second aspect initiated how to construct the essay in terms of the introduction, the body and the conclusion. Finally the essay discussed citations, Apa referencing and gave final hints for when writing an essay. This exercise is in answer to supporting participants with essay writing with the hope that these hints will be helpful with future essay writing.
