Cancel culture is when a person says or does something
the public disagrees with, and then the decision is made

With how much ideas and perspectives have

would think adopting a modernized form of bullying is
the last thing this progressive generation would do.

circumstances have occurred. Understandably, Gen
Z began to have the need to take social justice into
their own hands.
They adopt a false mentality that cancel culture is
a form of activism.
As stated by former US president Barack Obama in
the New York Times, “ʻThatʼs not activism. Thatʼs
not bringing about change,ʼ he said. ʻIf all youʼre
doing is casting stones, youʼre probably not going
to get that far ʼ” (Rueb & Taylor, 2022)
Social Justice.

Many users take cancel culture as a way to voice
their opinions to celebrities

attention and press to them, resulting in support
due to the harmful messages online
BE HEARD.

tweeting hateful messages towards them
7. E ects. MENTAL HEALTH
Canceling someone has the tendency to
turn into bullying, whether it is publically for
or directly to the person getting canceled.
According to mental health specialist, Steven
Hassan, “Cancel culture has the ability to become
criminal threats, invasion of privacy or driving a
person to suicide” (Connors).
The person faces endless amount of hateful and
threatening messages constantly from people all
over social media.
Therefore, damaging their mental health and
causing depression or even suicide.
8. E ects. Ostracism
Cancel culture has gone to the extent of
ostracising someone from the public, and
not only online.
People have been losing jobs, scholarships,
businesses, relationships, credability, and
reputations all because of cancel culture.
Therefore, ruining all chances in redemption,
progression, or even remorse in the person
making the mistakes.
Their future is their past.

one mistake was put under a
magnifying glass for the whole
world to inspect
