25. Early Hints that Howard Might Become a Wilderness Rabbi
When Howard was a child he used to play in the woods near his home
all day long. At first his parents left him alone. But because he used to
venture deeper and deeper into the woods his parents began to worry.
The woods were unsafe in their mind. There were wild animals, poisonous
plants, stinging insects, dangerous cliffs, and unsavory people lurking in
the woods.
So his parents decided to share their concerns with him.
“Howard”, they said, “we notice how much you enjoy spending time in
the woods. Why do you prefer the woods over playing ball with your
friends or riding your bike in the park?”
To their surprise Howard replied, “I go there to find God”.
“Well that is great. We’re glad you are seeking God. But don’t you
know that God is the same everywhere?”
“Yes, I know this”, Howard said, “but I am not.”
