Chemical weed management in wheat
3. • Critical period for crop-weed competition:
In dwarf wheat - 30-40 DAS
In tall wheat - 35-50 DAS
• Yield reduction up to - 20-40%
• Dwarf varieties of crops are more susceptible to weed crop
competition than the tall because initially they grow slowly
4. Narrow leaf weeds:
o Phalaris minor
o Avena fatua
o Lolium rigidium
o Polypogon monspeliensis
o Poa annua
Major Weed flora in Wheat
7. Broad leaf weeds:
o Chenopodium album
o Melilotus alba
o Carthamus oxycantha
o Anagalis arvensis
o Circium arvense
o Convolvulus arvensis
o Argemone mexicana

Cyperus esculentus It should not be applied if rain is expected
within 8 hours.

or
sulfo sulfuron @ 20-40 g/ha
or
fenoxaprop-p-ethyl 100-120 g/ha
- Use as Post emergence at 28-35 DAS, they effectively
control Isoproturon-resistant Phalaris minor in North-
western wheat belt of country. (Rana et al., 2016)
(E) Alternate herbicides-for control of
Isoproturon resistance Phalaris minor
18. Herbicide Recommended a. i.
kg/ha
Time of
Application

2. Trakoxydim 30-40 g/ha post-emergence
3 .Chlorsufuron 20-30 g/ha Post- emergence
25-30 DAS
19. Several weeds infest the wheat fields, compete with
wheat for moisture, light and nutrients, and
decrease the wheat productivity
Herbicide is most potential single tool toward weed
management if used judiciously on the prescribed
guideline.
Herbicides particularly pre-emergence ones control
weed right from the beginning of their germination
and thus prove to be more efficient than many other
methods of weed controle.
