world
FARMER AWARD PROBLEM
4. For successful engineering:
Technical expertise and
Professional skills.
While the power that drives an engineer's
successful design lies in technical expertise,
communicating the success of the engineering career
often depends on professional development in areas of
management, leadership training, communication, and
business.
Successful engineers will need to achieve
balanced excellence in both their technical and
professional development. Society membership
will help achieve this balance for engineers having
membership in their discipline's technical society
FRESH FISH PROBLEM
5. Life is all about connections, knowing the right people and
creating the right network
Have your own standards, stick to them and seek out those who
meet or exceed those standards.
Fail gloriously by your own high standards
Professional - technical societies are a major source for
networking,
If you show up, everyone knows who you are, so the
networking begins.

Having joined why should you stay and should you pursue
higher levels of recognition?
And finally, if your professional career moves on, do you either
change to a body that represents our new situation while
leaving the old society or keep the old one as well
as joining the new?
7. “Membership puts me in touch with a huge network of PEs
from within my specialty, all across the country."
“The profession is changing fast – almost literally by the

31. There is, of course, one final reason to belong and indeed
to participate in the activities of your professional society,
that is to support and work with the body that represents
the profession that gives you your income, sense of
identity and professional fulfillment, that represents the
profession to society as a whole and that maintains the
standards that govern how practitioners of your profession
conduct themselves in business, this for me is the one
reason above all to join, remain a member and where time
and opportunity afford, to contribute.
