2. Introduction
• Paddy, also called rice paddy, is grown on small, level, flooded fields
mainly cultivated in southern and eastern Asia.
• Rice straw is produced as a by product of rice production at harvest.
Rice straw is removed with the rice grains during harvest and it ends
up being piled or spread out in the field depending if it was harvested
manually or using machines.
• Globally, roughly 800 to 1,000 tons per hectare of rice straw is
produced, with about 600 to 800 tons per hectare produced in Asia
(600-800 tons/ha).
• Farmers are continuously burning paddy straw which cause air
pollution as well as degrades soil quality.
3. Mulching
• Spreading plant residue or any other material like straw on the soil surface.
Benefits :-
• Mulch practices are used to conserve soil moisture
• Increase the yield of crops
• Protect exposed soil or freshly seeded areas from erosion by eliminating direct
impact of precipitation
• Slowing overland flows and to foster the growth of vegetation by increasing
available moisture and act as shade.
• Increase the infiltration rate of the soil.
• Composting
4.
5. Incorporation
Mixing of crop residue partially and completely in the soil.
Benefits :-
a) Help to conserve soil nutrient
b) Improved soil aeration
c) Reduce weed growth
d) Reduce irrigation water requirements
e) Easier wet land preparation
Machine used in incorporation:-
MB plough, Happy Seeder,Rotavator

7. Energy generation from paddy straw
• Paddy straw can be used as an efficient fuel.
• Paddy straw has a calorific value of 3000 kcal/kg.
• One tonne of rice paddy produces 290 kg of paddy straw
which is capable of producing 100 kWh of power.
• Ways to paddy straw for energy generation :
• Combustion of densified paddy straw.
• Biogas Generation.
• Conversion to fuel.
10. Bailing
• Bailing is a process of compacting of paddy straw into compact bales.
• A baler is an implement which is used to compress a cut and raked
crop into compact bales that are easy to handle, transport, and store.
11. Types of Balers
• Round Baler:- It gives bales in round shape
• Rectangular Baler:-It gives rectangular bales
