Fisheries management of kaptai lake
Introduction:
Inland fisheries comprise about 80 percent of total fish production of the country.kaptai lake with
an area of 68,800 ha is one of the important waterbodies.A large quantity of fish produced every
Year from this lake.According to the Bangladesh Fisheries Development corporation total fish
production from kaptai lake was 4566 metric ton in 2002-2003 which is increased to 9589 metric
ton in 2015-2016.Over the last fifteen year fish catch from this lake has been increasing
steadily.The Bangladesh fisheries Research academy estimate that initially major carps
(rui,catla,mrigal,etc)dominated the catch-about 81 percent in 1965-66.
Basic feature of kaptai lake:
1.kaptai lake are the largest manmade freshwater body in Bangladesh.
2.It contribute to produce significant quantity of freshwater fishes,navigation,flood control and
agriculture,etc.
Morphotic and hydrographic features:
Surface elevation 31.1m,surface area 68,800 ha, volume 524,700m, max.depth 32m,outlet
depth15.5m,storage ratio0.31, reservoir type,primary in flows and out flow is in Karnaphuli
River and it's coordinates is 22: 29'45"N92:13'45"E.

Availability of fish from Kaptai lake:
The kaptai lake continues to serve as a good and important source of fish production.Commercial
exploitation of fish from kaptai lake started in 1965.From then considerable amount Of fish are
producing every year from this lake which is an important part of the total inland water catch.At
the start of commercial exploitation of fishes from kaptai lake, major carp were the dominant fish
species contributing 60% plus production from this lake.

Exotic fish in kaptai lake:
Some of the exotic fish those are found in kaptai lake are common carp (Cyprinus carpio),Silver
Carp (Hypothalmichthys molitrix), Grass carp (Ctenopharygodon idella), Nilotica (Oreochromis
niloticus), Tilapia (O.mossambicus)e.t.c
Management issues and constraints:
Fishing in the Kaptai reservoir was leased in 1963 for 99 years to BFDC,which has landing
station, ice plant and refrigeration facilities. Some of the fishing management of the kaptai lake
are given below:
Licensing and royalty payments:
Provision for licensing was initiated 1972 by BFDC,and gear licensing started in 1981.Only
licensed fishermen are allowed in the reservoir but when compliance was checked through a
survey, only29% of the fishermen had fishing licences.(Ahmed 1999)

Stocking:
Tripartite coordination between three main agencies, DoF ,BFRI and BFDC could initiate the
production of self-sustained fingerlings within or along the reservoir area there by avoiding the
transportation of fingerlings over long distance which entails various disadvantage.Stocking
management should also be aware of the inbreeding effect resulting from artificial
stocking.Stocking of hatchery reared and other non-native fish can dilute the gene pool
of the indigenous population if not managed properly.For example, hatchery-reared steelhead
trout (Salma gairdneri) were less successful in reproducing naturally than wild fish
Chilcoteetal,1986).Continuous monitoring and supervision of hatchery activities can ensure the
quality of fish seed.At least 20% of fingerlings should ideally come from natural sources, which
points towards the need to develop natural spawning grounds upstream of the reservoir.Keeping
the water at the optimum level during the spawning season would require strong iteragency
coordination between BFDC,BFRI, DoF and KHPS.In Cuba,a wel organized network Of fish
seed production centres caters for the stock requirements of all state-controlled reservoir
fisheries(Sugunan,1997).
Fishing craft and diversified fishing gear:
Two types of Fishing craft,the large country boat(10–12m length,1–2m breadth) and small
country boat(6–8m length, 0.7–1.2m breadth) are commonly found in the Kaptai reservoir.The
former is generally used for seine netting and operated by 5–10 fishermen,while the latter isused
for other fishing gear and operated by 1–2 fisher men.Occasionally,the tribal people use boats
made by hollow-ing out a large timber log.Some of fish net such as gill net,lift net, push net are

used.Others gear such as hook and line (long line, hand line, real line) fish trap (dughair, polo)
and woundling gear (konch,borsha,da) are used.
Problem associated with the management of kaptai lake:
At present kaptai lake is suffering from many problems.Fertilizers and pesticides used in lake
adjacent crop fields polluting lake water.Again, wayer level become reduced much than previous
years.People living around the lake depends on the water for drinking,cooking,washing and
breathing.Local fisherman also caught fish in this lake.To get more and sustainable production,
proper and scientific management system need to be introduced for this lake. Also government
and associated authorities should take immediate steps to make a good of existing problems of
the lake.
Recommendation:
The main reason behind declining of fish diversity in the Kaptai lake are reported to be due to
siltation, indiscriminate fishing, catching brood fish and fry during breeding season etc.Based on
the present finding,the following conclusion and recommendations can be made for overall
enhancement of fish biodiversity in kaptai lake.
1.Use of illegal fishing gears like current jal should be stopped.
2.Fish act should be implemented properly.
3.Jal mohal leasing system should be stopped.
Conclusion:
The kaptai lake play important role in the ecology, economy and livelihood of the country.It
also used to produce hydro-electricity in Bangladesh.It also improving the socio-economic
condition of fishermen.So we should concern about fish and fisheries resources of kaptai lake.
