VIRUSES
INFLUENZA A VIRUS
PARAINFLUENZA
RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS
ADENOVIRUS
SARS CORONAVIRUS
2. ⢠Introduction: First discovered in pigs by Richard Shope in 1931.
⢠Old Classification: Linear, segmented, enveloped spherical, single stranded RNA viruses.
⢠Baltimore Classification: Group V : Negative-sense single-stranded RNA or (-)ssRNA virus.
⢠Mode of Transmission: Direct contact with infected individuals, contact with contaminated
objects, inhalation of virus-laden aerosols
⢠Treatment:
(i) Resting in bed (ii) Drinking plenty of liquids
(iii) Taking mild pain killers to relieve pain (iv) Antiviral medication (zanamivir)
Prevention:
(i) Vaccinations (ii) Avoiding contaminated surface
(iii) Avoiding close contact with sick people (iv) Frequent hand washing
3. ⢠Introduction: First identified in humans in the late 1950s.
⢠Old Classification: Linear, non segmented, enveloped helical, single stranded RNA viruses.
⢠Baltimore Classification: Group V : Negative-sense single-stranded RNA or (-)ssRNA virus.
⢠Mode of Transmission: Spread by air (coughing and sneezing), touching infected objects or
surfaces.
⢠Treatment:
(i) Medications to relieve symptoms (fever, cough) (ii) Drinking plenty of liquids
(iii) Using a room humidifier or taking a hot shower (iv) Stay home and rest
Prevention:
(i) Frequent hand washing
(ii) Avoiding touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unclean hand
(iii) Avoiding close contact with infected people
(iv) Keeping objects and surfaces clean and disinfected
4. ⢠Introduction: Discovered in 1956, isolated and characterized by Robert Chanock and his
colleagues in 1963.
⢠Old Classification: Linear, non segmented, enveloped spherical, single stranded RNA viruses.
⢠Baltimore Classification: Group V : Negative-sense single-stranded RNA or (-)ssRNA virus.
⢠Mode of Transmission: Spread by infected personâs coughs, sneezes or a surface that has the
virus on it.
⢠Treatment:
(i) Over-the-counter medication to reduce fever (ii) Increase fluid intake
(iii) Inhaled form of an antiviral medicine (ribavirin)
Prevention:
(i) Frequent hand washing (ii) Avoiding contaminated
(iii) Avoid close contact with sick people surface
5. ⢠Introduction: First discovered in 1953 by Rowe and his colleagues.
⢠Old Classification: Linear, non-segmented, naked icosahedral, double stranded DNA viruses.
⢠Baltimore Classification: Group I : double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses.
⢠Mode of Transmission: Close personal contact such as touching or shaking hands, the air by
coughing and sneezing, touching an object or surface with adenoviruses on it, infected
personâs stool, water
⢠Treatment:
(i) Increase fluid intake
(iii) Require proper care to help relieve symptoms.
Prevention:
(i) Frequent hand washing (ii) Vaccine (only for U.S. military)
(iii) Avoiding close contact with sick people (iv) Avoiding touching eyes, nose, or
mouth with unclean hands
6. ⢠Introduction: First identified in 2003 by Carlo Urbani.
⢠Old Classification: Linear, non-segmented, enveloped helical, single stranded RNA viruses.
⢠Baltimore Classification: Group IV : positive-sense single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) viruses.
⢠Mode of Transmission: spread by infected personâs coughs, sneezes or a surface that has the
virus on it.
⢠Treatment:
(i) Medications to relieve symptoms such as fever and a cough.
(iii) Supportive care to help relieve symptoms.
Prevention:
(i) Frequent hand washing (ii) Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth
(iii) Covering the mouth and nose with tissue with unwashed hands
when coughing or sneezing
