3. The Stirling engine was invented and patented
by Robert Stirling in 1816.
The stirling engine is a reciprocating external
combustion engine because fuel burns outside
the engine itself and continuously.
The stirling engine is designed so that the
working gas is generally compressed in the
colder portion of the cylinder and expanded in
the hotter portion resulting in a net coversion
of heat into work.
4. 1. Two piston type or alpha stirling engine.
2. Piston displacer type or beta stirling engine.
3. Gamma Stirling engine.
Types of gases are used….
Air ,
hydrogen ,
helium ,
nitrogen or vapor.
9. Operate using any available heat source.
Simple design of an engine compare to other
reciprocating engine.
It can be operate at lower pressure and provides perfect
balancing.
Disadvantages:
It’s cooling system requires large amount of water.
Not self starting.
It has low power to weight ratio.
Difficult to vary the power output.
