1. „ Ich kann Ihnen nicht sagen, wie froh ich bin, wieder in Samarra zu sein. Das erste Aufblitzen der goldenen Kuppel habe ich begrüßt, wie kaum irgendein schiitischer Pilger. Ich fand in Samarra eine große Post von 36 Briefen vor …“ Ernst Herzfeld to Friedrich Sarre, June 30,1911

6. I should feel much assured in knowing that these things which constitute a great amount of work and may still become useful for studies were safely kept at a place like the Freer Gallery. Ernst Herzfeld to Freer Gallery Director Archibald Wenley, April 18, 1946
- successful conference and proceedings volume, organized by Ann Gunter and Stefan Hauser in May 2001, what can the papers and archives be of use, some may ask? The answer is A LOT. - For once, already while the proceedings were published quite a number of authors discovered new material. - Since then, new work has been done, most of all of course in the countries, in Samarra, Iraq, Iran and neighboring countries
The Archives come to the Freer Gallery: Herzfeld, Francis Henry Taylor (MET), who was bribed, since the MET had already paid $ 17,000; Ettinghausen and Wenley

Cataloging project to digitize and catalog Leon Levy foundation 5778 records, 2443 are Samarra
Talk about the coding used in the Ernst Herzfeld finds journal and how we can make all these connections in the catalog. Further explored in the youtube tutorial. For each object Herzfeld would assign an Inventory number. Whenever he drew, wrote about, or photographed that object he would meticulously document the inventory number on each one. Because we have identified that strategy we’ve been able to structure our catalog record to make the connections of one item among the various documents found in his papers. 12 objects pulled up with IN-874 Example: Wood fragment with ornamentation from the Palace of Caliph *Sketchbook, journal drawings, photographs, case listings, typological study, unpublished report AND most importantly the finds journal
The Finds Journal with In-874, details in the Finds Journals… The identified strategy in Herzfled’s inventory numbering and the in-depth cataloging we’ve done allows a search system that can build relationships between objects and the archives, and is a system that can be successful in implementing multiple disparate Herzfeld collections across the globe.
YouTube tutorial on how to use the Collections Search Center, using an Ernst Herzfeld Samarra query as an example that further demonstrates the connections we are able to make using Herzfeld’s inventory.
Ernst Herzfeld blog posts on the newly catalog and digitized sections, in addition to the Samarra 100 th Anniversary series for 2011. Briefly speak to visitation we’ve received via analytics to prove we’re reaching interested and invested audiences. Next post is July 13 th ! (Alleged Spy) Contributing articles are welcome!
