attracts five suitors seeking her hand in marriage, whom she turns
away by challenging each with an impossible task; she later attracts

Question 2
In an interview with a French Distributor Kana, mangaka X said the

difficult. Personally, I'm not really aware if it's good or not. It may seems
obvious, but I wanted to distance myself away from the cliche _____(5)
dressed in black on purpose.
I didn't see any point in using an image that has been used countless time
already. So I took the opposite direction. A little ______(6) guy with a
jumpsuit, and not even japanese. I wanted my character to be stateless,
like Akira Toriyama's characters. That was the basic idea.
(cont. on

Question 2
Then there are some particularities based on my personal obsessions,

ID the mangaka X or the animated series
Question 3
ID the anime referenced in the lyrics
Another one gone today
It happens all the time now
Nobody's surprised now
That they're dropping like they're flies now
You can run! You can hide!
You can lock yourself inside!
But there's nothing you can do
Once you have been identified!
Walking through the streets
Just like any one of us
Deliberately mundane
So as not to cause a fuss
On your trains, your streets, your roads
With you on the bus
Raining judgement not from above
But more like from next door
Watch out, you're being watched now
As you skulk along the street
There was once a time when
You controlled the end you'd meet
Depending on the mistakes
Etched into your yesterday
It's a matter of time
Till it's time for you to pay

aboriginal tribesman of Ainu. These fearless warriors were said to have
tamed bears and kept them as pets, a testament to their indomitable
spirit.

Anime Quiz 2023

  • 2. RULES ● This quiz has 20 questions ● Each question carries +10 for correct answer. There is no negative marking for wrong answers so feel free to guess. ● Part points will be applicable wherever possible. ● Tie breaker questions are marked with an asterisk (*). ● QM Discretion is finalised. ● All QMs have a Mangekyou so don’t try to be sneaky.
  • 4. Question 1 The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is considered the oldest surviving Monogatari. The story details the life of X, who is discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant. After she grows, her beauty attracts five suitors seeking her hand in marriage, whom she turns away by challenging each with an impossible task; she later attracts the affection of the Emperor of Japan. While this story has been referenced several times by many different anime/manga, Aka Akasaka's interpretation of the story was the reason why X (The characters share the same name) has a cold and cunning personality. ID X.
  • 5. Question 2 In an interview with a French Distributor Kana, mangaka X said the following: “The animators of the animated series ______ often praise me for my designs, because on how crazy they are, which makes my job even more difficult. Personally, I'm not really aware if it's good or not. It may seems obvious, but I wanted to distance myself away from the cliche _____(5) dressed in black on purpose. I didn't see any point in using an image that has been used countless time already. So I took the opposite direction. A little ______(6) guy with a jumpsuit, and not even japanese. I wanted my character to be stateless, like Akira Toriyama's characters. That was the basic idea. (cont. on next slide)
  • 6. Question 2 Then there are some particularities based on my personal obsessions, like zippers. I found it funny to use anachronism in this medieval like setting, like the sandals. I love drawing toes and feet. I must be a fetishist of toes and fingers. Okay, that came out weird, I admit.” ID the mangaka X or the animated series
  • 7. Question 3 ID the anime referenced in the lyrics Another one gone today It happens all the time now Nobody's surprised now That they're dropping like they're flies now You can run! You can hide! You can lock yourself inside! But there's nothing you can do Once you have been identified! Walking through the streets Just like any one of us Deliberately mundane So as not to cause a fuss On your trains, your streets, your roads With you on the bus Raining judgement not from above But more like from next door Watch out, you're being watched now As you skulk along the street There was once a time when You controlled the end you'd meet Depending on the mistakes Etched into your yesterday It's a matter of time Till it's time for you to pay
  • 8. Question 4 This iconic manga/anime character X drew inspiration from several notorious figures in history, including the infamous Henry Avery, who, following a highly successful attack on the Mughal vessel Ganj-i-Sawal, emerged as the wealthiest trader of his time. Despite evading the law, he vanished without a trace after the heist. However, the more evident inspiration is Olivier Levasseur, who, just before his _________(9), hurled a mysterious parchment inscribed with cryptic symbols into the crowd, claiming it contained the secret to a highly valuable item. I'd X.
  • 9. Question 5* Connect this non-exhaustive list: ● “You should see me in a crown” by Billie Eilish ● “One More Time” by Daft Punk ● “Levitating” by Dua Lipa ● “Shelter” by Porter Robinson & Madeon ● “Boss Up” by Tyga ● “Breaking the Habit” by Linkin Park ● “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran ● “Snowchild” by The Weeknd ● “Break the Ice” by Britney Spears
  • 10. Question 6 Although people may not believe it, a very popular anime X was inspired by a children's anime named Anpanman, which is one of the longest running anime of all time. The protagonist of Anpanman has a head made of bread. Though X was not made of bread, they both resembled each other a lot visually. Both had similar characteristics, strong single-___ and simple character design, and they both are silly and have an unparalleled strength. One would expect X to have based on a God, but taking inspiration from a piece of bread is so unexpected that its comical. Which anime are we talking about?
  • 11. Question 7 Researchers at Stanford and Penn found that in order for regions dedicated to a new category of objects to develop in the visual cortex , the part of the brain that processes what we see, then exposure to those objects must start young when the brain is particularly malleable. Therefore, in a recent study it was found that in adults who played a specific video game extensively as children, a particular area of the visual cortex lights up when they view characters from the original version. This part of the brain responds to different kinds of animals, cartoons and words which the player must have encountered in the great multitude of versions of the game. In order to win in the game, the player must know each of the characters capabilities and take reasonable decisions in respective to their characters development. ID the game.
  • 12. Question 8 In a classic seinen manga, the protagonist found himself facing a superhuman monster killer who seemed to possess unparalleled strength and skill. Despite being outmatched, the hero remained undaunted and drew inspiration from an ancient poem by Hakushu Kishihara, "Songs of The Old Ainu", which spoke of the legendary aboriginal tribesman of Ainu. These fearless warriors were said to have tamed bears and kept them as pets, a testament to their indomitable spirit. During their first duel, the hero recited these verses, but alas, he was defeated, and the manga's first series came to a close. (cont. on next slide)
  • 13. Question 8 However, the hero's determination did not falter, and he faced the monster once again, armed with the same ancient wisdom. This time, the hero emerged victorious, and his triumph set him on the path to becoming the world's new savior. In the third season of the anime, viewers witness this epic showdown and discovering the identities of these two legendary characters. I'd the anime and which characters are we talking about?
  • 14. Question 9 When X started to air in 2019, the producers of the anime had to change something in the main character’s design due to a controversy that arose in certain nearby Asian countries. The controversy was due to the fact that something in the main character’s design featured a symbol that would evoke memories of the traumatic events and war crimes committed by the Imperial Japanese military in World War II. ID the anime and the design choice.
  • 15. Question 10* Given below is a part of the lyric from “How to Eat life” by Eve. A backpacker, who is searching for something missing, flew into a rage yet again Even if I were to get hopeful over sudden happenings you wouldn't appear at all "_______ _______ ___” Reciting it just like a spell, but I'm still anxiously waiting for its return Yet again those emotions escaped me It isn't this, nor that This is just making me more impatient. (cont. on next slide)
