3. TEASER
X was a French bookseller and a scribe. He was once sold a rare manuscript. After
spending 24 years translating it, he and his wife were able to accomplish
transmutation, turning half a pound mercury first into silver, then into gold. He made
a projection of the red stone on same amount of mercury and as a result, the
transmutation took place.
From the middle ages, the red stone (Y) was the most sought after goal in the world
of the medieval ancestor of chemistry. The stone was believed to cause
transmutation and had healing properties. Some believe that the red stone may not
be a stone at all, but called so just due to virtue of it’s fixed nature.
Many unsuccessful attempts to find Y had been made until X claimed of having
discovered it. X might/might not have discovered Y, but it did make him immortal.
ID X (5) and Y (5).

Identify this king from the early modern period of modern history (which is roughly said to
be from the 1400s to around 1800 CE). The memes bring out some of his most infamous
actions, such as having multiple divorces, getting two of his wives beheaded and
separating his country from the Roman Catholic Church because the Pope didn’t allow
him to divorce his first wife.

The creator of this art installation was inspired to create this when she heard a
remark, “170,000 <REDACTED> are just a statistic”. She says that her 25 years of
experience has taught her that each <REDACTED> is valuable, no <REDACTED> is just
a statistic.
The first art installment was setup in Oct 2020 and featured 200,000+ white flags,
planted in an array. The creator also encouraged visitors to plant personalized white
flags.
Due to the emotional response that the first exhibit got, the artist set up the second
installment of her artwork recently, but this time, with almost 400,000 flags more
than the last exhibit.
What is the significance of the white flags in the art-installment ?

Find this one word term that is used in both medicine and athletics:
Use in medicine: an external device that is implanted in certain patients. It uses
electrical impulses to regulate the working of an organ of the body.
Use in athletics: a runner hired in track events to run at certain speeds in certain
stages of a middle or long distance race, before falling back or dropping out. Their
function is to serve as a reference for the athletes in the designated parts of the race
(usually in the beginning), as these events are highly strategy dependent. They are
most useful for athletes trying to break world records.

The bittersweet battle that ensued between two adjacent states in 2017 finally come
to an end in 2019 as Chennai-based Registry Office has recently issued a formal
certificate recognising the second state’s variant of a culinary dish.
In its submission before the registrar, the variant to which the formal certification
was issued was described as : “very soft to feel, juicy and non-chewy in consistency,
and can be swallowed without teeth pressure." The formal certification of the same
product to two states now recognizes two distinct varieties in texture and taste.
While one state alleges that the dish was ‘invented’ by a state cultural icon at his
residence, the other state cite a tradition dating back to 12th century of offering the
dish to their deity.

The Earthshot Prize, established by the Royal Foundation recently had its first event.
Created to tackle environment-related challenges, it “aims to turn the current pessimism
surrounding environmental issues into optimism, by highlighting the ability of human
ingenuity to bring about change, and inspiring collective action.”
It provides financial rewards and recognition to people/groups that come up with
innovative and effective solutions for the five ‘Earthshots’ : the restoration and protection
of nature; air cleanliness; ocean revival; waste-free living; and climate action. The vision is
to achieve these goals by 2030.
It has quite a few similarities (or comparisons that can be made) to another endeavour of
the previous century: the significance of technological creativity in the pursuit of the
target, a large commitment of financial resources, and declaring the intent to achieve a
specific goal by the end of that decade. In fact, the name Earthshot is derived from the
name given to that particular initiative X.
What is the name ‘Earthshot’ inspired from?

If you use youtube, there are high chances that you have
heard this name. This freemium mobile game was released in
2018. It has been praised for its graphics but criticized for its
aggressive microtransaction system.
The game has received substantial negative attention for its
extensive advertising campaign, most notably its
sponsorships of a number of YouTube and Twitch content
creators. This had led to it becoming an internet meme.
However, their marketing strategy has been pretty
successful, and they have generated nearly 50 million
downloads and more than 500 million dollars in revenue.

It started in late 2016 when a certain set of Americans in a country in the West Indies
started reporting some medicals symptoms for which the cause couldn’t be found.
Typically, the symptoms went like this: the victim would hear unexplained, strange and
irritating noises for anywhere between 20 seconds to 30 minutes. Those who didn’t hear
sounds instead felt pressure, vibrations or heat.
Many things about this phenomenon were weird. For those who heard sounds, covering
their ears made no difference to the sensation. Others in nearby rooms would not report
experiencing those sounds/symptoms at the same time. Victims experienced dizziness
and fatigue for months after the experience. Commonly referred to using its place of
origin, now this phenomenon has occurred with Americans in various countries across
the continents. It has been widely speculated that it is a human-made occurrence, and
that adversaries of the US are behind these attacks.

X is a genre of dance music that originated in Czech and is known well throughout
Europe and America. The dance emerged as a craze in mid 1800s and swept through
Europe. Such was the popularity that products were being marketed as X-related.
Maybe that’s why X shares its name with a fashion.
The fashion practice was not always considered cheerful. In medieval Europe, the
technology to create uniformly spaced X did not exist yet, hence the resulting
unevenly spaced product was reminiscent of fatal illness(es) rampant at that time.
Though any connection between the two (the dance and X) is not clear, it is thought
that the design element evokes the cheerful and light nature of the dance.

Development on this character began in 1993. Some of the initial design ideas
included a male character with a hat and a whip, but the similarity to Indiana Jones
made the developers look for more originality. The design team eventually settled on
a female character and gave her a British origin.
Over the course of various releases, her backstory has changed but the essence of
the character has remained the same: a highly intelligent and athletic English
archaeologist, the only daughter and heir of an aristocratic family who travels the
world and ventures into ancient tombs and hazardous ruins in search of forgotten
artifacts and locations. Some of her most important accessories include fingerless
gloves, a backpack, a utility belt with holsters on either side and most importantly,
twin pistols.

to look like a <REDACTED>. The picture is appropriately named X. The stellar corpse,
on the deep black background of the space appears to pop out of nothingness just
like a Supreme being wanting to convey his blessings.
The phrase X was also used by a footballer to describe a goal that he scored in one
of the World Cup matches. The player’s team ended up winning the match due to
that goal. But, according to the rules, the footballer should have been given a yellow
card and the goal should not have been considered.

What’s a better strategy to help reposition your brand than to come out with an
iconic advertisement?
And so did X. The purpose of this iconic advertisement was to change the perception
that X’s products are for children only. At a time when advertisements sold the
product with in-your-face approach, this commercial also had a revolutionary
impact as the ad barely had a few glimpses of the product.
27 years later, the advertisement has made a comeback but with an apt twist. The
new advertisement aims to recognize the women trailblazers and celebrate their
success stories.

In the 1920s, the world’s leading electric companies all realised that their light bulb sales
were under threat from the same cause: a certain property of their bulbs. Their annual
sales had dipped massively and if they continued to work the way they did, they believed
further decrease in sales would occur with time.
A secret meeting between the top executives of companies like Philips, General Electric,
Associated Electric and Osram among others took place. They decided to work together
to boost their sales by changing a property of their light bulbs. After implementing this,
they even had a system where they would check each other’s products to ensure they
were complying with the standard that the meeting had outlined. This method worked
and in the following years their sales increased again. Though this cartel didn’t effectively
survive for too long (about 15 years), the learnings from their tactics were heavily
employed by other industries as well.
What did they change in their bulbs to boost sales?
139. A43
They decreased the lifespan of their bulbs
from about 1500-2000 hours to 1000 hours.

August saw a sharp increase in number of people making trips to the hospitals for the
treatment of injuries sustained usually when one falls from height, like dislocated
shoulders, ACL tears and broken wrists. Several doctors and health workers have
voiced their opinions against the practice that caused this.
The practice has also lead to surge in people doing something to get the apparatus
required for it, which is a real issue in the dairy industry. This action is often attributed
to the dairy industry losing $80M a year.
What started off as a fad, was causing serious injuries and hence, to discourage
people from doing it, it had to be banned from a platform.
What practice are we talking about? What is the action that is causing losses to the
dairy industry? (5 each)

The first design of the insignia used to authenticate documents in USA went underway
shortly after the Independence Day declaration. Over time, the dye wore out and the
alternative iterations incorporated mistakes in them. At its 100th anniversary, the
government decided to correct the errors in the insignia and offered X a $1,000 dollar
contract for the same. In the corrected seal, the motifs remained the same, the design was
just made more dynamic. The design, till date features on $1 bill.
X is not exactly in designing business, but designing is an integral part of their business. X
first functioned as a “stationary and fancy goods store” before establishing itself as what it
is known today for - a symbol of striving aspiration, be it for love or a more lavish life.
X is synonymous with the light medium robin egg blue color. Breakfast at X should def be

This three-word phrase (having a repeated word) was originally used as the title for
several publications that list the notable and prominent people of society, usually by
country or by their field of work. The most popular of these is a publication in the UK
which lists the prominent people of the British society and has been published
annually since 1849.
This phrase has now become a part of common language, and is used widely by
newspapers, magazines, commentators etc. with a meaning quite similar to what the
publications carried, i.e. a reference to the best/greatest/most notable/most
well-known in any field.

This specific time of the year is dominated by the use of - X & Y. From advent calendars
to socks, X & Y can be seen everywhere. The reason behind this has its roots stretching as
far back as 13th century.
Rood screens, either richly painted in X and Y or carved, were common architectural
features of medieval churches. In those times, X was derived from iron and Y from
copper. These metals were associated with the planets Mars and Venus respectively.
Further the idea of duality was expressed through X and Y: male and female, war and love
etc.
However, out of the many combinations, the current popularity of the combination - X &
Y was cemented in Western culture by a beverage titan Z, when a new version of a
character was created wearing clothes that were X - matching Z’s logo.

The idea of allowing membership to “two

PRC and thus, PRC was seated in the U.N.
