Format of the Prelims
1. 25 questions
2. 1 Point each
3. 11 - 20 starred
1. Who is Sandrokottos?
In his 1st century CE work on Alexander, Greek biographer Plutarch wrote about
how Alexander had met Sandrokottos who would eventually defeat Agrammes or
Xandrames. Sanskrit scholar and linguist, William Jones, chanced upon the answer
to the identity of Sandrokottos when he came across a Sanskrit play Mudrarakshasa
by Vishakhadatta. Who is Sandrokottos?
2. Who are we talking about?
Basava Premanand was a rationalist and one time publisher of India Skeptic. Once
he famously filed a Civil Writ Petition in Andhra Pradesh High Court under Indian
Gold Control Act! He wanted the government to proceed against an individual for
materializing gold from __ __ because it was violative of Section 11 of the Gold
Control Act, which mandated the permission of the Gold Control Administrator for
manufacturing gold! Given the clout the individual had among all strata of Indian
society, it was not at all surprising that the case was dismissed by the court. Which
individual?
3. The name of the River.
Most of the rivers in India are revered and worshipped. On the contrary, X, which is a
tributary of sacred Yamuna, is believed to be cursed and its water is considered to be
Taamsik (filled with aggression or rage) which is believed to be the cause for violence
in the region according to the locals.
The legend is that the X area was part of Shakuni’s kingdom and the dice-game
played thereabouts. After the attempted disrobing of Draupadi she cursed anyone
who would drink the water of the Y (older name) river. Thus it is believed that the
curse by Draupadi has helped X to survive unpolluted by man and its many animal
inhabitants including the mugger and the gharial thrive relatively untouched. The X
remains one of India’s most pristine rivers.
4. Put funda.
Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool - by removing
themselves from it in the most spectacular way possible. In essence, people who
killed or maimed themselves because of their stupidity.
A Darwin award winning entry - “John Allen Chau, a self proclaimed world explorer
inspired by Livingston and Jesus, was killed by the ___ he was offering eternal life.
According to the BBC in Delhi, Chau bribed six fishermen to ferry him to the ___ so
he could offer the ___ gifts of scissors, a soccer ball, and Jesus.”
5. Fill in the blanks and common name.
Yama while instructing Nachiketa describes the eternal __ with its root upwards and branches
downwards, which is the pure immortal Brahman, in which all these worlds are situated, and
beyond which there is nothing else (Katha Upanishad Verse II.vi.1). But Krishna tells us that the
__ having neither end nor beginning nor stationariness whatsoever has its roots upwards and
branches downwards whose branches are nourished by the Gunas and whose infinite roots
spread in the form of action in the human world which though strong are to be cut off by the
forceful weapon of detachment to seek the celestial abode from which there is no return
(Bhagavad Gita Chapter XV Verses 1-4). The former teaches that the __ is real being identical
with Brahman and therefore impossible to cut-off; the latter insists that the __ must be
regarded as unreal being identical with existence which needs to be cut-off. For full points fill in
the blanks with the Sanskrit name which has its origins from the words for "tomorrow" and
"that which remains" (according to Adi Sankaracharya). Also, give me the common name
6. Put Funda.
For the purpose of creating the monolith, after a long search, a solid white granite
rock near Raigiri, Bhongir (then Nalgonda District) on a mountainside was found. For
over a year, hundreds of labourers helped the temple architect and builder
S.M.Ganapathi Sthapati create the monolith. The monolith stood at 58 feet (18 m)
and weighed 350 ton. For the transport of the monolith, the roads of the city were
widened and it was erected on a concrete platform. The first attempt at the final leg
of the transportation failed, with human casualties. After a 2 year salvage operation,
the monolith was "pulled out". The final installation happened in 1992 and a
consecration was done by the Dalai Lama in 2006. What am I talking about ?

8. What Activity?
Though illegal, the activity is a favourite of people living in the coastal region of
Andhra Pradesh, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Tulu Nadu region of
Karnataka, and the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Knockout matches to the death are
widely practised in Andhra Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, the winner is decided after three
or four rounds. The activity peaks around Makar Sankranti in coastal Andhra
Pradesh. The 'participants' in the activity get "a diet of almond, cashews and minced
meat, healthy exercise, and occasional injections of muscle-building hormones and
antibiotics". Traditionally, the 'participants' are categorised into categories like Dega
(eagle), Kaaki (crow), Pearl and Nemali (peacock). The Dega are said to be more
ferocious during noon hours, while the `peacock’ would fight down the rival in the
evening. What am I talking about ?
9. What has happened 313 times since 1925?
Although official figures are hard to get by, Goal.com reckons the number stands at
313 (as on 09-Apr-2017) with the first instance taking place on May 28, 1925. What
am I talking about?
Note - As of today, the number should stand at 323.
10. Excerpt from a TOI article. The movie?
“X has already got people talking about it. The director has now released an ad
saying the film needs two heroines. Earlier, he had invited applications from girls
between age 16 and 25, specifying that '' We don't need girls who don't know to
speak malayalam.'' They also added that they didn't want that kind of sophistication.
However, in the latest ad, it says that the makers are looking for girls aged between
15 to 22 and that " Both of them should know to speak Malayalam and English
fluently and should have a very good smile."”
*11. ID the town.
X is a town in Gurgaon. It is located 28 km (17.4 mi) from Gurgaon, at the foothills of
the Aravali hills. X was founded during the rule of Jalal-ud-din Khilji by a Mewati
chieftain. The town was given as reward to Faiz Talab Khan, a Pashtun of the Barech
tribe for aiding the Company against the Maratha Empire during the Second
Anglo-Maratha War. The X palace, also called Ibrahim Kothi, is given on the next
slide. Give me X, a town popular due to other mainstream reasons.
*12. The New Surname.
The original surname of the family had been Gorhe and had its origins in the village of
Katgun, in present day Satara District, Maharashtra. X's great-grandfather worked as a
chaugula, a lowly type of village servant, in that village but moved to Khanwadi in Pune
district. He prospered there but his only son, _1_, who was of poor intelligence,
subsequently squandered what had been gained. 1 moved himself and his family,
including three boys, to Poona in search of some form of income. The boys were taken
under the wing of a florist, who taught them his trade. Their proficiency in growing and
arranging became well known and they adopted the name of _2_ (flower-man) in place of
Gorhe. Their fulfilment of commissions from the Peshwa, Baji Rao II, for flower
mattresses and other goods for the rituals and ceremonies of the royal court so
impressed him that he granted them 35 acres (14 ha) of land on the basis of the inam
system, whereby no tax would be payable upon it.
*13. Painting Series and Painter.
Completed in 1946, X is considered Y’s magnum opus. Spread across 17 canvases, Y
created this masterpiece series in Kalighat pata style with natural colors, using
earth, chalk powder and vegetable colors instead of dyes. Later, Y also created
individual replicas capturing various moments from the entire series. Some of these
paintings have been preserved in the National Art Gallery of India and are also in
display in the Victoria Memorial Hall. All his 17 canvases are frequently
characterized by decorative flowers, landscape, birds and animals typical of the
Bengal School of Art. His lines are simple, bold and roundish initially derived from
clay images but they lead to complex moments rendering subtle yet powerful
emotions.
*14. Identify the temple.
The administration and day-to-day affairs of the X temple has for centuries been in
the hands of the Bordeuri Samaj, comprising five main families of priests. In 1998, a
rival group comprising individuals from the families of the priests, as well as
representatives of sections who have traditionally not had a role in running the
temple, formed the X Debuttar Board, which took over the rights and privileges of
the Bordeuri Samaj. It was formed as an opposition to the undemocratic selection of
the head priest but itself came under scrutiny. In 2015, an SC a Bench comprising
Justices Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla and Shiva Kirti Singh rejected the claims
of the Board and restored the traditional rights of the Bordeuri Samaj.
Which temple?
*15. Identify the two towns.
X is a city and a notified area in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Located near the
Bengal border, people here speak Hindi,Santali and Bengali languages. The district is
also home to the block Karmatar where Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar lived for 18
years, taught girls in a thatched school, and distributed medicines from a home clinic.
Some of the articles used by him are still lying here but the place, which should have
been a tourist destination, does not get any visitors these days.
Y is a district in Uttar Pradesh, India, roughly 650 km from both Delhi and Kolkata,
almost 84 km from Allahabad and 59 km from Varanasi. It is known for its carpets
and brassware industries. The city is surrounded by several hills and is famous for
the holy shrine of Vindhyachal, Ashtbhuja and Kali khoh.
*16. Name X.
Named after a river in Myanmar where her father was working for the Burma
Cotton Company, X was an anthropologist, sociologist, educationist and writer. She
studied at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and
Eugenics; was awarded a doctorate two years later; and then returned to her
husband in India, where the couple lived a rather unconventional life less bound by
the social strictures that were common at that time. X was the first Indian female
anthropologist, a discipline that in India during her lifetime was generally
synonymous with sociology. She had wide-ranging academic interests, including
anthropology, anthropometry, serology, Indology and palaeontology as well as
collecting folk songs and translating feminist poetry.
*17. Fill in the blank
She (photo next slide) appeared, on the platform of New Delhi’s train station in the early 1970s,
seemingly from nowhere, announcing herself as Wilayat, Begum of ____. Along with a son, a daughter,
some Nepali servants and some Great Danes, she laid camp there and refused to leave.
Government officials scrambled to find her somewhere to live. She was attracting attention from the
media, and officials feared the Shiite population in a nearby city, which had been the capital of the
kingdom she claimed to be Begum of, could explode into civil unrest if they believed she was being
abused.
“India Princess Reigns in Rail Station,” a Times correspondent wrote in 1981. In 1984, her efforts paid
off. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi accepted their claim, granting them use of a 14th century hunting
lodge known as Malcha Mahal. They left the train station roughly a decade after they first appeared
there. Wilayat never appeared in public again.
*18. Name the Breed.
The X is an American breed of zebuine __. It was bred in the United States from 1885
from __ originating in India, imported at various times from the United Kingdom,
from India and from Brazil; these included Gir, Guzerá, Indu-Brasil and Ongole stock.
The X has a high tolerance of heat, sunlight and humidity, and good resistance to
parasites. It has been exported to many countries, particularly in the tropics; in
Australia it is the most numerous breed of __. It has been used in the creation of
numerous taurine-indicine hybrids. What is X?
*19. The people on
the left and right.
In the centre are of course Homi
Bhabha and JRD Tata.
*20. Put funda and name the person.
“They were all very crafty,” he said. “Some would hand out money, others held fake
weddings to entertain villagers with food and liquor, or handed out mobile phones,
or SUVs, or saris, or jobs, or almost anything you can think of.” His autobiography
included a compendium of forty or so methods, from cash funneled through village
headmen, to gifts of solar lamps, narcotics, cows, or manure.
Ways of what? Who is the he being referred to?
21. Identify the brand.
The ‘amazing mix of caramel, milk and butter’ — as described by its tagline — present
in X when blended with the bowler’s saliva would then aid the pacers in maintaining
the shine on the ball for a lot longer once he got down to applying the ‘paste’ on it.
And its thickness would also make the ‘shiny side’ heavier also helping him in his
quest for reverse swing. It was their eureka moment. “Energy ka energy, sugar ka
sugar, aur ball bhi ban gaya,” says a player who was part of the ‘search team’.
The search team was looking for a candy that would help reverse swing the ball
earlier than it would in the course of play. Which candy won?
22. What is X?
X is an Indian language spoken by the X Muslim communities mainly of Karnataka
(Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts) and some parts of North Kerala. The X
speak a language made of Malayalam idioms with Tulu phonology and grammar. Due
to the intensive influence of Tulu for centuries, it is today considered close to both
Tulu and Malayalam. The first film made in the language, also titled X, won the
National Award for the best film in 2011. Give me X.
23. Which Award? Which Sport?
Captains Homi Motivala and Pushpendra Kumar Garg represented India in a certain
team sport in which they won the bronze at the Asian Games in 1990 and 1994.
Their performances resulted in their being the first duo to win a certain award. The
award and the sport.
24. Name.
Words from whose autobiography, “Goal”:

A. 2 part name of a place
While the origins of the names of A (2 part name) are disputed, a common theory is
that the first part is derived from the Malay name for Lord Hanuman and the second
is derived from the corruption of a South Indian name for Land of the Naked.
B. Colloquial Term for A
The term B has been used to refer to A colloquially, or rather to something situated
in A. While it is variously thought to be a corruption of a property of the
geographical feature that needs to be crossed for reaching A or the colours of the
said geographic feature, one interesting theory is also that it refers to the loss of
caste that a high caste person would face because of crossing it.
C. Who did Sher Ali Murder
One of the residents of these places was a certain Sher Ali Afridi. He served the
British in Ambala in a cavalry regiment. He served in the Presidency armies, (that is,
serving the East India Company) in Rohilkhand and Oudh during the Indian
Rebellion of 1857. By a quirk of fate, he ended up at A. When C was visiting A in
1872, he was murdered by Sher Ali. Sher Ali was hanged for this offence.
D. Identify the
Institution C
While C in his capacity is

things, one of his lasting
legacies can be said to

E. Name the Actor

the British Rule and there was fear the country would soon go communist. The crew was
specifically chosen for the flight and the inside conditions of the aircraft were modified to help
transport something. Incidentally, this is perhaps the only recorded incident of the said thing
being transported in an aeroplane. Upon landing, the regular ground staff wasn't allowed near
the plane and another special "team" was brought in. Finally, upon landing in Bombay, the thing
was carried to Lonavala and the whole Bombay-Lonavala road was sealed from general public.

  • 12. 1. Who is Sandrokottos? In his 1st century CE work on Alexander, Greek biographer Plutarch wrote about how Alexander had met Sandrokottos who would eventually defeat Agrammes or Xandrames. Sanskrit scholar and linguist, William Jones, chanced upon the answer to the identity of Sandrokottos when he came across a Sanskrit play Mudrarakshasa by Vishakhadatta. Who is Sandrokottos?
  • 13. 2. Who are we talking about? Basava Premanand was a rationalist and one time publisher of India Skeptic. Once he famously filed a Civil Writ Petition in Andhra Pradesh High Court under Indian Gold Control Act! He wanted the government to proceed against an individual for materializing gold from __ __ because it was violative of Section 11 of the Gold Control Act, which mandated the permission of the Gold Control Administrator for manufacturing gold! Given the clout the individual had among all strata of Indian society, it was not at all surprising that the case was dismissed by the court. Which individual?
  • 14. 3. The name of the River. Most of the rivers in India are revered and worshipped. On the contrary, X, which is a tributary of sacred Yamuna, is believed to be cursed and its water is considered to be Taamsik (filled with aggression or rage) which is believed to be the cause for violence in the region according to the locals. The legend is that the X area was part of Shakuni’s kingdom and the dice-game played thereabouts. After the attempted disrobing of Draupadi she cursed anyone who would drink the water of the Y (older name) river. Thus it is believed that the curse by Draupadi has helped X to survive unpolluted by man and its many animal inhabitants including the mugger and the gharial thrive relatively untouched. The X remains one of India’s most pristine rivers.
  • 15. 4. Put funda. Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool - by removing themselves from it in the most spectacular way possible. In essence, people who killed or maimed themselves because of their stupidity. A Darwin award winning entry - “John Allen Chau, a self proclaimed world explorer inspired by Livingston and Jesus, was killed by the ___ he was offering eternal life. According to the BBC in Delhi, Chau bribed six fishermen to ferry him to the ___ so he could offer the ___ gifts of scissors, a soccer ball, and Jesus.”
  • 16. 5. Fill in the blanks and common name. Yama while instructing Nachiketa describes the eternal __ with its root upwards and branches downwards, which is the pure immortal Brahman, in which all these worlds are situated, and beyond which there is nothing else (Katha Upanishad Verse II.vi.1). But Krishna tells us that the __ having neither end nor beginning nor stationariness whatsoever has its roots upwards and branches downwards whose branches are nourished by the Gunas and whose infinite roots spread in the form of action in the human world which though strong are to be cut off by the forceful weapon of detachment to seek the celestial abode from which there is no return (Bhagavad Gita Chapter XV Verses 1-4). The former teaches that the __ is real being identical with Brahman and therefore impossible to cut-off; the latter insists that the __ must be regarded as unreal being identical with existence which needs to be cut-off. For full points fill in the blanks with the Sanskrit name which has its origins from the words for "tomorrow" and "that which remains" (according to Adi Sankaracharya). Also, give me the common name
  • 17. 6. Put Funda. For the purpose of creating the monolith, after a long search, a solid white granite rock near Raigiri, Bhongir (then Nalgonda District) on a mountainside was found. For over a year, hundreds of labourers helped the temple architect and builder S.M.Ganapathi Sthapati create the monolith. The monolith stood at 58 feet (18 m) and weighed 350 ton. For the transport of the monolith, the roads of the city were widened and it was erected on a concrete platform. The first attempt at the final leg of the transportation failed, with human casualties. After a 2 year salvage operation, the monolith was "pulled out". The final installation happened in 1992 and a consecration was done by the Dalai Lama in 2006. What am I talking about ?
