INTRODUCTION TO THESIS
WRITING
 Thesis writing is an
important part of every
academic undertaking. In
partial fulfillment of graduation
requirements, every student
submits an original research
paper that presents an
intellectual proposition.
 Students, therefore, need to
learn the essentials in writing
a thesis, which include topic
selection, drafting a thesis
statement, and writing every
part of the thesis.
PARTS OF A THESIS PAPER
The thesis consists of various
parts:
 Title Page
 Acknowledgement
 Table of Contents
 Abstract
 Introduction
 Literature Review
 Methodology
 Results
 Discussion
 Conclusion
 References/Bibliography
 Appendices
Remember:
Each part must be carefully
thought of and crafted.
1. The Title Page
 It may not seem crucial but the title
of a thesis is a very important part of
an academic writing.
 It must contain the very essence of
the study in a short and interesting
way.
2. The Abstract
 In one or two paragraphs with around
400 words, the abstract must state the
summary of the thesis.
 It must be written in just one page,
single space
 The introduction of a thesis must
showcase the questions that the
thesis aims to answer or the topics
that the thesis aims to explore.
 The introduction should contain ideas
that will make the readers want to
finish reading the entire thesis.
 In general, it should include the
objectives of the study, background
information on the area being
tackled, scope of work, and
acknowledgment of previous studies.
3. The Introduction
 The student must include a
comprehensive description of the
literature related to the thesis’ area of
study. This gives the student and the
readers of the thesis an overview of the
field being explored.
4. The Review of Related
Literature/Studies
5. The Methodology
 A clear methodology gives a complete
account of the procedures, materials,
and theories used in the study.
 This section may also mention the
calculations and techniques used to
verify results.
 It should also mention the range of
the study, including the limitations and
postulations.
7. The Discussion
 The results show the authentic
declaration of the outcome of the study.
 It must contain the range of variation and
the statistics used.
 For a better presentation, it is ideal to
show the results in graphical or tabular
form.
 This section must be a mere statement
of observations, not interpretation of
results.
6. The Results
 The discussion must show an in-
depth exploration of the topic being
studied.
 Some major points of this section
should be the patterns in the
results, causes of the
results, interpretation of the
results, evidences supporting the
interpretations and the importance of
the findings.
7. The Conclusion
 The conclusion of a thesis must state
the most salient points that can be
derived from the results of the study.
 It must state the implications of the
results and recommendations
 Citing the ideas of others is very
important in writing a thesis.
 The reference list must include all the
references used in the thesis.
 It must mention the title of work,
authors, year of publication and other
important details.
7. The Reference/Bibliography
Six Helpful Tips
for Thesis Writing
To read the full article:
http://questwriting.com/six-helpful-tips-
for-thesis-writing/
1. The first tip is to always have
a clear goal and determine
what kind of paper you
intend to write. This is the
formulation phase of your
topic.
2. The second tip is very
important because before
you can actually begin
writing, you have to organize
your data first.
3. The third tip is to try making
simple daily targets. Start by
targeting to write 500 words
per day and gradually
increasing each word count
(1000, 1500 etc.) As you
progress daily.
4. The fourth tip is to set realistic
deadlines for each chapter. Ask
yourself if the deadline you have
set is impossible or not and if it is
difficult to accomplish or not.
5. The fifth tip is to think about what
approach you will use to gather
data whether it is qualitative data
gathering or quantitative.
Visualize how you will gather
your data. Will use surveys?
Experiments? Or secondary
data?
6. The sixth tip is to reward
yourself. Sometimes we tend to
focus on the work too much that
we forget that it is also important
to treat ourselves right for every
accomplishment.
PART 2: THESIS
PROPOSAL
Definition of Thesis Proposal
Tips in Writing A Thesis Proposal
Read the full article:
http://questwriting.com/thesis-proposal-
the-first-step-in-thesis-writing/
WHAT IS A THESIS PROPOSAL?
 A Thesis proposal is where
you propose your thesis.
 In order to understand how
to propose a thesis, you
should be able to remember
what the point of a proposal
is:
 It is merely to propose a topic
to a committee in order to gain
their approval that your thesis
is actually feasible.
 The thesis proposal serves
as the foundation of how
your dissertation will be
evaluated which is why you
must be careful about your
proposal.
TIPS IN WRITING YOUR
THESIS PROPOSAL
The first credibility to propose your
thesis is to remember that the first
sentence written in the proposal
should be your thesis statement.
Remember: It should be clear
and precise and should tightly
scope your claim.
The next step is to present a
description of how to know if the
proposition is valid and feasible.
The next is to provide conclusion
which summarizes your thesis
including the truths about it, why it is
feasible and how it would contribute
and expand current knowledge in the
topic.
It is important to be
clear about the structure of the
proposal. The structure of the thesis
proposal should have:
 a title page,
 an abstract,
 table of contents,
 the introduction,
 the thesis statement,
 the methodology
 and the implications of the research.
Remember:
Each chapter should flow logically
with the previous one, transitions
should be included in major topics
and the headings and subheadings
must be consistent.

THESIS STATEMENT
1. Definition of Thesis
Statement
2. How to write a strong
thesis statement?
To Read the Full Article:
http://questwriting.com/how-to-write-a-
strong-thesis-statement/
THESIS STATEMENT: DEFINITION
 The thesis statement is a
powerful statement that
convinces an audience that
the topic is interesting and
that it provides a logical
point of view of the issue
you are concerned about.
 Thesis statements are not
merely statements of fact,
but they are statements that
should make a claim or an
argument.
 It should appear at the end of the
first paragraph of the paper. It
should follow that as the audience
reads the rest of the paper, they
will find that the evidences and the
logic presented leads back to the
thesis statement.
 Since it is the road map for the
paper, a thesis statement serves as
the interpretation of a question
which means it has to be able to
understand and explore the core of
an issue.
HOW TO WRITE A STRONG
THESIS STATEMENT?
1. The statement should be specific
and should encompass what you
will discuss in your dissertation
wherein facts and evidences serve
as support.
Remember:
The thesis should be limited to
what can actually be
accomplished in the specified
number of pages so the topic
should provide the audience with
the meat of the topic.
2. Thesis statements may be
revised from time to time
because as you write, you will
realize that your topic has
changed. It is okay to refine it
as arguments will also be
revised.
Remember:
 It is important to remember though
that no matter how much has
changed, the thesis should remain
specific.
 Sooner, each revision will help you
make a better sense of where the
argument is leading you to.
3. It is also important that the
thesis statement is clear and
will allow you to specify how the
hypothesis will be answered.
 It should not contain vague words
and should have a clear
hypothesis as well.
 The thesis should also be a
contribution if in case the findings
of your research do not support
your hypothesis.
