This city was founded as Mayarashtra by Maya, father of
Mandodari, Ravana's wife in the Ramayana. It was the
capital of Maya, thus the city is also known as 'Ravan Ki
Sasural' literally meaning Ravana's wife's home.
In the Ramayana, Shravan Kumar carried his feeble parents
on his shoulders to all the pilgrimage sites in India, but it is
believed that when he passed through this city, he put
down his parents for a while to get rest and water. It was
here that Lord Rama's father, King Dasharatha, mistook
Shravan Kumar for a deer and shot him with an arrow by
accident. Shravan Kumar's parents declared that the king's
own first son would abandon him when he needed him the
most. Which place?
9. Q2.
• X (11 October 1900, Karachi, British India – 24 May
1961, Delhi, India) was an Indian cricket administrator and one of

• The BCCI had it origins in a meeting in February 1927 at the
Roshanara Club in Delhi between Arthur Gilligan, the captain of the
visiting MCC team, X, Grant Govan and the Maharaja of Patiala. X's
cricket career as a medium pace bowler was rather inconspicuous.
• Duleepsinhji once dismissed him as one 'who thinks he is a bowler
but has never found anyone to agree with him on that point'.
• His greatest success as a bowler came for a Rest of India team
against the Vizzy XI in 1930-31 where took the wickets of Jack

the Indian team in 2011 but his initiative was turned down by
the AIFF because of his dual citizenship.Y could have played for
India as per FIFA statutes but a Delhi high court ruling that only
players with Indian passports could represent the country killed
off his chances.Y holds a UK passport.
• Identify X & Y.
15. Q4.
Who is talking about whom?
"It was like meeting an old friend, or better still, a mother after a
long separation. His gentle face put me at ease in a moment. He
simply 'took me in hand', and began to fashion me. He was
concerned about how I spoke, dressed, walked and ate. My mother
was not more solicitous about me than him. There was, so far as I
am aware, no reserve between us. It was really a case of love at first
sight, and it stood the severest strain in 1913. He seemed to be all I
wanted as a political worker—pure as crystal, gentle as a lamb,
brave as a lion and chivalrous to a fault. It does not matter to me
that he may not have been any of these things. It was enough for
me, that I could discover no fault in him to cavil at. He was and
remains to me the most perfect man on the political field. Not,
therefore, that we had no political differences. We differed even in
1901 in our views on social customs, e.g. widow re-marriage. We
discovered differences in our estimate of Western civilization. He
frankly differed from me in my extreme views on non-violence. But
these differences mattered neither to him nor to me. Nothing could
put us as under. It were blasphemous to conjecture what would
have happened if he were alive today. I know that I would have
been working under him."
18. Q5.
• In 1996, X joined the Leh Nutrition Project, a non-governmental
organisation, as project manager for watershed development. X
noticed a small stream had frozen solid under the shade of a group
of poplar trees, though it flowed freely elsewhere in his yard. He
realized that the reason for this phenomenon: the flowing water
was moving too quickly to freeze, while the sluggish trickle of water
beneath the trees was slow enough to freeze. Based on this, he
created artificial glaciers by diverting the river in to a valley, slowing
the stream by constructing checks. The artificial glaciers increase
the ground water recharge, rejuvenating the spring water and
providing water for irrigation. He constructed them at lower
elevations, so that they melt earlier, expanding the growing season.
By 2012, X had built 12 artificial glaciers. X's largest glacier is the
one at the Phuktsey village. It is 1,000 ft long, 150 ft wide and 4 ft in
depth. It can supply water for the entire village of 700 people and
cost Rs 90,000 to make.
For his feats, he has been nicknamed "Ice man" of India. ID X.
