2. What is the Present Progressive
• Present Continuous vs. Present Progressive
• Describes ongoing actions taking place in present time (Ruday 2013, p.75)
• BE + verb + -ing
• Contractions of BE are still connected to present progressive
• By definition the present progressive is a auxiliary verb because it relies on the verb forms
of BE to convey meaning.
• Ex.
He walking
They walking
3. More Information
• Common core language standard 4.1
• “Form and use the progressive verb tense…[and] show command of the
conventions of speaking and writing” (Ruday 2013, p. 73)
• Students can indicate continuous actions in their writing and speaking. Also,
it allows for more vivid story telling.
4. Examples
Examples:
He + BE (is) + verb (walk)+ -ing = He is walking
He+ is+ walk+ -ing = He’s walking
They+ BE (are) + verb (walk) + -ing = They are walking
They + are+ walk + -ing = They’re walking
5. Other progressive/continuous forms
• Future progressive: An continuous action that will happen in the future
Ex. He will be walking, They will be walking, He’ll be walking, They’ll be
walking
• Be does not change form in the future progressive
Subject (He)+ will+ be+ verb+ -ing = Future progressive
6. Other progressive/continuous forms
• Past Progressive- An action that occurred continuously in the past
- According to Ruday the action also occurs at the same time as something else (2013, p. 74)
• Also, the past progressive does not contract
- Ex
Singular: subject (He) + was+ verb+ -ing = past singular progressive
-He was walking
Plural: subject (They) + were+ verb + -ing = past plural progressive
They were walking
