The document describes an urban design project for the Chongqing Steel Factory Precinct. It provides background on the original steel factory site and the government's plan to redevelop the area. The proposal aims to provide economic, spatial and cultural development through strategies such as repositioning industry, establishing sustainable living and work areas, preserving industrial heritage, revitalizing the riverfront, and harmonizing with the local context. The design process required solving technical and social issues while anticipating new problems from the strategies. It was one of the most challenging projects the designer has managed.
2. Chongqing Steel Factory Precinct Urban Design
The original Chongqing Steel Factory developed based on the first iron Client: Chongqing City Planning Bureau
factory of China built up in 1893. It occupied a land of 5.43 km2 in area and
Location: Dadukou District, Chongqing
a 7.5km riverfront of the Yangzi River. In order to upgrade the city functions
and living quality, the government decided to implement a development Design time: 2008
strategy of moving out the heavy industry from the urban area and regen-
erating the land with new industrial system.
Our proposal is objective to provide a generator for the economic, spatial
and cultural development of the city. We have done a comprehensive analy-
sis of the existing context on aspects of geographic and economy-strategic
location, topography, transportation, history and culture resources, water-
front conditions, and social consideration, and a broad research about the-
matic topics, such as successful regeneration of industrial cities in Europe,
waterfront development, etc. Base on series of conclusion, we are devoted
to propose the strategies and conceptual design from five key points:
* Reposition the industrial structure and land use
* Establish an ecologic and effective living-work system for the sustainable
development
* Reserve the industrial heritage and enforce the identity as an industrial-
cultural precinct of the city
* Revitalize the riverfront life style
* Harmony with the local natural and social context
During the design process, we were also needed to solve many existing
technical difficulties and social problems, meanwhile, we try to anticipate
and avoid the new problem coming because of any inappropriate strategy.
In general, this is one of the most challengeable projects I managed as proj-
ect leader, and I enjoyed the whole process as one of the designers as well.
9. Yongxin International Plaza
Client: Qingdao Haiwo property development Co., Ltd.
Location: Qingdao, Shangdong Province
Site area: 3ha; Building area: 266,000 m2
Layers: three towers of 38 floors, 4 floors podium, and 4
basements
Design time: 2008-2009; under construction
Located in the heart of the new Qingdao Laoshan Central Business District,
YongXin International Plaza is a mixed-use development that includes
residential, office and retail components. This landmark project is currently
under construction and sits directly across from the new Qingdao Opera
House and adjacent to one of five new public squares in the area.
The site has a very prominent and high-profile central location adjacent to
the new Qingdao Opera House. It affords picturesque views in all directions,
with views of the striking Qingdao Laoshan Mountain range to the north
and east, while to the south and west is the open sea.
10. Evian New Town
Client: China Merchants Property Development Co., Ltd
Location: Foshan, Guangdong Province
Site area: 26.6ha; Building area: 459,400 m2
Design time: 2007-2008; Phase I completed in 2010
This is a high-end living community project located in the new develop-
ment precinct of Foshan. Diverse residences and several service public
buildings are planned in four blocks according to the micro-analysis of the
land value, living circulation and the strategy of maximizing the river view
and its environmental contribution. In architecture design, we followed
several design principles as below:
* Hierarchy of living space; Public- semi-public- private/ Plaza- Street- Court-
yard or terrace
* Priority of passive eco-design; natural light, air and reasonable orientation
* Sustainable energy system; solar panel, rain collection, grey water recycle,
etc.
* Form shall express the local culture and branding identity of the client
Conceptual Design
12. Bamboo School
Client: The Schools for Yunnan Foundation
Location: Bangxie Village in Lincang prefecture, Yunnan
Design time: 2003; Completed in 2008
This is a charity design project cooperated with the Foundation and the
local Bulang people. While some ethnic minorities in the distant villages of
Yunnan, most notably the Dai of Xishuangbanna, are experiencing some
economic and cultural resurgence, the lands most immediate to this site
remain impoverished. In 2003, I and another colleague, we arrived at the
village at first time and lived there a week for looking for the suitable con-
struction site and did the survey with very basic tools.
The school has 2200 m2. The space was not only designed for the students
to study and play, it´s also the meeting point and activity center for all the
villagers. The plan idea came from the honeycomb because Bulang people
believe bees led them to their homes in the mountain and regard them as
mascots; and the bamboo, as one of the abundant local resources in Yun-
nan, was used as a main building material, but for consideration of the land
condition, earthquake issue, and Chinese construction regulation, finally
the structure system had to be the concrete frame.
From this project, we try to create an inspirational model of further large-
scale school in the poorest areas of Yunnan, and spark the imagination and
the possibilities for what the future might hold for the local people.
14. Canal Commercial Street
Client: Sliver City Commercial Chain Estate Development
Co., Ltd.
Location: Dongying, Shandong Province
Design time: 2005
Different from the conventional introverted shopping and commercial
experience, where the mall and the stores have no much relationship with
surrounding context, outdoors and fresh air, part of the underlying man-
date for the Canal Commercial is the notion of ¨turning the mall inside-out¨,
as such, they will contribute substantially to the overall identity of the
development, and by the following design strategies, we tried to promote
a dynamic and rich building vocabulary and urban village shopping experi-
ence:
* Auto vs. Pedestrian Scale
* Commercial streetwall architecture
* Identity from various forms of transparency
* Spatial ¨Erosion¨ of primary form
* Interactive skin & signage
* Heterogeneous massing and expression
* Building as adaptable armature
15. City Square Urban Design
Client: Tianjin City River Economic Development Office
Location: Meeting Bridge of Tianjin
Design time: 2004
This is an urban design competition, we won the first award. The Meeting
Bridge was built in the late of nineteen century, which is one of the earliest
steel structure bridges in China. On the west bank, there´s local style tradi-
tional residential communities and bazaar; and on the east bank, there used
to be the Austria section and still remain some buildings of European style.
The bridge also has a special memorial value because in 1949 it was the
meeting point of two groups of communist army after they defeated their
respective enemies; this event was the symbol of the end of the civil war.
So that the reflection of the history and the sustainable development of
local traditional life style became the core inspiration. We responded to the
surrounding context by infusing different new functions into the spaces
on both side of the bridge, the west part will be transformed to a street
mall where could emerge a dynamic life style for the citizens; meanwhile,
the east part will stimulate the reflection in a peaceful environment by a
cultural building merged into the landscape; and the connection of bridge
would provide a convenient path for the transition between these two dif-
ferent spatial experiences.
16. Auxiliary buildings of the Calamus River Garden
Client: East City District Government Before 2002, on the right of the Forbidden City was still a shanty cluster, which was built in 1950´s, and the Calamus River was dirty and fully covered by
weeds. The Government decided to change this poor situation by building up a new city park with various life style auxiliary buildings.
Location: East side of the Forbidden City, Beijing
Design time: 2002; completed in 2003 In the masterplan, we tried to reestablish the traditional contexture in this historic area; courtyard concept was applied in a more flexible way to correspond
to the modern functions; for the architectural design, we combined some most traditional decoration details and new elements such as more transparent
and constructionist interface inside of the yard on the façade to express a new Chinese aesthetics, meanwhile, the whole structure is actually steel frame
with concrete basement to save the wood resources and facilitate the construction.
The whole project included an art museum, an opera theater, a Chinese restaurant, a west restaurant and bar, the total area is 13,400m2.
19. Bodega Langes
In 2000, SWAROVSKI Family planned to construct a bodega in China for Client: SWAROVSKI Family, Austria
sharing the cultural vision of his brand from a fresh way. They hoped to
Location: Changli, Qinhuangdao
produce the best wine of the world, promote the ecological tourism and
professional training of viniculture in China. Design time: 2000 - 2001
Completed in 2003
My proposal won the first award of this international design competition
and I was assigned to be the design leader of this project according to the
pact between the client and my company. I worked in this project from the
inception to the completion with both conceptual and technical design,
and the supervision for the construction by coordinating with diverse de-
sign and construction professionals.
The project includes a winery (14500m2), a private villa (3000m2), a recep-
tion center (5000m2), a hotel (5000m2), a training school (6000m2) and a
greenhouse. Take advantage of the natural hilly topography of the site, a
production line by the gravity without using the pumps was considered
in the design of winery, which made it possible to provide the best qual-
ity ¨hand made¨ wine in massive production. As far as the architectural
aesthetics, the couple of Mr. Langes-Swarovski, two experts in viniculture
serving for the family and me, we went to the Tuscana area of Italy for doing
a research together about bodegas and hospitality. Finally we achieved an
agreement to apply the Italian style in this project.
