The document discusses a project linking regional archival photo collections using advanced visual technologies. A collaboration between the University of Wollongong Archives Library, Illawarra Museum and Historical Society, and Wollongong City Libraries received a community engagement grant from the University of Wollongong in 2017. The project is in its final stages of improving design, developing mobile capabilities, gathering public feedback, selecting the best technology for on-site engagement, and launch.
9. Final stages…
• Improve the look/design
• Develop mobile device capability
• Make it available to the public for feedback
• Confirm best technology for customers to
engage with the project on site
• Launch the project
Hinweis der Redaktion
School of Computing & Information Technology had been working with the National archives & testing the use of image recognition software as a means of searching for and locating images rather than metadata
Idea to apply it to local archival image collections led to the invitation to three different organisations to participate
A UOW Community Engagement grant was successfully applied for enabling work on the project to commence in 2017
Meetings, sharing images, site development, testing, feedback, more development & testing has led to the site I’m going to share with you today -
Explore at random is an easy way to bowse across the three collections
Explore while typing – initiates a search using text
Selecting an image, displays any metadata attached to that image, plus locates similar images using image recognition
Explore with your image – enables user to upload an image and compare it against the 3 collections to find a match – using image recognition technology not metadata
Provides a means for learning more about an image
For WCL it is a great way for checking if new donations are already held or not
An unidentified image finds a match
Select the image to view the metadata
In addition to providing metadata, it also looks for similar looking images which potentially will provide more information
Great way for people to engage with the collections and discover local content and stories
