What does book review mean?
Before you know how to write a book review, you should gure out what it is. A review is a critical
analysis of a work of any style, containing an assessment of the work.
Reviews can be divided into:
1. Expanded annotation, which will reveal the content of the work.
2. A small article in which the work is an occasion for discussing urgent problems.
3. An essay dominated by the reviewer’s thoughts about the book or the writer.
4. Author’s review – the author’s opinion on his work.
5. Review – the review text includes several works, which are united by plot, topic, chronology, etc.
how to write a book review?

When you start writing a review, you should understand that writing not only forms the nal idea of
the book for you but also creates the rst idea of the book among people who read your review.
To write a good book review, you will need to re-read the work you are evaluating.
Your assessment must be fair, considering all the advantages and disadvantages of the book.
You need to have the information about the author, the title of the book, etc.
You need to evaluate the actions of the heroes, their characters.
It is desirable to keep within the average review volume – from 1000 to 3000 characters.
you have to avoid the opinion of others.
The review text must be written without errors.
you should write the conclusion you have drawn after reading the book.
How to write a good book Review-Writing
Plan
If you do not know where to start, and how to write a good book review, setting out all your thoughts,
then this plan can help you:
1. Information about the book: its title, author, year of publication.
2. A small retelling of the content of the work (one-three sentences).
3. Your impressions of this book.
4. Analysis of the work: content, structure, title, etc.
5. Advantages and disadvantages of the book.
6. Your assessment and conclusions. Recommendations to readers.
Structure of review
1. Introductory part. There are no special rules, it is a matter of everyone’s interest. You can include
some quotes from the work or brie y describe the plot.  Or you can start with your impressions right
away. Most people nd it easier to start sharing the impressions of the book they read.
2. The main idea. Here you can show the main idea in the book. But don’t tell stories to your readers.
Here it will be more skillful to talk about how the author approached the revelation of the characters,
how believable they are, or talk about the main idea of the work, the author’s writing style.
3. Analysis of work. A small note: it is more appropriate to start with the title of the book, as it
expresses the idea of the work. And here you can describe what mood the book sets, how time and
place of action are related to the subject of the book. Track the behavior of the main characters: how
their armor, thoughts, and feelings change in the plot, how they work when faced with dif culties, etc.
4. Conclusions. Here you can talk about your impressions, give an evaluation, talk about the relevance
of the work or you can compare the work with other works of the author.
What to consider when writing a book
review?
• Plot: its logic, dynamism, etc.
• How well the protagonist of the book is worked out, their characters, behavior;
• The language of the writer, his style;
• Check if there are any inconsistencies in the book;
• Relevance of the book;
• Your feelings.
It is not necessary to take all the points and describe them in the review. You can choose only those
that you like and you want to tell about them.
Tips for writing a review
If the reviewer expresses his thoughts well and competently, then he can arouse the reader’s interest
in the book. Some tips on how to write a review:
1. It is better not to read someone else’s opinion about the work for which you are going to write.
Someone else’s thoughts can confuse you, and you can write about the book in the words of a
stranger. Even if you wrote a review and found a text on this work with an opinion that
coincides with yours, do not be discouraged. In a good book review, it is your feelings and
impressions that are important.
2. If your opinion does not match the majority, then it is de nitely appropriate to write your
opinion about this book. Even if this book is known as a masterpiece and everyone appreciates
the author’s work, you can still express your opinion. Maybe your review will be more helpful.
3. If in the book you were not satis ed with one moment or you were unhappy with it, then tell us
in as much detail as possible what you didn’t like. There is a rule: The more negative impression
the book leaves behind, the more sentences should be written. In this case, you should conduct
a detailed analysis and explain your point of view.
Review Ethics
Yes, reviewing also has its own ethics and it is better to follow it if you want to write a good book
review.
1. One should always check all dates, title facts, and names.
2. Better to keep a businesslike and friendly tone.
3. Do not let your attitude towards the writer in uence your opinion about the work.
4. Do not impose your point of view on the author.
Avoid Common mistakes
Check out the most common mistakes when writing a book review
Mistake 1. The most common mistake is retelling the events taking place in the book.
Mistake 2. Transition to the identity of the author.
Mistake 3. Rudeness, familiarity.
Mistake 4. Application of subjective value judgments (good / bad, talented / mediocre).
7 steps to write a good book review
Here are 7 important steps to guide who want to write a book review.
1.Includes the book’s publication date
It includes the data of the publication, which edition it is, of which year, and which publisher. Many
times these data say interesting things about the book. For example, if you have read the tenth
edition, it means that it has been sold out nine times in the market and that it has been reprinted due
to the high demand it has. A new edition means that the book has been successful.
Other information such as the translator, the foreword, or particular characteristics of the edition, also
enriches the review. There are differences between the different editions of the same work; Each
editorial includes details of form and sometimes changes the translator.
2.Identify the character of the characters
Identifying the personality and character of the main characters is key in any reading. How they
express themselves, what they like, what the story says about their habits and philosophy.
3.Include an outline and timeline
Outlining the plot or characters, or making a timeline, can be helpful, especially in long novels where
there are many characters and some complexity in the narrative.
4.Find out what the theme and background re ection is
Identifying the underlying theme and its relationship to real-life is reading in more depth. There are
many works that have a transcendental background re ection and that create a link between literary
ction, myths, our beliefs, and everyday life.
5.Write how the book begins and ends
Pay attention to how the book begins and ends: the rst page contains many clues to what the whole
story will be like. In the history of literature, there are memorable opening paragraphs (The rst
paragraph of One Hundred Years of Solitude is a good example). How a narrative begins and how it
ends are the entrance and exit doors of reading.
6.Add memorable quotes from the characters and the author
Take note of interesting aspects or prominent phrases in a common habit of all good readers. In books,
there are true gems of human thought expressed in brilliant phrases that account for an entire era, an
ideology, a deep feeling, or a powerful re ection. The memorable phrases, the ones that have made
you think and feel something special, are key when de ning how to write a review.
7.Share your reading recommendation
Finally, after careful reading, could you recommend reading the book? What audience would you
recommend it to? The reading recommendation is very important because it can in uence, positively
or negatively, the sales of a publication. The recommendation has a very important value in this digital
age in which social networks serve to share comments and evaluations of all kinds of products. If
reading a book has left you something, why not share this with others?
