Fastrack institute Overview (Feb 2018)
1.
2. If you could solve four major challenges in the
city you love, what would they be?
Within six months, the Fastrack Institute helps
you find those solutions by using proven
methods that are 10 times faster, cheaper and
more effective. We leverage exponentially
accelerating technologies to scale our solutions’
impact from minimal resources.
3. The future is widely misunderstood. Our
forebears expected it to be pretty much
like their present, which had been pretty
much like their past.
We will see changes in the next 100
years equivalent to the last 20,000 years.
— Ray Kurzweil
4. In eleven years from now everyday
computers will have the computational
power of a human brain.
By 2050-2060 that same computer will
have the computational power of all 7BN
human brains combined.
Exponential
Growth in
Computing
5. Exponential
Change is
Everywhere
Every industry will be disrupted by
exponentially accelerating technologies
such as AI, robotics, autonomous vehicles,
drones, renewable energy, nanotechnology,
synthetic biology and many more.
6. For the first time in human history,
individuals/people/communities
have the same innovation power as
large companies, individuals, and
even nation-states.
7. When citizens do what companies
did, and companies do what
government did in the past, what
is government doing now?
— Peter Diamandis
8. An Operating System for Fixing Civilization
● Fastrack will revitalize cities and make them more livable for more
people and more prosperous by adopting the disruptive strategies of
exponential businesses.
● We adopt Exponential Organizations (ExO Works) methodology for
solving urban problems 10x faster and/or at one-tenth the cost.
● The Fastrack framework rapidly establishes design solutions,
governance approaches and regulatory frameworks for cities.
11. Most of the World’s
Population lives in
Cities
As of today already more than 50% of the
world’s population lives in cities.
This number is expected to rise to 75% by
2050 – nearly 7BN people.
12. People Identify
With Their City
Studies show that people identify with the
city they live in more so than with the region
or country.
Cities are the collective unit citizens feel
most connected to as they have the most
direct influence and see the results of both
their tax payment as well as their voting
power most directly.
13. Cities Are the Right
Entities to Solve
the Problems and
Create Reusable
Blueprints
Decision-making is fast(er), access to
resources is more direct, public/private
partnerships are (more) common and easier
to realize.
Solutions developed in one city can be
ported relatively easily to another city.
Information-sharing is (yet) not common but
easy to do.
17. Stage 1:
Awake
An ExO Workshop will familiarize senior
leadership with the ExO Ecosystem and the two
primary ExO Frameworks. The one day
Workshop will provide an introduction to the
disruptive forces, trends, and technologies
shaping the world and the world that will impact
your city and its organizations. The Workshop is
a mix of presentations, insights, research,
advice, facilitated exercises, group work, and
personal moments of reflection. After the one
day Workshop, leadership will be ready to
embark on a journey of transformation through
the Fastrack process for their city.
18. Stage 2:
Problem Definition
It is crucial to have a thorough understanding of
the problem for which solutions will be created.
This stage is designed to fully explore the
problem space. After a Kickoff Phase which
invites key stakeholders into the process, a
Problem Clarification workshop crystallizes the
specific problem domain into a specific problem
area. Followed by a Problem Definition
workshop, where teams are formed to collect
and document information in an open process.
The results of the Problem Definition stage will
be made available publicly to all participating
parties.
19. Stage 3:
Ideation and
Team Formation
In this stage a competition is held to source the
best ideas from a wide array of participants. The
resulting input and expertise along with all of
the information that was provided in prior
stages is combined to generate numerous ideas
for solving the problem in an open innovation
process and create the teams that will propose
scalable solutions over the next stage, the Team
Stage.
20. Stage 4:
Team Stage
The team stage is the longest stage. It is where
the teams that were formed during the ideation
and team formation section put their heads
down and work for 6-8 weeks to create
exponential technology driven solutions using
the Fastrack framework. This stage culminates
in an exciting presentation event where both
teams present their solutions to the
marketplace. Teams progress through five
distinct stages (phase gates), each with distinct
selection criteria and incentives: Conceptual
Phase, Social Phase, Entrepreneurial Phase,
Technology Phase and Final Presentation.
21. Stage 5:
Acceleration
The solutions created need additional support
to move forward from prototypes and minimum
viable products to full-fledged businesses. This
is where Acceleration partner networks come
into play. They take the solutions produced and
begin the process with the full support of the
Fastrack team to move them forward into the
region and the world.

● Open Source the Methodology
○ Fully document and open source the Fastrack Sprint Methodology for cities and solution providers
around the world to pick it up and execute
● Create a Full Suite of Products
○ Develop additional product offerings such as a learning/discovery sprint (Awake) to round out the
product portfolio
● Develop Network/Membership Model
○ Bring the world’s leading cities together in a network of uncommon partners and shift FTI’s business
model toward a membership
