Introduction
Communication is simply the act of
transferring information from one place,
person or group to another.
Every communication involves (at least)
one sender, a message and a recipient.
These include our emotions, the cultural
situation, the medium used to
communicate, and even our location.
12/04/2021 Communication at Workplace 3
Importance of Communication
Builds and maintains
relationships
Relationships are built and
can be maintained by positive
encounters with others.
Communication will be key to
this process – without
effective skills, it will be
difficult to properly construct
and foster productive
relationships.
1
Facilitates Innovation
When employees feel
comfortable in openly
communication new ideas,
cooperation and innovation
will be at an all-time high. In
addition, if staff are unable to
convey their ideas due to
limited communication skills,
it is likely that the idea will not
be implemented to its full
potential.
2
Builds an effective
Team
If communication within a
workplace is encouraged, a
more cohesive and effective
team will emerge. Good
communication within a
team also tends to boost
employee morale.
3
Contributes to Growth of
Company
A lack of communication can
lead to the collapse any
organization. Whilst that is a
bold statement – without
proper marketing collateral
and communication internally
and externally, most
organizations will struggle to
survive.
4
Ensures Transparency
When regularly
communicating both
internally and externally,
organizations remain more
transparent. This is important
to build trust in your brand, in
your services and also
internally when it comes to
the trust that employees have
in higher management.

Different Communication Channels
Formal
Communication
Channel
• These channels are officially
defined pathways that follow
the chain of command or
hierarchy in organizations.
• These channels being
official and holding authority
are used to send letters,
emails, policy statements or
announcements.
Informal
Communication
Channel
• Some managers use these
informal networks to
facilitate formal
communication channels or
to gather information.
• Takes a number of forms,
such as unofficial networks
that supplement the formal
channels and the grapevine
and gossip.
Quasiformal
Communication
Channel
• Quasiformal channels are
planned communication
connections between
holders of various positions
within the organisation.
• They are partly formal, and
add additional channels
between the formal and
informal channels.

Barriers to Effective
Communication
12/04/2021 Communication at Workplace 7
• The process of communication has
multiple barriers. The intended
communique will often be disturbed and
distorted leading to a condition of
misunderstanding and failure of
communication.
• The Barriers to effective communication
could be of many types like linguistic,
psychological, emotional, physical, and
cultural etc.

Some of Communication Barriers
Linguistic Barrier
The fact that each
major region has its
own language is one of
the barrier in effective
communication.
Sometimes a thick
dialect may render the
communication
ineffective.
Psychological Barrier
There are various
mental and
psychological issues
like stage fear, speech
disorders, phobia,
depression, etc.
Emotional Barrier
The emotional IQ
determines the ease
and comfort with which
they can communicate.
Emotions like anger,
frustration, humour can
blur decision-making
capabilities of a
person.
Physical Barrier
They are the most
obvious barrier to
effective
communication which
includes noise, closed
doors, faulty
equipment, closed
cabins, etc.
Attitude Barrier
Certain people like to
be left alone. They are
the introverts or just
the people who are not
very social. Others like
to be social. Both
these cases become a
barrier to
communication.
How to overcome communication barriers
?
12/04/2021 Communication at Workplace 9
Barriers to communication can be overcome by:
• Checking whether it is a good time and place to communicate with
the person.
• Being clear and using language that the person understands.
• Communicating one thing at a time.
• Checking that the person has understood you correctly.
• Communicating in a location that is free of distractions.
• Acknowledging any emotional responses the person has to what you
have said.
Thank you
