  10. Make your Career in Agronomy
  11. Make career in Agronomy  Science and technology of producing and using plants for food, fuel, fiber, and land reclamation.  To impart knowledge and skills in crop production for efficient resource management to develop crop production technology for sustained productivity and profitability  Agronomists often specialize in areas such as  Crop rotation, irrigation and drainage  Plant breeding and Plant physiology  Soil classification and soil fertility  Weed control  Insect and pest management
  12. MAKE YOUR CAREER IN HORTICULTURE
  13. To become an Horticulturalist  Fruit Science  To enhance productivity and quality of fruit crops and to diversify agriculture  To serve farming community and raise their economic livelihood with improved horticultural crops.  To upgrade skills of farming community and field workers  Vegetable Science  Development of improved varieties and hybrids of vegetable crops for higher yield, better quality, resistant to disease and insect-pest.  Improved production and plant protection technology and solutions to emerging problems.  To act as centre of training for up gradation of scientific manpower in vegetable crops.  To disseminate the scientific information to the farmers through various extension education programmes.  Landscape and Floriculture  Breeding of ornamentals for cut flower production, pot culture and garden display  Standardization of production and protection technology for ornamentals  Standardization of post harvest technology
  14. MAKE YOUR CAREER IN PLANT BREEDING
  15. To become an Plant Breeder  To improve the quality and performance of existing agricultural and horticultural crops as well as create new varieties.  Aim to develop useful traits, such as disease resistance or drought tolerance, or to improve characteristics such as appearance.  Role is vital to the agricultural industry as there are constant challenges to meet market requirements, consumer demands and increase and maintain yields in important crops.  Plant breeder have enhanced the traditional work of crossing existing plants and selecting new strains and expertise allows quicker, more accurate work by selecting the plants containing the genes of interest.
  16. CHOOSING PLANT BREEDING AS A CAREER This field is so broad, plant breeding technicians or scientists may specialize in various areas such as  Plant genetics  Conservation work  Environmental biology  Limnology (the study of freshwater plants, animals and chemistry)  Mycology (the study of fungi)  Taxonomy and systematic (the classification of plants and their relationships).  Genetic Engineering
  17. JOB OPPOURTUNITIES Plant Breeders can make a career in education and research in  31 Agriculture Universities in the country  40 ICAR Institutes  Seed production Agencies of the government (National Seed Corporation, State Seed Corporations, SFCI etc)  International crop research institutes under CGIAR system also offer jobs to plant breeders.  Indian seed industry, also offers large number of jobs.
