Let’s go back a little!
• Before panda, it was spam all over the

internet with low quality sites!!!
• Uses were not happy with what they
searched for
• Google‟s brain-child “Panda” was born!
• In fact it was Mr. Navneet Panda, a search
engineer @google, was behind this, hence
the name.
Is Panda the first update from Google?
No! There have been several changes in
the past, some minor, a few major ones.
• Florida in 2003

• Vince update in 2009
• Mayday in 2010

Since then all was good till 22Feb 2011…
Why was Panda introduced?
• Google needs to deliver what users want!

• An avalanche of new sites every day
• Users were not happy
• Google has to combat the floods of „low quality content‟ sites and

the Panda update is their answer!
And it began!
An algorithm change to make SERPs
 Relevant
 Reduce SPAM
 Filter low quality content
 Improve its own algorithm

And it started finding low quality content sites to
reduce them from SERPs, at the same time
promoting high quality content sites!
Who got affected??
• Sites with copied-poor-less content

• Article sites with low, duplicate content
• Sites with incomplete on-site work
• Sites with too many advertisements(can’t see

whole content!)
• Travel sites with poor or duplicated reviews
• Sites with poor usability
• E-commerce sites-poor products pages
What exactly Happened?
Google started scrutinizing …Things were looked at
differently.

 Content-thin-shallow-poor-copied
 User -design-interface
 Car Dealers, Ice-cream – Relevancy
 User-time-site-page-visits-again-bounce

• Sudden drop in traffic
• Keyword is not reachable!!
• Some got penalized!
• Sudden & drastic gain in unique visitors
• Keyword goes straight up!
• Drop in page rank

Businesses collapsed, some flourished & SEOs were
bewildered!

 Create unique, high quality content
 User signals-Evaluate-refine
 Make yourself known! …Be

heard, build trust!
 Housekeeping –quality-not
quantity!
! Things to Remember !
 Panda penalizes not only on page level, but on

site level as well
 Check all the pages of site and make appropriate
changes if needed.
 Improve web presence through social media
 Google‟s goal is to keep internet users happy with
the search results it generates
 Try to keep “Google & User” both happy @ the
same time! 
