who initiate, organize and operate a business enterprise.”
The Govt. of India notes women entrepreneurs as
“Enterprise owned and controlled by women saving a
minimum financial interest of 51% of the capital and giving
at least 51% of the employment generated in the
enterprise to women”.

considerably during the past few decades. More and more high
educational and research institutions are imparting knowledge
and specialization. At this juncture, effective steps are needed to
provide entrepreneurial awareness, orientation and skill
development programs to women. The institutions available at
present are very limited. Moreover, their functions and
opportunities available with them are not popularized much.
Motivation is the key for successful Women Entrepreneurs. They
are in all industries today.
In the US, women own 25% of all business. In Canada they own
1/3 of all business. In France they own1/5 of all business. The
areas of business are Retail, restaurants, hotels, education,
cultural, cleaning, insurance and manufacturing.

business in their early 30s after completing their education and
after marriage. They usually have prior experience in their new
venture as a result of education and exposure to realities of
business. Women entrepreneurs usually desire freedom and
independence. They don’t want to work under any superior.
They are self-confident and hence have a high tolerance for
uncertainty and obstacle. They are usually moderate risk takers
and have high energy level. In the startup of business they may
face problems such as liquidity or availability of funds. It
generally takes some time to break-even in a new business.
Chances of success are usually high in smaller businesses.

dominated society due to which they face various
social issues. Generally women are expected to
fulfill family obligations as per the cultural values
and social beliefs existing in the society due to
which they face the role conflict between family
and business. Women in many countries including
India face gender discrimination.
