There are multiple reasons one might want to run VMs inside containers. One scenario could be running VMs as part of a CI pipeline which executes all build steps inside containers. This can be useful, for example, for emulating bare-metal deployments. In this talk, I will demonstrate how to create a virtual machine inside a Docker container using KVM as the hypervisor driver, explain how the container needs to be configured in terms of privileges and discuss some of the challenges involved.

Then will cover using Puppet for more advanced provisioning, making the addition of multiple development environments and servers easier and faster. If you’re developing and are not sure what these technologies are, this talk is for you. As a developer it’s increasingly important to ensure our development, testing, staging, and production environments are as closely matched to each other as possible, alleviating the “can’t reproduce it on my machine” excuses. Whether you use 2, 3, or 4 of these environments is of less importance if they are all built on the same “stack” of applications.

CRaSH is the open source shell for the JVM. The shell can be accessed by various ways, remotely using network protocols such as SSH, locally by attaching a shell to a running virtual machine or via a web interface. Commands are written Groovy and can be developed live making the extensibility of the shell easy with quick development cycles. Since the version 1.3, the REPL also speaks the Groovy language, allowing Groovy combination of command using pipes. CRaSH comes with commands such as thread management, log management, database access and JMX. The session will begin with an introduction to the shell. The main part of the session will focus on showing CRaSH commands development with few examples, showing how easy and powerful the development is. The audience will learn how to use CRaSH for their own needs: it can be a simple usage or more advanced like developing a command or embedding the shell in their own runtime like a web application or a Grails application.

Virtualization, briefly, is the separation of resources or requests for a service from the underlying physical delivery of that service. It is a concept in which access to a single underlying piece of hardware is coordinated so that multiple guest operating systems can share a single piece of hardware, with no guest operating system being aware that it is actually sharing anything at all.

As developers we have seen these problems: Our development environments accumulate lots of applications and libraries over a period of months. We are usually in the habit of installing everything in one machine. We fear that we may screw up our development environment and that means unproductive man-hours. We forget that a multi-machine deployment is different from a single machine deployment. How about virtualization in the desktop? In this demo, I will take you through the steps to create a multi-VM development environment. This demo will make use of QEMU, KVM and Virt Manager and show you how you can create a VM image, and then start servers with a set of commands, deploy your app, test everything and tear down the environment once you are happy - all this in the cosy comforts of your laptop or desktop. The Jnaapti development environment is based on this setup.
