Youth unemployment has been an issue in Lithuania from 2003-2011, with 13% of all registered unemployed being young adults. Most unemployed youth have a secondary level of education. Women account for 42% of unemployed youth and have a higher rate of long-term unemployment, as employers often prefer young married men due to concerns about long maternity leaves. The consequences of youth unemployment in Lithuania include emigration, suicide, theft, divorces, and poverty, given the minimum salary is only 300 euros. Policymakers need to address this issue to help more young people find work.
