3. What is CAD/CAM/CAE?
CAD: Computer aided design is the use of computer system to assist in the creation,
Modification, analysis or optimization of a design.
CAM: Computer aided manufacturing is the use of computer software to control machine
tools and relative machinery in the manufacturing of work pieces.
CAE: Computer aided engineering is the use of computer software to solve engineering
problems.
“A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that
works with as few ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering.”
- Freeman Dyson
5. Engineers and draftsmen use computer-aided design software to create illustrations or 3D models.
For example, in some environments, design engineers are for creating the initial design in a CAD program,
while analysis and release engineers will review and analyze it to make sure there are no errors
Design engineering
CAD
1. Prototyping , fabrication
2. CNC machining
3. Automotive, Aerospace and Defense
CAD software are used to draw and model products
to be manufactured.
APPLICATIONS
There are a variety of highly specialized software
designed for specific industries. A few of the popular
CAD /CAE tools for professional engineers include:
1. AUTOCAD
2. SOLIDWORKS
3. CATIA
4. ANSYS
We will briefly get familiar about these softwares.
6. 2D Modelling
CAD software is used for basic 2D geometry construction. This can be used in routing, plasma, water
jet, cnc burning etc. This can be processed into NC codes or G-code for machining and 3d printing
Geometry includes Points, line circle, dimensions, drafting which can be easily trimmed mirrored and
translated.
3D Modelling
3D modeling or CAD (Computer Aided Design) allows engineers and designers to build realistic
computer models of parts and assemblies. These models can be then 3D Printed or CNC machined
as well as used to run complex simulations.

8. AUTOCAD
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) program used for 2-D and 3-D design and drafting. AutoCAD is
developed and marketed by Autodesk Inc.
Name of mainly used
toolbar in AutoCAD:
1.Draw
2.Modify
3.Layer
4.Dimensioning
5.Properties
9. SOLIDWORKS
Solidworks is a solid modelling CAD and
Computer aided engineering CAE program
that runs on windows. It was published by
Dassault Systems. Over 300 million
engineers and designers use this software.
SolidWorks has a context-sensitive menu
structure.

1. Base feature
2. Boss
3. Cut
4. Hole
5. Fillet
6. Loft
7. Chamfer
Assembly Design:
1. Such design consists of two or more components
assembled together at their respective work
positions using parametric relations
2. All components are created as separate part
documents and then they are placed and referred in
the assembly as external components.
3. Drafting can be extracted from the drawing itself.
12. CATIA
CATIA (an acronym of computer aided three-dimensional interactive application) developed by the
French company Dassault Systèmes.
Interface(GUI)
1. SPECIFICATION TREE
Provides history as to how the
part was constructed. Solid
parts are stored as part body
1. MOUSE CONTROLS.
Pan, Rotate or zoom can be
done with a mouse or using the
compass
1. TOOLBARS
View toolbars, copy/paste, etc
13. Sketcher Module
The Sketcher workbench is a set of tools that
helps you create and constrain 2D geometries.
Features (pads, pockets, shafts, etc...) may then
be created solids or modifications to solids using
these 2D profiles. You can access the Sketcher
workbench in many ways. Two simple ways are
by using the top pull down menu (Start –
Mechanical Design – Sketcher), or by selecting
the Sketcher icon.
Part Design Module
Part design environment is used to create 3D
models from the basic 2D sketches created in
sketcher environment
Pad, rob, slot commands
14. Assembly environment is used to provide mating to two or more part
models to from complete assembly
Assembly
CATIA V5 Analysis provides the ability to design simulations within
the CATIA design environment, allowing constructors to directly
analyze their main reference model in CATIA.
18. Computer aided engineering(CAE)
In today’s increasingly globalized economy,, it has become difficult for manufacturers to identify, analyze,
and fulfill consumer desires and their respective expectations. It can be achieved by optimizing the
development processes. . Today’s design processes are carried out completely in computer-aided design-
and simulation environment, the Computer-Aided Design & Applications, present approach emphasizes
focusing the application in common CAx–systems (CAx – computer-aided x, where x is a placeholder, e.g.
CAD, CAE, etc.). This in turn provides an enhancement of the data exchange between design, simulation
and production/manufacturing development.
Analyses
1. Generative Structural Analysis (GAE)
the simulation of the mechanical behavior of the product at an
early stage of the design process. This are carried out after the
designing processes.
It can be carried out in CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS, NX
19. 2. FEM and Structural Analysis (FAX)
CATIA - FEM and Structural Analysis delivers a
complete solution for modeling and analysis using
the finite element method and encompasses a
wide range of structural analytical processes
