2. What Is Pastiche?
Pastiche is defined by the Oxford Living Dictionary as ’An artistic
work in a style that imitiates that of another work, artist, or period.’
Derived from the Italian word pasticcio which refers to a paté or pie
filling made from diverse ingredients. Pastiche describes work that
is either done by many artists or incorporates stylistic elements
from other artists.
Pastiche has been used in music as far back as Mozart who is
said to have incorporated elements from Baroque music.
3. Blur ‘The Universal’
This video is a pastiche of Stanley Kubrick’s now
infamous film ‘A Clockwork Orange’. In particular the
video copies a scene where the main protagonist of the
film, Alex, is sat having a drink with his friends in an
establishment known as the Korova Milk Bar. This can
be clearly seen in the costumes and attempts to mimic
the set.
It has also been said that the set for Blur’s video also
resembles the interior of the space station in 2001 A
Space Odyssey.
7. Mallory Knox ‘Beggars’
Whilst Blur can be said to have done a pastiche of A
Clockwork Orange, Mallory Knox have all but
completely recreated an entire scene from the film. In
the video for ‘Beggars’ the band are shown walking up
to an old beggar under a railway bridge just as Alex
and his companions did in the film. Unlike Alex and co
they are not there with the intention of hurting the old
man but wrap him in a blanket instead. In many ways
this may be a better pastiche than the Blur video as
they copy the costumes and the setting of the scene
more closely.
