Drilling
Delays
Breakdowns
Positioning
The impact of a
breakdown and delays
results in less drilling,
sub standard operational
behavior
It also means that less face
holes were drilled,
compromising the quality of
the blast and then increasing
night shift time travelling to
station tips
The less delays and
breakdowns we have
the more efficient
the drill rig is and
the shorter the cycle
The graphs below illustrate the positioning of the operators, showing the date and work place.

Positioning(06/04)(50/20)
 Assistant Instructors are the miner and shift boss in most cases
and this result in the frequency in positioning being inconsistent
and above the trend line.
 Moving the whole rig to position the boom.
 Installing support whiles rig is operating.
 Moving the boom whiles having a conversation with a colleague.
 Night shift cleaning process still in progress.
 Hoppers and loaders left in a rig’s paths by night shift crew.
 Electricity tripping whiles drill rigs are operating.
 Rig arriving at the face and awaits marking to be finished.
 Rig being derailed before reaching the face.
 Construction workers on top of battery box.
 With the HPE drill rig, it was found that both booms are
operating at 53.38% on average, average delays 16.53% and
breakdowns 7.43%.
 This is one reason why the crews using the HPE knock off with
the shift; the breakdowns are reduced by the technician’s
availability during operation and his commitment to fixing the
boom further after drilling.
 Their positioning as well (50.25sec average/boom) with drilling
average (4min 35sec/boom) contribute to the rigs efficiency at
46/west.
 On average drill rigs are currently drilling 51, 31% of their available time,
and from the above graph we see drilling moving between 40-60%.
 On 25/03,09/04,12/04and14/04 delays exceeded 20% because of the
following factors:
-(25/03,50/26) the rig delayed for 1hr:19min which counts 64% of the
total delays during the process caused by night shift cleaning process,
marking and preparing the face.
-(09/04,46/west) jumper was stuck on the rock frequently over 50 min
in total and 24min during pre-start check as well.
-(12/04,46/west). Before machine started drilling delays due to
hoppers left by night shift and power tripping was experienced
accounting to 94% of the total delays.
 24/03 and 16/04 delays and breakdowns were low because of lower
delays before drilling started.
 We can also see from the graph that the higher the breakdowns on the
rigs the less drilling will be achieved e.g. 06/04, 09/04, 14/04. Exceeding
10%.
 Positioning is much more stable contributing 11, 60% on average of the
total time and on the following dates we had a percentage greater than
10%.
 Delays occurring before drilling can be avoided
therefore miners should practically tell workers
to stop wasting time and prevent scenarios from
happening in advance including night shift.
 Eliminate the inconsistencies of operators
allocated locations of working areas.
 Technicians must be available through out the
drilling cycle at all levels.
 Miners & shift bosses should explain before hand
or during safety meetings how the operator
should drill, and partly monitor during the
drilling process.
 Attention must be given to the electricity cables
leading to connection boxes at (46/west).

  • 10.  Assistant Instructors are the miner and shift boss in most cases and this result in the frequency in positioning being inconsistent and above the trend line.
  • 11.  With the HPE drill rig, it was found that both booms are operating at 53.38% on average, average delays 16.53% and breakdowns 7.43%.  This is one reason why the crews using the HPE knock off with the shift; the breakdowns are reduced by the technician’s availability during operation and his commitment to fixing the boom further after drilling.  Their positioning as well (50.25sec average/boom) with drilling average (4min 35sec/boom) contribute to the rigs efficiency at 46/west.
  • 12.  On average drill rigs are currently drilling 51, 31% of their available time, and from the above graph we see drilling moving between 40-60%.  On 25/03,09/04,12/04and14/04 delays exceeded 20% because of the following factors: -(25/03,50/26) the rig delayed for 1hr:19min which counts 64% of the total delays during the process caused by night shift cleaning process, marking and preparing the face. -(09/04,46/west) jumper was stuck on the rock frequently over 50 min in total and 24min during pre-start check as well. -(12/04,46/west). Before machine started drilling delays due to hoppers left by night shift and power tripping was experienced accounting to 94% of the total delays.  24/03 and 16/04 delays and breakdowns were low because of lower delays before drilling started.  We can also see from the graph that the higher the breakdowns on the rigs the less drilling will be achieved e.g. 06/04, 09/04, 14/04. Exceeding 10%.  Positioning is much more stable contributing 11, 60% on average of the total time and on the following dates we had a percentage greater than 10%.
  • 13.  Delays occurring before drilling can be avoided therefore miners should practically tell workers to stop wasting time and prevent scenarios from happening in advance including night shift.  Eliminate the inconsistencies of operators allocated locations of working areas.  Technicians must be available through out the drilling cycle at all levels.  Miners & shift bosses should explain before hand or during safety meetings how the operator should drill, and partly monitor during the drilling process.  Attention must be given to the electricity cables leading to connection boxes at (46/west).
