Cheap Tips for Whitening Your Teeth At Home
Most people wouldn’t mind if their teeth were a shade or two whiter. There’s a whole industry built
around this desire, with dozens of expensive products promising whiter teeth.
If you only want your teeth to be a few shades whiter, then you don’t really need a dentist to whiten
your teeth for you. You don’t have to spend a small fortune on the latest home whitening kits, either.
There are a few inexpensive products—things you might already have in your medicine cabinet—that
are just as good at getting the job done.
What causes yellow teeth?
If your teeth have lost their white luster, you
can probably blame time as the main culprit.
Your enamel gets thinner and more
transparent with age, and the layer just
below it, called dentin, becomes more
visible.
Certain foods and liquids, if consumed
frequently, can stain your teeth. Coffee, tea,
and soda seem to be the worst offenders,
and tobacco use can cause your teeth to
turn an ugly greyish color. Simply reducing your consumption of these things can help you reverse the
trend away from discoloration and toward a brighter smile!
The secret to cheap home whitening
If you look at the ingredients to almost any home-whitening product, you’ll discover one re-occurring
item on the list: hydrogen peroxide.
Hydrogen Peroxide is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) for whitening use. Be sure to
find a 3% solution, which is available at pretty much every pharmacy. Take these simple steps when
using hydrogen peroxide for home whitening:
1. Make your own whitening mouthwash with a 50-50 mix of water and hydrogen peroxide.
2. Swish a little amount in your mouth for about a minute.
3. Rinse your mouth with water.
4. Only repeat once a week. Using this method to whiten your teeth too often can wear away your
tooth enamel.
You can improve this process by brushing your teeth with baking soda. You can make a paste by mixing
baking soda with regular toothpaste, and use it to brush your teeth immediately after the hydrogen
peroxide mouthwash. Again, don’t do this more than once a week.
Eat foods with natural whitening properties
Not all foods will stain your teeth. Some can actually help turn your teeth whiter.
Strawberries contain malic acid, which can naturally lift stains on your teeth. To magnify the power of
strawberries, mash some up in your mouth and leave them there for a minute, working them across
your teeth with your tongue.
Eating the crispier fruits and veggies like celery, apples, and carrots can help you whiten your teeth as
well. These foods work as a kind of natural toothbrush, scrubbing your teeth as you chew.
Get input from your dentist
There is no substitute for regular brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to your dentist. A dentist
will be able to provide you with input on whitening treatments, and can keep you from doing something
that might harm your teeth.
