Defining Social Psychiatry in the 21st Century: The 23rd World Congress of Social Psychiatry, Bucharest, Romania, October 25-28, 2019 & World Social Psychiatry Vincenzo Di Nicola, MPhil, MD, PhD, FRCPC, DFAPA Founder & President, Canadian Association of Social Psychiatry/ Association canadienne de psychiatrie sociale Chief, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Montreal University Institute for Mental Health Professor, University of Montreal and The George Washington University To highlight the re-establishment of the Canadian Association of Social Psychiatry this year, I have been invited to present a review article in the inaugural issue of the new psychiatric journal, World Social Psychiatry, to be launched at the World Congress of Social Psychiatry, Bucharest, Romania, October 25-28, 2019. Inspired by a Zulu saying which gets to the heart of the argument, my article is called, “ ‘A Person Is a Person Through Other Persons’: A Social Psychiatry Manifesto for the 21st Century.” A critical issue for our field is how to define contemporary social psychiatry for our times. In my forthcoming article, I address this definitional task by breaking it down into three major questions for social psychiatry and conclude with a call for action, a manifesto for the 21st century social psychiatry: (1) What is social about psychiatry? I address definitional problems that arise, such as binary thinking, and the need for a common language. (2) What are the theory and practice of social psychiatry? Issues include social psychiatry’s core principles, values, and operational criteria; the social determinants of health and the Global Mental Health (GMH) Movement; and the need for translational research. This part of the review establishes the minimal criteria for a coherent theory of social psychiatry and the view of persons that emerges from such a theory, the social self. (3) Why the time has come for a manifesto for social psychiatry. I outline the parameters for a theory of social psychiatry, based on both the social self and the social determinants of health, to offer an inclusive social definition of health, concluding with a call for action, a manifesto for the 21st century social psychiatry. In a parallel activity at the World Congress, an international symposium with the theme of defining social psychiatry in the 21st century will bring together eminent psychiatrists from several continents to address this important task for the field of social psychiatry. Professors Adalberto Barreto from Brazil, BS Chavan from India, Oye Gureje from Nigeria, and Yueqin Huang from China will offer their seminal studies and privileged perspectives to open what we hope will be a lively discussion chaired by President-Elect Rachid Bennegadi from France and myself, President of the Canadian Association of Social Psychiatry. Abstract: This is the inaugural speech on the occasion of the founding of the Licentia Docendi in Honorem – the Honorary Chair – in Social Psychiatry at the Scuola Medica di Milano della Università Ambrosiana conferred upon Professor Vincenzo Di Nicola, who is given the academic title of Magister ad Honorem – Honorary Professor. The speech will address three themes: (1) the place of the person in social psychiatry linking Prof. Di Nicola’s call for a 21st century social psychiatry manifesto (Di Nicola, 2019) with the new person-centred paradigm for medicine, health, and social care at the Scuola Medica di Milano; (2) the struggle for a person-centred vision of health and social care in a time that Neil Postman (1993) characterized as technopoly, defined as “the surrender of culture to technology,” with examples from psychiatry (Di Nicola & Stoyanov, 2021), child development (Di Nicola & Daly, 2020), and family therapy (Di Nicola, 2011); and (3) the challenges of the new coronavirus pandemic, better understood as a syndemic or combination of biological and social epidemics (Horton, 2020), for both medicine and society, addressing its impacts on children and families (Di Nicola & Daly, 2020), on society (Barreto, et al., 2020; Chadda, et al., 2020), and on biopolitics (Agamben, 2020; Di Nicola, 2021). Prof. Di Nicola’s speech will conclude with a call for a synthesis of social psychiatry with person-centred medicine, balancing evidence-based medicine with values-based practice, by embracing the emerging epistemology of the Global South (Di Nicola, 2020) and an eco-social perspective.

Yesterday afternoon, in the heart of the Rome of the Popes, at the Locanda di Pietro, home of Cucina Evolution, the volume entitled Silver Universe, Views on Active Living was presented to approximately sixty persons. In spite of the difficulty of the issue, many participants decided to face the challenge to think about aging, exploring the importance of nutrition and other relevant aspects, such as prevention. I spoke about primary and secondary prevention in the pre-onset of Alzheimer's disease. Roberto Giua shared about the genesis of the edited volume with a history of the difficulties faced while encouraging prevention in Italy, compared with the predisposition in the US (thanks to AIM, Alzheimer Impact Movement), with an important emphasis on following protocols indicated by Prof. Maffei in the "Train The Brain" project. Chiara Manzi has presented her balanced and extraordinary recipes, taking into account anti-aging properties as well as the pleasure of eating relevant for well-being. Finally, Roberto Cipolla, the Chef, has elaborated on how he was able to incorporate scientific findings into his profession. Some background discussion centered on the themes of Trauma, Stigma and Caregivers treated in the book by Laura Dryjanska and Marzia Giua.

So we must join forces and work together to reduce and/or end homelessness. Many argue that holistic strategy (i.e. holistic approach to business) sounds abstract - but the chronic silo mentality in organizations reduces efficiency and contributes to more failure than success in the long run. Moreover, I believe that business must encompass the human experience since it is run by humans for humans. As Plato puts it: “The Part Can Never Be Well Unless the Whole is Well."

Art Therapy in Neurocognitive Disorders: Why the Arts Matter in Brain Health by Angel C Duncan* in Crimson Publishers: Annals of Medicine and Surgery Art has been in existence since mankind. From cave paintings to modern day society, art has been used as to tell a story, document history and provide a voice when words have become lost. We would not have the knowledge of our past had it not been for art. Medically and psychologically, art is often used for self-expression, to find an inner release and explore the process of creativity through physical and emotional pain and healing. For persons with neurocognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), where memory, judgement, and reasoning are disrupted, art has been able to unlock memories thought to be lost, improve behaviors i.e. agitation, depression, and give insight into what the person may be feeling or thinking. Take for example famed artist, Willem de Kooning, some art experts may argue his brilliance as an artist was not fully recognized until his paintings became more rudimentary and abstract. Go to: Abstract Introduction: Insulin-dependent patients are individuals with chronic disease who are well adapted to living and dealing with any health needs and fears arising. An important aspect in the process of adaptation to chronic illness is the provision of nursing care in the early stages of the disease, because this contributes to its acceptance and the early identification and management of potential complications. Purpose: To investigate the health needs and self-management problems faced by patients with diabetes daily, especially those who use insulin. Furthermore, purpose of this study was to investigate the fears experienced by patients in the early stage of the disease, but also in its subsequent development and to study possible differences between sexes. Methodology: This is a qualitative study, using interpretative phenomenological approach. Fifteen (nine women and six men) insulin-dependent patients, recounted their personal fears and their needs, through semi-structured interviews, which took place in Central Greece. The method used for processing the results is the Mayering one. Results: The analysis of the narratives showed that patients have a variety of fears and needs associated with the diagnosis, treatment, expected consequences, prognosis and everyday life in the management of the disease. Most patients express the concept of need as desire. Care needs, psychological support and education to recognize and prevent hypoglycemia. Conclusions: Insulin-dependent patients express fears and needs in their daily lives. Nurses providing care aimed at enhancing the level of health, while putting self-care information and training them. Background:Epilepsy is a medical condition with serious social ramification. People living with epilepsy experience lowered quality of live and altered self-esteem as a result of stigma attached to their condition. This stigma may be attributed to knowledge deficit and different social meaning on epilepsy among populations.This study sort to assess knowledge and social construction of epilepsy and its treatment modalities among households in Vihiga County of Kenya.Method:A survey study was carried between January-June 2016. The study sort to understand knowledge on causes and treatment modalities of epilepsy among people living in Vihiga County. A sample of 121participants was randomly selected from 121 households that were selected through stratified proportionate sampling techniques Results:Thirty five (35%) defined epilepsy by describing what happens during an epileptic fit. 30% defined epilepsy by giving signs and symptoms of the condition, 24% explained epilepsy by explaining cause of the condition while 10% explained using perception:Causes; Respondents gave varied responses on causes for epilepsy, they included, curse, breaking a taboo, heredity, acute illness such as Malaria and complications from physical injury to the brain: Treatment; 50.8% said epilepsy can be treated using anti-epileptic medicine. 11.5% said herbal medication could heal epilepsy, 6% said eating cooked dog meat could heal epilepsy, 20% said rituals and animal sacrifices could heal epilepsy while 1% said epilepsy can be resolved by killing the person who is suffering epilepsy.Conclusion:Though signs and symptoms of epilepsy are well known,there is knowledge deficit on causes and treatment of epilepsy.

This is a Project that I developed mainly for 2 reasons - To enable people affected by stroke access to exercise in a 'gym' environment. To show if being able to access exercise would improve peoples overall well being and improve their mental health. The 'outcomes' show marked improvement and the results of the Project were delivered to 'Westminster Health forum' in 2011 as an example 'community stroke improvement'.
