DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS &
RESERVOIR DISTRIBUTION
29 February – 4 March | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Your Expert Course Leader
Maarten Wiemer
Maarten has over 35 years’ experience as Exploration Geologist for Shell globally. He has field experience in Egypt,
NW Borneo, MENA, China, Madagascar, North Sea, Oman and The Netherlands. His expertise includes Seismic
Stratigraphy, Reservoir Characterisation, Prospect Maturation, Play Based Exploration and Brownfield Opportunity
Screening. He developed and delivered the current course in Malaysia, Bangalore, Singapore, Cairo and The
Netherlands.
What past learners said:
“Good balance between lectures and exercises.”
“Great case histories.”
“I liked the training technique used to introduce depositional systems and both their log and seismic signatures, combined with discussion on
modern environments and doing exercises.”
“The course is the best I have attended in understanding basin architecture using depositional environmental models, seismic and well data.
It provided me with comprehensive knowledge that we can apply in the joint Shell-Petromin study of the Gulf of Papua.”
“An excellent course and well presented. Provided a practical grasp of the sequence stratigraphic concepts and skills to understand
depositional systems and apply in hydrocarbon exploration.”

DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS & RESERVOIR DISTRIBUTION
29 February – 4 March 2016 | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
About this training course
The course aims at improving the conceptual geological understanding of the presence and quality distribution
of potential reservoir systems. The training material is derived from a variety of geological settings and
comprises a mix of petroleum geology case histories and textbook material including seismic, log, core and
outcrop data.
By attending this training, you will be able to acquire the following:
 Sound depositional geology concepts underpinning the evaluation of reservoir geometry and quality
distribution.
 Increased evaluation skills when assessing gross reservoir and reservoir quality distribution, based on
the analysis of seismic, log, core and outcrop.
 Awareness of the interplay between structural deformation and depositional architecture in clastic
reservoir settings.
What this course will cover:
 Resolution, dimensionality and integration of different types of geological data.
 Understand stratigraphic surfaces and hierarchy.
 Depositional sequences and systems tracts.
 Stratigraphic diagrams.
 Deltaic depositional systems and reservoirs.
 Deep Water depositional systems and reservoirs.
 Alluvial depositional systems and reservoirs.
 PoroPerm systems.
 Carbonate depositional systems and reservoirs.
 Regional seismic line seismo-stratigraphic interpretation.
 Stratigraphic traps.
 Case histories – China, Madagascar, Egypt, NW Borneo, Niger Delta and the North Sea.
Specific topics to be discussed:
Integration of different types of geological data, seismic and sequence stratigraphic concepts, depositional
sequences and systems tracts, parasequences, porosity and permeability trends and their relation to facies and
diagenesis, examples and case histories (a/o North Sea, Niger Delta, Madagascar, Egypt, NW Borneo, China)
including deltaic, deep water and alluvial depositional settings. Basic carbonate reservoir module. Seismic
stratigraphic regional line interpretation, construction of a Wheeler diagram.
Learning Methods:
A structured course based on presentations, individual and team exercises and discussions. Input from
delegates via team discussions of team exercises are an important learning element.
Who should attend?

DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS & RESERVOIR DISTRIBUTION

  • 1. www.petroEDGEasia.net DEPOSITIONAL SYSTEMS & RESERVOIR DISTRIBUTION 29 February – 4 March | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Your Expert Course Leader Maarten Wiemer Maarten has over 35 years’ experience as Exploration Geologist for Shell globally. He has field experience in Egypt, NW Borneo, MENA, China, Madagascar, North Sea, Oman and The Netherlands. His expertise includes Seismic Stratigraphy, Reservoir Characterisation, Prospect Maturation, Play Based Exploration and Brownfield Opportunity Screening. He developed and delivered the current course in Malaysia, Bangalore, Singapore, Cairo and The Netherlands. What past learners said: “Good balance between lectures and exercises.” “Great case histories.” “I liked the training technique used to introduce depositional systems and both their log and seismic signatures, combined with discussion on modern environments and doing exercises.” “The course is the best I have attended in understanding basin architecture using depositional environmental models, seismic and well data. It provided me with comprehensive knowledge that we can apply in the joint Shell-Petromin study of the Gulf of Papua.” “An excellent course and well presented. Provided a practical grasp of the sequence stratigraphic concepts and skills to understand depositional systems and apply in hydrocarbon exploration.”

The training material is derived from a variety of geological settings and comprises a mix of petroleum geology case histories and textbook material including seismic, log, core and outcrop data. By attending this training, you will be able to acquire the following:  Sound depositional geology concepts underpinning the evaluation of reservoir geometry and quality distribution.  Increased evaluation skills when assessing gross reservoir and reservoir quality distribution, based on the analysis of seismic, log, core and outcrop.  Awareness of the interplay between structural deformation and depositional architecture in clastic reservoir settings. What this course will cover:  Resolution, dimensionality and integration of different types of geological data.  Understand stratigraphic surfaces and hierarchy.  Depositional sequences and systems tracts.  Stratigraphic diagrams.  Deltaic depositional systems and reservoirs.  Deep Water depositional systems and reservoirs.  Alluvial depositional systems and reservoirs.  PoroPerm systems.  Carbonate depositional systems and reservoirs.  Regional seismic line seismo-stratigraphic interpretation.  Stratigraphic traps.  Case histories – China, Madagascar, Egypt, NW Borneo, Niger Delta and the North Sea. Specific topics to be discussed: Integration of different types of geological data, seismic and sequence stratigraphic concepts, depositional sequences and systems tracts, parasequences, porosity and permeability trends and their relation to facies and diagenesis, examples and case histories (a/o North Sea, Niger Delta, Madagascar, Egypt, NW Borneo, China) including deltaic, deep water and alluvial depositional settings. Basic carbonate reservoir module. Seismic stratigraphic regional line interpretation, construction of a Wheeler diagram. Learning Methods: A structured course based on presentations, individual and team exercises and discussions. Input from delegates via team discussions of team exercises are an important learning element. Who should attend? Exploration and Development Geoscientists
